  • I dont know why this music used to scare the shit out of me when I was little. I loved it though.

  • great

  • every saturday late afternoon shitting myself waiting for the daleks and cybermen to scare me to death

  • Right on the Doctor Rules, as played by Tom Baker! imho....

  • The doctor let 12 people in the hands...errr suction cups of the Daleks

  • I just discovered Delia Derbyshire, a forgotten pioneer...

  • one of the first electronica signiture themes for tv :)

  • hmmm. not sure which i like better this or mission impossible theme.

i just saw an amazing mashup of the MI theme with Jethro Tull's Living int he Past. EPic! ck it out.

    search Nutty EPK

    u will dig it

  • I was led here by Muse..

  • This is still not the original 70's menacing sound, btw!

  • sorry to hear about sarah r.i.p

  • What were they smoking at the Beeb back then?

  • RIP Sarah Jane Smith and the Brigadier..... :(

  • WhenI was in &th grade Dr. Who started in syndication in the U.S.A.; I used to racehome fromschool to watch it (the was an appalling dearth of Scie-Fi that was of any xonsequece...Star Trek gettng cancelled when I was 8-9? was traumatic!! "L").

JonPertwee was my first Doctor.....Oh but I was STEAMED when he morphed into TomBaker(WhoI came to adore!). The music was a big reason I liked it; no doubt lading me to be the fan I am of e-folks like Brian Eno. So great to hear it again!...

    Kat

  • Watch this while stone..or hey..even better, on LSD/shrooms :D

  • ive never seen the show but that theme music was great to listen to while reading an article about how Einstein's prediction that clocks will slow as their motion increases

  • Wow.it's bben too long since I heard that...it brings back memories of racing home fronm school to watch it...in the States it was in syndication for a brief period (but long enough to get me addicted :D) only to bought//shown by public television; where I also discoevered highbrow programming like Moty Python and I, Claudius...'snerk').

  • I love Dr. Who, awesome show

  • i won´t say why but i feel like I am time travelling to another place.

  • job traking this down done by a layddee in bbc imitating glass rubbing

  • GREATEST

  • best

  • Where can one get this tune?

  • very like the matt smith one!

  • @internettelivision well the Matt Smith one also has that David Tennants Theme still in it

  • love it

  • Sound like Sabbath's "Children of the Grave".

  • This freaked me out when I was a kid, but it is THE definitive Doctor Who theme!! The new one (Matt Smith) just doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid.

  • Now I know I'm old. I first started watching The Doctor when Jon Pertwee was the man. Of course I was only 2, but I remember nonetheless.

Funny thing, I still can't stand these newer themes, that original one always does it for me.

  • This song got me interested in electronic music...... Really like the spliced visualizations -- looks like that took some time. Nice work!

  • I remember hiding behind my nans sofa when this music came on absolutely shitting it.

  • Fantastic theme tune!

Best theme tune that Doctor Who has ever had, well, in my opinion!

  • Rock the theremin, dude. Just rock it.

  • @Rocketpunk79 ...Not the Theremin, infinitely more complex.....home made tape loops, replayed at various speeds, forwards, reversed, added tape echo and reverb, tapes recut, re-edited in a basement of the BBC. all done with tape and valve-era equipment. The sound of now, made in 1963. The Radiophonic Workshop, and this piece is by Delia Derbyshire, rest her soul.

But you are right, it rocks; imagine the impact 47 years ago if you can. The Beatles were still in Liverpool....

  • How advanced was this in 1963? It still sounds good today!

  • im addicted to all things dr.who i cant stop watching it, i cant stop thinking abut, i compare everything to dr.who, i wish i could see the magical blue box, i humm the song of dr.who. EVERYTHING i do is related to dr.who!!! I cant stop not liking it! Dr.who is my life, literally. I feel like i have a piece of dr.who some where in my life that i have to find out. It weirdto explain but since i was a young child strange things have happen.... And it started with dreammss....

  • Really nice tune. I agree with dfri729 - the mood is almost hypnotic.

I personally think that the producers should've stuck with this version for the Doc's later incarnations, including his current one.

