This is easily one of the greatest anime to ever exist. The method of it's storytelling is done in such a great way. Treats itself maturely while still keeping a bit of an upbeat feel to it. Enjoyable and interesting cast with a villain you love to hate and a protagonist that's surprisingly really respectable. It's portrayal of the reality of war was so nicely done and the way it actually conveyed it's message was just incredible. It's got permanent spot on my top 10 and deserves to be on all.
I honestly fee confident in saying this was the best anime ever from the 90's, and yes ive seen evangelion, cowboy bebop and rurouni kenshin trust and betrayal and their all amazing(eva was good not great, second half fucks up) but they dont reach the quality of this show to me
Everyone is like 'Ehh, it's so depressing. It's such a downer.' But it's the power of the STORY! People should look past that and appreciate the reality of this. No matter how much it blows. ;_;
@SuperEvilduck yah agreed and amazing animated for its time, i swear 1996-2000 was just that sweet spot, it avoided that random gore just be gorey that pretty much 80% of animes prior to 1995 did, and avoid fanservice and genericness that 2003-05 suffered.
2006 and 7 were good years too and 2011 has been mindblowing anime wise but i dont think it reaches this time period.....ok 2011 does but still
One of my favourite animes. Melancholic, dramatic and interesting story, great characters and intense atmosphäre. I can also recommend haibane renmei, experiment lain, mushishi, kinos journey, princess sara, cowboy bebop, paranoia agent, samurai champloo, key the metal idol in series.
Thanks for the list. I'm looking for similar shows to Kino's Journey, it was such a lovely anime to watch.
Some other people mentioned La Maison en Petits Cubes (a short film) and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien as being quite lovely as well. Haven't watched the latter, but the former was amazing :)
Just a quick question, I heard that one of the directors of the anime was inspired to do this when he heard about the genocide in Rwanda. Is this true?

One of the best series EVER!!!
Such a profound message coupled with great action, superb music, FANTASTIC characters, and one of the best endings...
Now and Then, Here and There is #8 in my Top 10, and EVERYONE, even non-anime fans should see this show!!!!!
OtakuFreak08 1 year ago
@Katana991 yeah that is true. The director is Akitaro Daichi....

a surprisingly cheerful opening to such a sad show...
paradoxed258 2 years ago
@paradoxed258 I don't find it cheerful at all. I find it dark, tragic, grand and gloomy, yet powerful.
