gator lizards eat things that live in their area: jerusalem and mountain crickets, a variety of spiders especially cob (cellar) spiders, darkling beetles, moths, millipedes, and an occasional scorpion, solpugid, ant, field mouse, or centipede. some of these things will also eat the lizard if it's small. i've seen jays and hawks eat alligator lizards here. also some lay eggs while others give live birth. dogs, cats, flippers, and roads are their worst enemies

I hate hypocrites with a passion. They complain about a lizard eating a rat and claim that it deserves to live, but they don't reciprocate or bat and eyelid for an insect that gets eaten, or worse, become glad, just because its gross and ugly looking and you hate roaches. A roach has every right to live just like a rat or a rabbit. Your ideals are because its not nice, cute and fluffy at all, it doesn't qualify in the same category to live.

hey i want to help these two wild alligator lizards that i see often,theyre not hurt but they look extremley super hungry because they r skinny.theyre always hiding under a trash can and in my case r very easy to catch.so my question is what can i keep one in and its basic care needs?like dies it need uvb,tank size etc.oh theyre about 8 inches long.

i'm not familyer with alligator lizards but the genneral rule with lizards is that its food shouldent be bigger than the lenghts of its head.

mostly true for geckons, camaleons, and other lizards but you gotta see those ones tear apart their prey, alligator lizards are hardcore :-)

Okay thats cool. I'm more familyer with blue tongue skinks, crested geckos, and beardies.

they're not generally known to be the most docile lizards, and are not suited to novice herp keepers. A blue tongued skink may be more suitable for newbies, if you are one :)

Hey James, don't feed your lizard roaches. I used to feed mine roaches too, and later found out that roaches absorb pesticides. They are immune to them, but your lizard will get sick or die if he eats enough of them. Alligator Lizards are the coolest.

Don't worry, cerebulon, I bread my tropical roaches just for the purpose of feeding them to animals like bird, reptiles, frogs, tarantulas and scorpions. Perfectly safe that even humand coul eat them.

Is like lab mice, perfectly healty and desease free.

Thanks for your concer, by the way, wild roaches area healt hazard and nobody should handle them.

@jedihunter176 Yeah. I was a dumb kid at the time and didn't know about the roaches. My lizard got pretty sick but survived. He lived to a ripe old age of 26. Afterward I only fed him crickets and mealworms.

@jedihunter176 Southern Alligator Lizard, same as yours. He was 18 when I got him from the previous owner and was just under 2 ft. He would have been longer, except he'd lost his tail to a cat when he was young. He re-grew it, but it never looked right and it was stunted. He stayed fairly lively until that last year and then he just stopped moving, stopped eating and died. Best non-dog pet I've ever had.