  • I sincerely agree, the music here is extremely hypnotic and really they should not have changed it, nowadays i don't watch the show like I used to when Jon Pertwee regenerated into Tom Baker.....huh those were the days.....

  • my new favorite song

  • One of the coolest theme songs. Way ahead of its time

  • I don't care what anyone says, this is the best Doctor who music ever !!!

  • The mood is almost hypnotic!

  • still awesome ^_^

  • I feel like I'm gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    simply amazing melody.

  • Lol reminds me of my dad, idk why :P

  • That theme music is one of the Best Sounds Ever, cause not only does it sound awesome itself, it is an obvious marker of cool stuff to come. Also, it's ALWAYS STUCK IN MY HEAD. Always always always.

  • 0:45 wow 3D

  • Note to jchardy316:

I might hafta - no, *will* - dispute ya on that, m8..

Let's have a go at Rock/Paper/Scissors to see *who* shall hold that mantle..

And I *hope* ya play the game *just like the **Movellans** did!*LOL!

  • Love Docter Who! haha! I thank my dad for giving me the name of one of the characters. Its from one of the Older shows :)

  • @xByYourSidex Your dad named you K9?

  • lol no, there was a character in one of the old series of Dr.Who named Tegan.

  • :-) That's a nice name. Not as cool as K9, but nice nonetheless.

    PS: You're dad sounds cool.

  • GENTALMAN.

  • love this theme song

  • I'm number 0.5 fan. that comes before 1.

  • well as 0.5 is a fraction (1/2) then does that make you half a fan? hehe jk.

  • pysch out man

  • if any one is the number 1 who fan, then i am the second.

  • i'll think i'll be number one (;

  • this is a work of art

  • IM NUMBER ONE FAN OF DOCTOR WHO!

WHO ELSE IS A NUMBER 1 FAN PUT YOUR HANDS UP lol

  • ME! ME!!

    (my hand is up...)

  • im a better fan than you because ive got every dame episode from 1963-2009 on dvd and ive met david tennant colin baker peter davison and jon pertwee

  • umm, two points. firstly your being extremely childish, and secondly you are an idiot, if I remember correctly there are about one hundred sixty something episodes missing and therefore you cannot possibly have them on DVD.

  • I love the music that they use.

    Its really works for Dr.Who

  • the theme song is brillent

  • i've always loved that theme.

  • They should have had this original theme with the new Dr Who series with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennent playing the first 2 new doctors

  • is there anywhere i can find this audio... dont have a media catcher :(

  • You can find this piece along with the themes for Tom Baker / Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy's Doctors on the 25th Anniversary Special Doctor Who album. However, it's easier to just find some recording freeware for your computer & if using Windows, set the Volume recording properties to record Wav Mix, hit the record button of your freeware, then click play here at YouTube. Best practise is to mute the "line in" and any alert tones that could interrupt. Presto! Your own wav or mp3 :)

  • Somewhere on youtube I found an edited Howell version to match the original arrangement...can anyone send me a link to it?

  • WOAH.... Pink Floyd...

  • Kick ass theme.

  • Sublime!

  • The vid's okay, but it looks like it's just come off Windows Media Player.

  • it is probly

  • The Beeb should re-instate this as the theme music. It's one of the all time great pieces of electronica. Delia Derbyshire was a genius, years ahead of her time.

  • so its just me ok then

  • this must be playd to all smack heads

  • love it good one

  • someone should put this music to the Wormhole scene from 2001: a space odyssey

  • this is good yes

  • ok is it just me or is this the scariest song ever recorded? i started to listen to it but had to turn in off.

  • This had to be even more terrifying in the 1960s when electric music was very uncommon.

  • yes sir

  • Love the effect that starts at 0:17. It looks like the rocketlaunch at the start of the Hartnell titles.

  • Great Video and song keep them coming

  • cool!!!

  • pretty cool considering u made it yourself

  • Can't beat the original theme.

  • @0FindGlory yes...even when NuWHo first started its theme sounded quite the same to this ones to me....only more sped up...until recently when it has changed one again..but yes...somehow I always find myself coming back to listen to the slow yet upbeat rythmic tune of the original...because its just....just has cool..and the end of the middle eight part of the theme seems different than in the new series has well

  • Beautiful. Rest in peace, Tristram Cary.

