I LOVE this album. I've never really listened to the Talking heads or any other electro-pop bands so the whole sound was new to me. Also, listening to "Dance yrself clean" on my sony headphones is like walking through different dimensions.
The only thing better than listening to the these guys (or guy) album is seeing them live. A great and cool trilogy of albums. I like how the song You Wanted A Hit really gives the middle finger and says fuck the singles, here's an album.
Review Cleric - Regressions! Just give it a chance! I bet you'll enjoy it! Just listen to the album in it's entirety once!! You [probably] won't regret it!! (And yes, I'm personally visiting each of your videos!! THIS IS IMPORTANT, DAMNIT!!)
did anyone else find it weird in "Dance Yrself Clean" (which is my favourite track) that the slower bit at the start was a lot quiet than the rest of the song.
Dance Yrself Clean, Drunk Girls, All I Want, I Can Change, Pow Pow... This album is just incredible. And you're the one who made me listen to it, Anthony. Thank you.
cant understand peoples love affair with lcd soundsystem, they are a terrible live band and has anyone noticed through his hipster aurora that ,james murphy cant sing to save his life and having nancy whangs horrendous overpowering so called back up singing added to it makes me ill. this album like the rest of them is overhyped , noisy and reworked from older songs (''i can change'' sounds a lot like ''love is a stranger'' by the eurythmics) but still he manages to give it a 9! how?
Hmm I understand where you're coming from...when I first heard it I was annoyed by how long the tracks were, I felt like it was when Tarantino makes a film, theres no one there to say stop y'know? But now I totally get it, the tracks are just pure dance tracks. Sometimes LCD can really like Talking Heads too much tho....
Really Good Review Man xD I thought this album wouldnt be that good but ive listened to it over and over and i cant get enough of it, sad to hear that they are not making any more albums though but what a good way to go, My favourite track has to be the first track on the LP, I love the way it builds up and then you get the dance beat to it. Overall: AWESOME LP xD
You do a pretty good job with your reviews, but the video effects are annoying. You don't need them. Just let your opinions do the work. Album cover over the shoulder is fine, but its all the other stuff. Also, I wonder if there's a way to actually get the music in the video. Maybe lightly play one 20-sec clip under part of your review. I don't know. That's a tough one.
I'm a big fan of post-punk music. Not so much the disco'ish Talking Heads way you mean it, though. But with that said, LCD Soundsystem does really hit the spot for me. I dont find the synths cheezy at all, infact. They are exactly how I loved them in my other post-punk and new wave albums and wouldnt want them any other way.
The basslines are awesome aswell, especially in All I Want and Drunk Girls.
i wasn't as floored about this album as you were lol. i think it's really well done, but DEFINITELY not my favorite of the year. probably not even in my top 10. but nonetheless i really enjoyed it and liked the long winded songs that build and shift and just go all over the place.
electronic music has never been my cup of tea generally. however i did love four tet's album this year..more so than this actually.
You should review the John Legend/Roots album, it's got such a classic sound. Maybe even The Monitor by Titus Andronicous, great album, all over top 10s.
Home is my favorite, and I definitely agree with you, the songs don't feel as long as they actually are especially with all the developing within them.
My step-grandpa was in a band with Dio WAY back in the day :)
Dio greatest is most definatly holy diver... Last in Line was also up there but after that one Dio's material just degraded to standered 80s 90s rock nothing special.
Personally, this is my favourite album of the year and by far LCD Soundsystem's best album. It pickes up where 'Sound of Silver' fet off and really cements LCD Soundsystem as one of the define bands of this generation. With this album I feel I can hear a progression in their music, Favourite track; 'Home', least favourite track; 'Somebody's Calling Me', Favourite Moment; (rather elongated but,) tracks 'I Can Change', 'You Wanted A Hit' and 'Pow Pow', I just love these 3 tracks.
James Murphy is LCD Soundsystem, LCD Soundsystem is James Murphy. I've met the master undisguised and everything about him reflects on his music, and the translation from life to music, music to life is beautiful. I don't like the word he used to describe this album "fun", it's a beyond fun it's a beautiful dance floor masterpiece.
All right man. Its 2:07 in the morning and I just watched your review on Plastic Beach. I consider myself a man of good musical taste. Every movement has a feel, and when I explore the surface, and eventually the depths, of a genre I like to think I can pick out some of the prominent and in a sense logical artist. Plastic Beach, to me, is a rare and perfect album. I've only thought that towards less than ten albums today.. They got a 7, LCD Soundsytem got a 9. I'm giving this band a chance.
