....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Hahahahah. I absolutely love Basie's little shoulder dance at 3:07. Hahah. The band is whaling, Butch is slamming, and Basie is just chillin'. Love it!!!!!!
I saw this band back in '75 in Japan. What an amazing band. Although the concert hall was small, only Count had a mic. All raw, real sound. The wall of sound was unreal. Not to mention Butch's grin and flying blond hair. Just stunning!!!!!!! Holy Cow!!!!!!
My God! I just listened to Whirlybird and also After You've Gone (with Butch and Buddy De Franco). There aren't any words to describe what this man could do with the drums. Magnificent, Stupendous, Brilliant - none of them do his talent justice. You just have to shake your head and be thankful you were privileged enough to hear him play. Thank you Butch! You da man!
@TheLeffan I have an LP (gives my age away) of the Basie band in Stockholm. I have nearly worn it out, especially "Cute" - the play it a little up tempo. Would you know how I could get a copy of the LP; CD or whatever?
Butch kills, love the 1st bone player's support...I'm guessin' these guys were close. It's funny how stage proximity works...Basie was the shit...NUFF SAID!!!
Hi Brian Great video! I happen to be a huge Buch Miles fan for many years. I would like to know the name and title of this concert also if this is available on DVD. Thanks.
I have always hoped that someone would post vids of Butch with this edition of the Basie band, especially playing this song. One of the greatest drum feature tunes of all time played by one of the greatest drummers of all time Butch Miles. I understand Buddy was the one that suggested the Basie hire Butch for the drum chair and i agree that his fantastic playing probably contributed to the rift between the two.
I like how Al Grey watches Butch with interest and enthusiasm and Freddie Green looks absolutely bored.

@rksouza77 How was it meeting Butch Miles? I sent him a link of one of my videos. He answered me and liked my playing. He seems like a real nice guy.

I think this is the reason Buddy distanced himself from Butch later on.
Dig this solo by Butch.
Butch and Donny Osborne were the closest things to Buddy, ever.
Here Butch really displays some Monster Chops and a very tasteful and extremely powerful solo.
It does not get much better than this ~
