Yesterday I visited this opera with Mikhail Kazakov as Boris. That was absolutely stunning. His tone is brilliant and he created the fuill chaharacter of Russian Tsar. Every frase of him was a masterpiece and at the end the public gave him a standing ovation. He is a real artist and master of stage presence.
This is absurd. The man is neither a baritone nor a bass. He sings the high E's and F's open in the chest like a lyric baritone and he has no clue about acting.
funny singer, I know he is famous but I find him funny - his technique - quite a baritone way of approaching hights...:)have seen much better Godunovs
Mussorgsky started at least four operas , five if you count Salambo, and never finished one. Rimsky-Korsakov bailed him out on Boris Godunov and Khavantchina. His original Boris is really uninteresting. I gave away a CD I had of this.
Uninteresting!?! Perhaps you need to listen to it again. Mussorgsky's orig. ending makes far more sense than the one Rimsky-Korsakov hacked together!
i'm sorry that you can not anderstend and hiar that the original vertion is so mach interesting, original and new, than the vertion of korsakov.. take everything, and i don't talk even about the pilish act- when korsakov deleeted the most interesting dramatic part of the tenor and the duets...
Mussorgsky purposely went out of his to avoid western ways of formating this opera. Phrasing is much slower in the original. The opera is both historical in 2 ways,,,1. it is about the king and his times,,,,2. He synthesized music from within his culture. R-K was best at tone poem suites, he really lack more fuller body in the 3 symphonies
1) Mussorgsky finished Boris Godunov. RK took it upon himself to alter it (and probably saved it from obscurity, yes), but it was finished at the time.
2) That you find the original orchestrations uninteresting is to your detriment, no one elses. The opera world has overwhelmingly reverted to the original version, which is about the clearest verdict possible as to its quality.
Abolutely amazing! It's hard to believe it's taken so long for Mussorgsky's original score to make it to the Bolshoi. But Kazakov's beautiful voice certainly makes up for lost time!
It's depressing when I see videos with comments from exactly 3 years ago.

Blah, blah, better for your opinion to stay in the "camerata"! This is Boris Godunov not a lieder!

Mussorgsky finished Boris Godunov, what do you say about? By the way, Kazakov is good, but I think Nesterenko is (was)better...