great review man,i love the way you emphasize the winning sides of this album....this is happening hits home for me too since i really enjoyed their two previous projects(someone great is a masterpiece)and i go crazy for this genre...i do too think that all i want is similar to bowie's heroes but it has its own personality and originality...keep it up brò.
Another fantastic review, Anthony. I love this record. I agree with your bit about Somebody's Calling Me. It has definitely grown on me since, though my favourite song is All I Want. Having said that, every track is wonderful, and I was especially taken by the echoing of Dance Yrself Clean's "aaa" in Home. And about your liking for post-punk w/ disco influence: I have loved good old fashioned post-punk for a while, but starting to delve deeper into the disco side. What would you recommend most?
the only song thats even remotly good on this album is pow pow pow the rest blows!and as you also pointed out needledrop im into post-punk with slightly more dance to it.
personally i think murphy would be the first to admit that he takes huge influences from previous artists and tracks to the point that you might think its taking the piss..but does that mean it isnt enjoyable to listen to??
"You Wanted A Hit"... yanked my chain big time!!!!
I hated everything about this album. Found it to be a complete bore, often obnoxious and downright lame. Didn't hear anything remotely catchy about it.
"Drunk Girls," for example, sounds like Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat" (the opener, not the album itself) yet drowned in club-hopping lousiness. He should have called it "Drunk Girls/Drunk Boys." Still haven't heard more than two good tracks from LCD Soundsystem across two albums I've listened to. Neither are from this album.
@f1diva probably, i pretty sure bowie, for the "berlin trilogy" took alot of influence from krautrock acts such as NEU! and Kraftwerk, so its probably related no?? heroes sounding soo much like NEU! and all i want soundin soo much like heroes, makes all i want sound like NEU! lol its pretty messed up
All I Want brought me to tears about 3 weeks ago. my brother and i got into a big fucking fight. he got married and didn't tell me. All I Want might not necessarily personify our situation, but some of the lyrics really hit home. damn.
Don't you think it's a little curious that, within four tracks here, you have two of the year's standouts ('Dance Yrself Clean', 'All I Want') side by side with the soul-sapping stain on humanity that is 'Drunk Girls', which would surely walk in a Golden Rasberry for music if such a thing existed.
Well my favorites are Pow Pow, Dance Yrself Clean and I can change. I frigging love this album so I'm gonna check out more of LCD's stuff. Any suggestions ppl?
So far, this is my favorite album of the year. "I Can Change" is my personal favorite track, and "Somebody's Calling Me" is my least favorite. A lot of the instrumental parts reminded me of More Songs About Buildings and Food/Fear of Music-era Talking Heads. Quite fantastic.
I found your reviews by accident and I'm glad I did. The best quality is your expansive descriptors used to describe the different musical traits even a non musically inclined person can understand with an emphasis on emotive gestures. Keep it up.
just saw them play at the Pitchfork Music Festival yesterday.. FUCKING EPIC! swear to balls my brain melted at each track they played. Gonna miss you James Murphy... well, im gonna miss the "LCD Soundsystem" James Murphy. lookin forward to whatever he does next.
@rsfaan91 Yeah, it does. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like Bowie's "Heroes." Is this a bad thing? I've always thought copying was the most sincere form of flattery, frankly.
The best of songs on this record, although more polished than previous LCD Sounsystem, are just as good as anything James Murphy has ever made. Songs like Dance Yrself Clean, All I Want, Home, You Wanted A Hit, and even Drunk girls are an extreme accomplishment even for James Murphy. That being said, I also feel the same way about the weaker tracks on the album; they are on the same level with LCD's worst work to date. Somebody's Calling Me, Pow Pow, and One Touch just seem to drag. Solid 8 IMO.
really good review man. I love the album too, except drunk girls... you said one touch reminds you of nin, I can see that, but it makes me think more of depeche mode. I dont think the song lengths are annoying at all, but I mostly listen to jam bands i.e. the disco biscuits and sts9 so I guess I'm a little used to it.. ;D
Man I am baffled by those who didn't like this album. I felt like this was an incredible work, start to finish. Long run pieces that resist the pressure to stay under the four minute mark. Each song is really well structured, great dynamics, build, and climax. Displays a great love of dance music and synth, with punk and alt rock sensibilities. I also think it's quite unique in its sound, a real accomplishment in this day and age. So you wanted a hit? We don't really do hits.
