So child welfare programs began when child labor was made illegal? Even if that is so, big business didn't give up employing children just like that, people had to fight for that. And that is class struggle. I don't see how this proves anything. And claiming that Obama is a Marxist is simply ridiculous. He wants to save capitalism, not destroy it
.@SomeoneCrazy2 I think you will soon learn that the real world is actually more complex than your simplified class conflict model. If you read the history of the Progressive Era, you will find that the poor were actually the ones in favor of child labor. Business leaders and American elites saw child labor as something that was holding us back as a military and financial power.
@johndrew25 Of course the poor were in favor of child labor, since they had no other way to survive. The problem is that you are using a strawman argument: You are saying people claim that progressive reforms were won directly through the struggle of the working class. However, it is a lot more complex than that, and progressive reforms were largely a weapon of the bourgeoisie to counter the revolutionary tendencies in the working class. They were won indirectly, not directly.
@SomeoneCrazy2 Please. You make it sound so easy. I won an award from the American Political Science Association in 1989 because I was the first political scientist in the country to articulate the connection between child labor law enforcement and child welfare programs. :-)
I am not sure he is a Marxist, but he is definitely a socialist. Thank you for sharing, I have heard that many of his autobiographical elements, differ from impressions people had of him . I was actually up until a few years ago a Marxist myself, I began to become interesting in economics, and everything about actual Marxist theory, suddenly made no sense. Anyway great interview.
@R3AllyG00dB33R My take? I think the Marxism label is accurate because of Obama's focus on class conflict, the idea of an inevitable revolution and his desire to redistribute the wealth. There is no evidence that he changed his beliefs since I knew him in 1980-1981 and his associations - Ayers, Rev. Wright - probably would not tolerate him if he were not sincerely devoted to their perspective.
@R3AllyG00dB33R Hi m a Brit living in England. Obama is a Marxist by virtue of being a socialist. Socialists are followers of the teaching of Marx. In my country Fabian Socialsts try to produce covert revolution by stealth with hidden demoralisation strategies. Obamas bio written by him claims he is a Marxist. His mother was a Cultural Marxist. It is a real danger to freedom in the USA but implemented in s first stage by attacking morale and increasing State governance.
@johndrew Sir I appreciate you telling the truth my friend. Yuri Bezmenov has a great video on youtube that explains how Marxism was crept into our country. I too wasn't necessarily a Marxist but was a leftist. To be honest looking back it was the same damn thing. Now? I am an American. True American. Which means I am a Milton Friedman style conservative/libertarian. I learned the errors of my views. Why didn't Barry ever pick up on this? If he was so bright?
@SuperGuitarman69 My theory is that his training as a lawyer and as a community activist didn't give him the opportunity to study up on why the Marxist socialist perspective was so incorrect. Nevertheless, his beliefs are probably elemental to him - consistent with his childhood and early adulthood. He's probably shocked that it isn't more popular and working right now.
Dr. Drew I find your crusade not only repulsive because of the glaring ideological falsehood sophism and distortions you perpetrate on your innocent audience but because your stunt amounts to screaming fire in a crowded theater. If u are really a PHD from Cornell and you call the elected leader of the USA a marxist or a communist at a time when confused and misinformed people fly airplanes in government buildings, you are a not only a disgusting human being but a true enemy of your own country!
Well, I'm definitely a genuine Cornell Ph.D. You can Google me to learn that... What's scary is that our President is a lot closer to folks like Van Jones and Bill Ayers than he has admitted in the past.
and what about "folks like that"?! You know back in RO ppl had Securitate files, containing every person they ever knew & almost everything they ever said in private or public 2 anyone and the securitate officer who interrogated them when trying to establish guilt by association, asked questions about persons they knew years before & mentioned conversations ppl couldn't even possibly remember! That's what it feels like: this ideological witch-hunt is medieval and totalitarian in its spirit!
