Observations of the obvious: 1. You have a single speed wheel 2. You use a lot of water, similar to Robin Hopper 3. You don't use any ribs, only your hands
Hi,simply homemade bats made of a vinyl/resin material.
On the wheelhead are 2 metal pegs,1 in the edge and 1 in the middle.
Then drill 2 holes in the bat to correspond to the pegs and you just sit the bat on the pegs and the suction of the water on the wheelhead keeps it from lifting up.
hi dan, i think it would really be helpful if you posted a video of how to pull. i have watched others but none are as quick and nice as yours so if you could explain that would help so much! take care
Would you mind telling me if the pegs are an integral part of the wheel head or have you adapted a standard wheel head to secure the bats? If so, how did you secure the pegs to the wheel?..........
Are these really annoying questions? Sorry, I'm sick of getting splinters.
I am really interested in buying a set of goblets and a carafe (there is a white set in one of your photo's), should I contact /order through the pottery email address?
Thanks for the message btw. Was just wondering what that red bat is made from and how you stick it to the wheel head? All the bats at collage are ply and warped (and need to be binned!). this looks like an economical alternative for them.
do you high fire some of your stuff?

Is your nick name "the machine" because you're whipping bowls out like one. Holy cow....almost everything I do on the wheel is an accident.

okay the move where you make the cylinder shape shrink into a bowl shape is got damned impossible

Dan, what is the weight of this ball of clay in grams/ounces? I am guessing 3/4 - 1 lb. Thanks!

That was pretty amazing. What kind of wheel do you use? Thanks for sharing these videos. You are more helpful than my pottery teacher!

@scott1235ut actually he has different wheel speeds
mdgrmt 2 years ago
@scott1235ut 100% agree with your comment. As beginner, wonder how can the single speed work to pull the clay up... In need to slow down the speed.

Dan, is the ring you leave below the lip for decoration or to strengthen an area that would be weak if fully drawn up?
Thanks.
0emk1 2 years ago
It's purely for a decorative effect.
Although a thicker band will help with stability of the pot if you're messing about with it like this.
Cheers,Dan

Hi Dan, I am very interested in the bat system you use. Could you tell me more about it? And I love your soup bowls!
Thank you Karen in CT

You can get wheelheads with prefitted metal pegs or predrilled holes into which you can screw your own metal pegs.
Otherwise you can drill your own holes and screw 2 metal pegs in yourself then drill 2 holes in the bats at the corresponding positions.
You'd better contact a potters supply company to get the right ones though.
As for the Carafe and goblets we don't do mail order sorry as it costs too much to post and always seems to get broken on the way.
Cheers.

It's the Brit here again : )

These bats are made of vinyl or perspex type stuff.
They have 2 holes drilled into them which match the 2 small pegs which are stuck out of the wheel head so they just fit over the pegs.
One in the middle and one on the edge.
We used to have wooden ones in the past but got sick of getting splinters.