I really appreciate your reviews and opinions on these records. You have a very respectful and honest view of these albums and tracks, and I think that's what makes a good critic. But yeah, just thought I should let you know that you are doing a fantastic job and keep doing what you're doing!
Listen to this brilliant collection LOUD!!!!! Some quieter tracks add to the depth of a hard dance when your favorite song comes around..............can't wait to see them next Saturday June 5th @ the Fox Theater is Pomona...........gonna dance my ass off...........%$#^%$^&R(^&&%(^!!!!!!!!
nice review. i feel the same way about "somebody's calling me". this album is full of a lot of nods/references to other great songs, at least sonically, like "white light/white heat" and "heroes", but the nod to "nightclubbing" while not bad just doesn't blossom like many of LCD's tracks.
"I Can Change", "Pow Pow", "All I Want" and "Home" are my faves, and the sublime balance of synth chords and a punk state of mind on "You Wanted a Hit" makes me "...feel like a teenager".
Completely agree. Every track is bumpin' (Somebody's calling me might be the exception, as you pointed out.) Every other track is bonifide. You Wanted A Hit and Pow Pow are just too good. Dance yourself clean as well. Overall great album and a great review! And while he may not make anymore albums under "LCD", i hope youre right about him still making music (a la Sufjan Stevens).
Nice review Anthony. I personally love the new LCD album. Was at Friday and Saterday in NYC, great shows, James Murphy is the man... Hit the nail on the head with the Talking Heads connection, couldnt agree more.
I'm not diggin' this album at all. Other than two or three tracks the rest are easily throw aways and/or drag on with nothing really to say. Everything just seems stagnate on the album (the opposite of what you were saying, at least for me). And the synth sounds are too cheesy for my taste. Maybe with more listens it will grow on me, but I don't envision that happening. The lyrics are fun though. Keep up the great videos though Ant!
@ScifiSaints I understand man. The LP is petty long-winded, but I can't help but just enjoy the grooves on every track. Even if I'm sitting down, I can't help but move at least some part of my body when I hear this album. I've got a strong dance music bias in me, which really makes me enjoy the beats + the synths. And I WILL admit a lot of those synth sounds are cheezy, but I feel like this LP needs the cheese to keep things light and fun. Thanks for watching / commenting / being awesome. :-)
Hope you read this comment, because I strongly believe I'm not the only one who wants you to post a "top" category on your website where you share your new and old favorites. Please do.
I loved this album and the highlights for me were Dance Yrself Clean and You Wanted a Hit. In Dance Yrself Clean I thought the timing was great and those synths that come in half way through tie it all together to make a brilliant track. You Wanted a Hit shows us what a lyrical genius James Murphy is. You're too right in saying that even though these songs go for so long that it's almost impossible to get bored. By the way, you do the best reviews ever man. Keep it up.
I believe that this album is the best James Murphy has put out. My favorite song is "Dance Yrself Clean" because of the moody and cynical lyrics and the build to the perfectly placed synth explosion. It is a must listen album "Fo Sho"! (anyone get the reference?)
what artists do you refer to when you talk about the "dancier post punk" that you're into? Could you mention a few? Love all the LCD albums to death(this new one aswell!)
@gazzeh check out some other artists on lcd's label -dfa. the rapture, juan maclean are on it. 'dfa compilation' 1 + 2 are worth a shot. also check out 'optimo' by liquid liquid, predating lcd's sound by about 20 years!
awesome review.. i LOVE this album think its great .. i do like somebody is calling me though.. think its awesome... dance yrself clean probably my fav... drunk girls least favorite.. overall amazing though.. I do prefer sound of silver. but this is a close second..
@superjulian100 I personally think that "This is Happening" is just a little better than "Sound of Silver" but you look at any review site and bolth albums get the same review
great pop album with happy music. danceable likable tunes. songs to tap your foot to whilsy stroking your chin. jhe will never write another "losing my edge" but who cares...... james murphy can do whatever he wants....admittedly, it took me a few spins to like this album, now i cant get enough of it. not a perfect album but its damn good!
@CroOokedTeEth well, i can't. youtube would take the vid down, bro. :-( sorry. i always link you guys to 2 or 3 tracks inside the dbox, though. don't you check those out?
feel the same way about this album. it's the same formula as sound of silver, but except for the two stand outs, this album fits my personal taste better.
Great review!! Really like this album as well... Funny i remember not digging "Somebody's calling me" that much at first, but slowly it's becoming one of my fav. Kinda cool Iggy Popesque - The Idiot - vibe in it.