Now to be fair to you I saw the same on the left when Bush was in office. The difference is what the left did was brought up the war profiteering past of Samuel Bush at Buckeye Steel and called GWB a war profiteer elitist and brought up Prescott Bush the director of operations at UBC, closed in 1942 for trading with the enemy and called GWB a "traitor" and even "fascist". I don't condone that for the same reason I don't condone any notion of guilt by association or gotcha politics.
I'm sharing, from personal experience, that Obama was a Marxist in 1980. (So was I at the time.) The real issue is that Obama has not explained how, if at all, he's gotten away from this dysfunctional ideology.
1st of all if you were really a marxist you would know that there many different marxists. I for one have nothing against some of the instructors at the ELTE philosophy dept in Budapest: they meant nor caused any harm to anyone ever.
But we both know what you are doing here. If you really had a genuine concern about Obama and his policy direction you would list specific policies that you disagree with and point out their perils in a specific quantifiable manner. Instead you chose ad hominem.
I'm confident that others can handle that chore. My primary goal is to simply communicate what I saw, face-to-face, regarding the young Obama's commitment to Marxist-Leninist ideology. I think it is a good explanation for why he is sticking with losing policies like health care reform and cap and trade.
1st of all I see no attempt on your part to establish anything verifiable, like a quote that a 3rd party can verify, or say something specific like tie his auto bailouts to something else a marxist would do but well known capitalist leaders in history or in other countries wouldn't. Instead I see a lot of arguments from intentionality.
You leave your audience in a clear confusion using equivocation about what constitutes marxism here in the USA vs what was marxism leninism in China or Europe.
Actually, if you listen to this interview carefully, then you'll see that I am sensitive to different "brands" of Marxist philosophy. I've always said that the argument that evening was the contrast between Obama's revolutionary Marxist view and my more pessimistic view on the possibilities of a genuine revolution.
Is he about to start exterminating rich people or confiscate private property?! Frankly I don't know listening at your expose. As a consequence of that your "testimony" sounds to the uninitiated something like: "Matt Rothschild is clearly anti semitic because he's a progressive and we all know H. Ford was that too". You give a false impression of not just Obama but of marxists in this country. Why are they dangerous?! We just don't know, but sure they seem like public enemy #1.
remember: he is already in power. he doesn't need a revolution. If I didn't know any better, I would be very scared as an american citizen. You are aware of teh history of red scare in this country so you are perfectly aware of how your unqualified categorization is received in this country.
@madashelldude All Marxism is evil. PERIOD> Doesn't matter what "brand" you name of it. Our country is great because of freedom and liberty. The "pursuit" of happiness. There is no room in America for any version or conversation of Marxism. Much less having a Marxist as president as we (dangerously) have now. We Conservatives have now been awakened like we never have been before. We will root them out from under the dung they reside and expose them. You do better hanging out at colleges.
LOL! it's so amusing when conservatives try to redefine language. I grew up in communist Romania and read Marx in high school. There is nothing marxist about Obama or his policies or views. In fact Obama is so far to the right that all conservative parties in the civilized west would consider him too right wing for comfort. Only in the US right wing's alternate reality is healthcare for all citizens considered "marxism" and not recognized instantly as a matter of common human decency.
LOL! I probably know more about the Constitution than you. At least I read it. I know for example that the establishment clause in the 1st amendment goes back to my home land, an old Unitarian edict (the 1568 Edict of Turda). I find it amazing that people who don't read or know too much about anything have such strong opinions about everything ;))) Perhaps you should move to North Korea just 2 learn the true meaning of the word "communist", u spoiled little brat.
Spoiled little brat?! HA! I find it interesting that people like YOU think you are so smart to try and talk to me like you actually know me. Spouting your left & right bullshit. And what does the freedom of religion have to do with mandated health care? You talk to drew about private property? Do you have a land patent? Do you pay unlawful taxes? Obamas crew already disobeys the constitution and they want to move America into a totalitarian state. And when did I ever say "communist" huh?! HHMMM?
Y'all are such idiots. Obama's gonna stomp your Wall Street guy this year.
