They use pheromones to communicate who,where,when,what, and why; there antennae are the primary receptors for interpreting pheromones. Pheromones let other ants know what task they are doing as a group, i.e. retrieving food, nest maintenance, defense, attack, etc. Artificial light has no effect on the ants ability to communicate.