@finalmattasy ... ok, I guess I can. so I will say, this is just my opinion, but .. ooooooo JEAH!!!! You da man Mr. Fantano! LCD's new is the KAPOWPOW!!
dance-floor music these days is lacking in sentiment and real value. I think LCD Soundsystem is trying to preserve the idea that there can be some sentiment on the dance-floor. His debut was okay like a few songs on it but "Sound of Silver' is where I started liking him. and then this album came out. MAN this album is FAR better that the last two. such an awesome album, so much fun to listen to!
Like the album. Don't love it yet in the same way I love 'Sound of Silver'. Yet. Favorite tracks are the first and last one. They're coming to Dallas in June. I plan to be there.
Have you liked an album as much as this one so far this year? If so, what?
definitely interested in hearing this one, lcds early stuff along with other dfa produced things really re-ignited my interest in dance music earlier in the decade. i have to say im not really a fan of "drunk girls" but the other 1 or 2 i have heard from this so far sounds promising. definitely have to get this at some point.
Loved this whole album except Somebodys Calling Me. When that heavy synth comes in on Dance Yrself Clean i knew i would love it. Also, Home might be my favorite overall track. Excellent follow up to Sound of Silver.
honestly i think james murphy is repeating the same ideas he alredy explored in his first 2 albums...so even thought I like his sound and style I wouldn't give it more than a 6...but then on the other hand, had this been his first record I would have given it an 8,5 (which is the mark I give to the debut album) for the originality...so it's kind of difficult to judge...
Think thats spot on anthony, had it in the post today, see what you mean bout 'somebody's calling me' seemed very long winded, like your still waiting for the song to start 4 mins in, so far i'm loving 'Dance yrself clean'
I wasn't big on LCD Soundsystem's first record, but after listening to Sound of Silver I just went crazy for these guys. I was really excited about this record and let me just say this record is an amazing follow up to Sound of Silver. This for me is maybe a strong 8 or a light 9.
I can't believe this is happening. People actually like this boring fat guy singing about drunk girls (doubt he sees any girls IRL) who makes generic dance music? This album doesn't even have a few catchy songs his past albums had yet it seems it's his most critically acclaimed so far. Wth is wrong with you people? Saw a post on a blog which listed all the songs he ripped off for this album, a total of like 6 songs. Embarrassing.
murphy is obviously a big music lover and knows his stuff. if you think of it as rip offs rather than consciously crafted homages you don't seem to 'get' the lcd silversounds
its not embarrassing. its james murphy. he is a guy who is an obvious music nut and admittedly needs other peoples work to base his own work on. its not embarrassing, its honest. better to admittedly rip someone off than claim it to be completely new and origional. lcd ss are excellent both on record and live. if you dont like it then fine but calling him fat...thats just rude!
"one touch" reminded me of the background synths on "Sin" off Pretty Hate Machine. I actually liked the instrumentation on Somebody's Calling Me but the lyrics felt kinda half-ass.
i felt the same thing anthony, they might be very long but none of them ever feels that long, i also hated somebody's calling me :p, not a fan of that song
Awesome album.. My favorite track is possibly Dance Yrself Clean. But I really love the whole album. I also agree that Somebody's Calling Me is the weakest.
Not there's anything wrong with that but I always found LCD soundsystem to be too much of a celebration of flamboyance and alternative' lifestyle which just slops it all over your face and proceeds to rub it with glee abandon. Sure there's talent there, but just not the kind that should be praised without criticizing it's key sore blotches that prevent them from being a better digital punk band.
I take the beliefs of John Lydon when it comes to this album. Lydon was a strong believer in making progressive music and could care less about who liked it. PiL and Lydon's favorite Captain Beefheart are two fine examples of that. James Murphy has that belief. You can tell by that 2003 tune "I'm Losing My Edge". I thought this album was brilliant, not the greatest. Murphy ends LCD on his own terms. I saw it is a 4 out of 5 stars.
I agree with your rating, i think the album is very adventurous, and if it is their last, it's one hell of a way to bow out. i think that the track All I Want can be a real hit, perhaps not to the level of All My Friends, but it can certainly be a hit for the summer. my only slight criticism is with You Wanted A Hit, i think the music on it is great, it just perhaps could bring the vocals in earlier. other than that, this is my favorite album of he year thus far.
I love the nine inch nails reference and I totally see it too. I have been really getting into early nin the past 6 months... I realized how deeply rooted they were in dance music so it really started to appeal to me.

