I am Spanish and I have to say France was always much stronger than Spain, had a lot more people and more economic recuros. At the end of the seventeenth century Spain was totally exhausted, hence entering the Spanish throne, the French Bourbon France and suddenly went from being an enemy to ally against the English pirates.

You're pretty much the victor if you play Spain. Not including gunpowder, you pretty much have the best anti-armor capabilities. Your xbow-men, javilineers, and javilineer cavalry is more than enough to defeat French knights.

The english and spaniards in a 1 on 1 fight aren't a match for the French.

During the Napoleonic Era France conquered Spain.. ..and during the war of Spanish Succession the Spanish throne, after the death of the Spanish King who had no heir, was given to the King of France...

I would use the pikes to make 1 large wall of spears but not thin.Use spear wall ability. Then have the archers go up fire then retreat when french close in. Have the pikes take the main hit. Use 1 unit of bucklers as a helper to the pike and the rest flank and surround the enemy it's a lot easier that way.
