hey dude this is the problem that i got, i have VIsta as the FIrst primary DIsk, and xp as the secondary disk so i think thats why my dual boot menu is not showing, how do i make VIsta de secondary DIsk without reinstalling everything in order...?
cant i just install xp onto a partition on 1 harddrive i am allreaady running vista but i want to install xp onto a hardive partition but im not sure how
you didnt need to remove any harddrives?? you make it sound so complicated. just install xp as normal first. as ya doin it partition the harddrive half n half install xp on c:\ partition, once it boots format the second partition then once its done reboot with vista dvd as normal then install vista as normal but install it on the d:\ partition when prompt(format d:\ again just to clean things) once its installed it will reboot n thats where you get the option xp/vista simple
@ComDev2 hey a-hole if you don't like it go make your own video. Even if this tutorial was completely useless, and it's not, it helps someone somewhere which is a lot more than I can say for you.
i dont know if this question has been answered, but i have vista, i took out my old hard drive with xp (not a sata drive) i re installed xp on old drive, but system cannot boot to vista unless i unplug the old hard drive. how would i fix this problem and be able to have the choice in which system to boot to? (please try to dumb down your answer for me:P)
like all the videos on youtube, none of them say how to REALLY do it. How do you make a partition, you should have explained that, it would have been very helpful....
hi erm is it possible to dual boot vista and xp with vista installed first on the e drive? Because in all the tutorials i have seen vista is installed on c drive and vista on e drive
well i dont think that you can use an external HD unless your laptop can boot up from it (check BIOS) if not then just make a partition on your original HDD. no need to buy a new one though it is much easier. if it makes sense Message back, FYI i am a 14 yr old lol. But my dad is a veteran when it comes to computer anything.
You don't need to install vista first people. It's just that vista comes with the partitioning program he's using. Many free programs that can be used to partition if you have xp. THERE'S NO REASON WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE TO UNINSTALL XP, INSTALL VISTA, THEN CREATE A DUALBOOT! PM ME FOR INFORMATION!
if you have a pc with vista preinstalled and your wanting to dual boot to 2 hard drives how can you do it?, i dont have the vista cd, so can i still install XP on the second hard drive?
You could install xp on the second drive but you would have to switch the primary hard drive in bios each time you would want to switch Operating Systems.
i hav a total amount of 70GB free space, but it only allows me to shrink 2MB! any idea or solution on how to shrink more than that? coz its completely rediculous if you have 70GB of free space, but then it only allows you to shrink 2MB!
When i run my win xp from the bios and it starts load all the install stuff. It then changes to a black screen with this _ blinking.
after a few seconds, it comes up with an error screen that it tells me to run a thing in the command prompt. I've tried it and it didn't work! Can someone help me to fix this?
Ps: My PC is Dell XPS 420 With pre installed windows vista home premium. And i have a new partition for my disc!
Ive set up XP on one hard drive and Vista on the other hard drive, I plug them both into sata ports, on the motherboard, but theres no message to choose which one. whichever one i set to the 1st sata will boot without a message of the other OS. how can i get the message to choose what hard drive to boot off?
you should actually make a linux. Right now i am running xp and don't have any other os's. But i have 2 internal hard drives. I found out myself that if you have 2 internal hard drives, open your computer and there they are, it helps to know which one has xp running on it. Then take out the one with xp and then reboot with installation cd inside and you set it up like normal. Put the xp hard drive in and then if you want to run linux, go to the boot menu and select the hard drive that has linux.
I have a dual core laptop with Vista preinstalled. I made a partition, and turned restarted my laptop assuming that the cd would load first so I could install xp (I need it for several programs). Unfortunately for me my laptop ignores the drive untill after the os has loaded.
thats odd, when you first press the power button to turn your computer on, keep pressing f8. You should get the bios menu. Look around, every bios is different, and you should find an option that asks what device to boot first. Select your cd drive. From there, installing xp should be easy. (It may be easier to install xp over vista and then install vista on the other partition)
I accually found another way around my problem but thank you for the reply. Your videos are really good(tells you enough so you understand but not so much that it makes to feel dumb) keep them comming
write down the amount of space in that partition. Put in the xp install cd and when you boot off of it you have the option to select the drive or partition you want to install xp to. (pick the drive that has the same amount of space as the partition you want to install to)
I have windows vista and partition my hdd and installed xp on the other partition. Now when i start my computer it starts with windows xp . How do i switch back to my vista partition? any help pls
it's easier if you install vista second. What you could do, is when you computer starts keep pressing f8. You will encounter a boot menu and you can set the other hard drive to start up first.
You could. It would be more efficient to simply have one version of xp and store your different stuff in different folders. Xp might not auto set up the dual boot though.
2. Remove that hard drive, put in a new hard drive and install Vista
3. Set either as primary and you should get a dual boot menu.
Here's my question. How does the system detect there are two OS installed? Do you mind posting the boot.ini files for both OS? I'm just curious about what they look like.
And, would this work for linux, dual booting from two hard drives? That would be a nice tutorial. Dual booting linux and Windows from 2 hard drives.
Keep both hard drives in. I think I may have said differently in the video but keep both in. Make sure you install a different os on each hard drive and install vista second. Vista will automatically set up a boot manager if you do it this way. Same goes with linux. If linux is installed last it will auto set up. I recommend doing it this way so you don't have to edit files like boot.ini and such.
Some sites say like how you say in your video and some websites say to keep it in. Now I'm confused. I did it like you said in your videos, but with linux and windows, linux worked but windows wouldnt start.
try it like this- keep both hard drives in. Install windows on one hard drive and then install linux on the other. (or install on different partitions)
From what I know you would have to manually create or find a boot manager. That would be annoying to set up and I don't know enough about it to help you out in that regard. You could try to shrink the volume and install xp. Tell me what the result is if you try that.
i shrinked the volume and formatted the partition. i then restarted with the xp cd in but found no secod partition, only one. so i didn't know what was going wrong so i just installed it on my hard drive and it deleted my recovery hard drive lol so i have to buy a recovery cd and try again coz vista is just shite
You need two partitons. When you shrink the volume you have free space. Format that free space. Thats odd that you wrote over your recovery hard drive when you had the vita os as well. You should have been able to choose one or the other. Vista does have it's flaws :(
it does during the installation process it asks you to install on partitioned or un-partitioned HDD space, all you do is install on a different partitioned from you current OS and your done.
Right click it, if there is an expand option then you can expand it. (you need some unallocated space to do this). One key thing is everyone should try to partition a hard drive as a secondary hard drive meaning partition the hd your computer is not running off of. It makes it a lot easier.
i already know how to set up dual-boot even before I knew how too. I use xp more because it goes faster that vista. I had no problems with xp. No errors which is totally wierd. because it usually errors alot.