@rsfaan91 Yeah, it does. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like Bowie's "Heroes." Is this a bad thing? I've always thought copying was the most sincere form of flattery, frankly.

@theneedledrop hey anthony "one touch" reminds me of krautrock, would you say im wrong for drawing that comparison??? kraftwerk maybe¿?

The best of songs on this record, although more polished than previous LCD Sounsystem, are just as good as anything James Murphy has ever made. Songs like Dance Yrself Clean, All I Want, Home, You Wanted A Hit, and even Drunk girls are an extreme accomplishment even for James Murphy. That being said, I also feel the same way about the weaker tracks on the album; they are on the same level with LCD's worst work to date. Somebody's Calling Me, Pow Pow, and One Touch just seem to drag. Solid 8 IMO.

I agree somebody's calling me is the weak point of the album. I love home, you wanted a hit, all i want, dance yrself clean, and all i wan want.

really good review man. I love the album too, except drunk girls... you said one touch reminds you of nin, I can see that, but it makes me think more of depeche mode. I dont think the song lengths are annoying at all, but I mostly listen to jam bands i.e. the disco biscuits and sts9 so I guess I'm a little used to it.. ;D
seriously great review though, keep it up

Man I am baffled by those who didn't like this album. I felt like this was an incredible work, start to finish. Long run pieces that resist the pressure to stay under the four minute mark. Each song is really well structured, great dynamics, build, and climax. Displays a great love of dance music and synth, with punk and alt rock sensibilities. I also think it's quite unique in its sound, a real accomplishment in this day and age. So you wanted a hit? We don't really do hits.
Loved It!

