I don't think it matters how he was injured, does someone have to be in the Marines, or wounded in action to get medical care??

The only people who it would effect if he wasn't truthfull about how he got his injury is his closes family and friends, and thats not the whole worlds business.. he will have to work that out with them. The only thing that mattered is that he received legal medicine for a painful injury, and the police took it away.
