I just tried to do the assassination that way and was unable to get Ezio to drop down to the beam. A minor control bug, I guess. By the time I got down there, the target had left, so I did an areal assassination of two of the guards and then ran around the corner while being chased by the other two guards. I got to the top of the stairs just as the target was reaching the top on the other side and did a run and stab. It was still easier than having to chase the guy in circles.

That's the beauty of it, IMHO. In this game, Ezio is becoming the master assassin that we meet n later games. Of course he's kicking their butts. He's supposed to. The strength of the game is it's graphic beauty and the story that it tells. A high difficulty level would just get in the way.