nice review. i feel the same way about "somebody's calling me". this album is full of a lot of nods/references to other great songs, at least sonically, like "white light/white heat" and "heroes", but the nod to "nightclubbing" while not bad just doesn't blossom like many of LCD's tracks.
"I Can Change", "Pow Pow", "All I Want" and "Home" are my faves, and the sublime balance of synth chords and a punk state of mind on "You Wanted a Hit" makes me "...feel like a teenager".
fgarciaish 1 year ago
Completely agree. Every track is bumpin' (Somebody's calling me might be the exception, as you pointed out.) Every other track is bonifide. You Wanted A Hit and Pow Pow are just too good. Dance yourself clean as well. Overall great album and a great review! And while he may not make anymore albums under "LCD", i hope youre right about him still making music (a la Sufjan Stevens).

ScifiSaints 1 year ago
@ScifiSaints I understand man. The LP is petty long-winded, but I can't help but just enjoy the grooves on every track. Even if I'm sitting down, I can't help but move at least some part of my body when I hear this album. I've got a strong dance music bias in me, which really makes me enjoy the beats + the synths. And I WILL admit a lot of those synth sounds are cheezy, but I feel like this LP needs the cheese to keep things light and fun. Thanks for watching / commenting / being awesome. :-)

(anyone get the reference?)

dance-floor music these days is lacking in sentiment and real value. I think LCD Soundsystem is trying to preserve the idea that there can be some sentiment on the dance-floor. His debut was okay like a few songs on it but "Sound of Silver' is where I started liking him. and then this album came out. MAN this album is FAR better that the last two. such an awesome album, so much fun to listen to!

definitely interested in hearing this one, lcds early stuff along with other dfa produced things really re-ignited my interest in dance music earlier in the decade. i have to say im not really a fan of "drunk girls" but the other 1 or 2 i have heard from this so far sounds promising. definitely have to get this at some point.

Loved this whole album except Somebodys Calling Me. When that heavy synth comes in on Dance Yrself Clean i knew i would love it. Also, Home might be my favorite overall track. Excellent follow up to Sound of Silver.
Man, so far 2010 has had some amazing albums.
zphillis 1 year ago
honestly i think james murphy is repeating the same ideas he alredy explored in his first 2 albums...so even thought I like his sound and style I wouldn't give it more than a 6...but then on the other hand, had this been his first record I would have given it an 8,5 (which is the mark I give to the debut album) for the originality...so it's kind of difficult to judge...
cimattikaiman 1 year ago
Think thats spot on anthony, had it in the post today, see what you mean bout 'somebody's calling me' seemed very long winded, like your still waiting for the song to start 4 mins in, so far i'm loving 'Dance yrself clean'
spinswimscream25 1 year ago
I wasn't big on LCD Soundsystem's first record, but after listening to Sound of Silver I just went crazy for these guys. I was really excited about this record and let me just say this record is an amazing follow up to Sound of Silver. This for me is maybe a strong 8 or a light 9.
trupianod 1 year ago

@obligatorynagger
its not embarrassing. its james murphy. he is a guy who is an obvious music nut and admittedly needs other peoples work to base his own work on. its not embarrassing, its honest. better to admittedly rip someone off than claim it to be completely new and origional. lcd ss are excellent both on record and live. if you dont like it then fine but calling him fat...thats just rude!

Don't make music for the radio

I agree with your rating, i think the album is very adventurous, and if it is their last, it's one hell of a way to bow out. i think that the track All I Want can be a real hit, perhaps not to the level of All My Friends, but it can certainly be a hit for the summer. my only slight criticism is with You Wanted A Hit, i think the music on it is great, it just perhaps could bring the vocals in earlier. other than that, this is my favorite album of he year thus far.
I would agree with 9/10