  • Agreed, but this was composed by Ron Grainer and arranged by Delia Derbyshire, both of whom are also deceased. :-( RIP

  • Veru nice.

  • fantastic

  • tom baker = class

  • Quality!!

  • This is cool!

  • Whoah! My computer speakers nearly eploded at :35. High pitched or what...

  • No. Just turn your speakers down. :P

  • when my mum was little and heard this music she used to hide behind the sofa!!!

  • Yeah my Mum and Aunty hid behind the soaf aswell. Everonye in Birtian seemed to hide beind the sofa! xD Such as simple time....

  • So creepy, and so cool!

  • Doctor Who has one of the best opening themes around.

  • this is so much creepier then the new song, i love it.

  • crawl!

  • I don't know why they ever thought they could separate Ron Grainer's music from Delia Derbyshire's arrangement of it.

  • on the bbc site regarding this, even Grainer was amazed that what he'd written could be this fantastic (especially for that period). I've never seen the new show and upon hearing their themes, I won't. BBC should know better.

  • creepy as hell and i love it

  • This version remind me of being a kid and watching this show. It's hard to imagine that they did this with tape splicing and oscillators before digital. Back in those days you really had to think about recording as an studio engineer.

  • What version do I use for those?

  • this is by far the best best version of the theme... so haunting & atmospheric it still sends a chill down my spine.. nice visuals dibbles... cheers ;-)

  • "man hyper space always looks so freaky" XD

  • hi every one i'm doing a new series of doctor who called doctor habbo who if you are intrested ask me as friend

  • it was the Original tune m8

  • This version of the song can be found on a CD called: Cult Files. It is track 5.

  • That should be the actual theme tune to the programme! It's amazing!

    :D:D:D:D

  • Thats amzing music! :D

    Really good.

  • I have to admit this is ridiculously good music, it is eerily captivating (the tonality slightly resembles X-files, but that was just creepy and cheap, this is great).

  • Gotta love it! :D

  • 'cept of course this was recorded in about 1962 or so.

  • You mean the X Files sound like Dr. Who.

  • I would watch this just for the beggining theme and special effects. Pretty cool.

  • Brilliant effects ! , long live Doctor Who ! .

Cheers , Jason [ Doctor Who One ]

  • My favorite of all the versions of the Dr Who theme. The new graphics are top notch! Well done!

  • I like this a lot

    I'm a 10 baby....

thus the 10th theme and doctor is where i feel at home... but the other themes are so awesome to hear.

  • Mesmerising,officer Dibbles,

    Deliah Derbeshyre knew how

    to make a delicious tune

  • Actually, the theme was composed by Ron Grainer (who did The Prisoner theme), but it was Delia Derbyshire's idea to use electronic sounds and tonalities, plus she did the arrangement. Ron Grainer felt she should have received a co-composing credit, but she declined.

  • She Never Declined She Was Refused Due To The Sexist 1960's Atmosphere, By The Time She Was Finally Given Credit She Had Died

  • Oops! You are correct. I had read the story several years ago and got my facts mixed up.

  • I read also that the BBC wanted to keep members of the workshop anonymous. But, I'm sure alot of it was sexism. It's an amazing piece of work considering that it was done with out the aid of synthesisers and with tape splicing various sound with out a multitrack recorder, but several reel-to-reels.

  • great loved the theme tune as a kid lol terrified of the darlecs and the abominabol snow man haha

  • yeah... this is the one I remember... I love it!!!!

  • This is the version I remember when i watched it as a kid. I loved this, stilldo to this day. Don';t get me wrong, the new version is cool too, but I'll always hold this version of the theme in my heart

  • 00:38 to 00:52 had always hit a cord in me.

makes me feel good. Thanks for posting the theme.

  • Long live Doctor Who!!! Greatest science fiction show ever!!!

  • Doctor Who is awesome

  • doctor who RULES!!

  • The visuals feel like a Windows Media Player visualisation, but that's just one little moan... THIS THEME RULES!

  • That's because they are LOL

  • IF they are, how did officerdibbles get them oto this video?

  • windows movie maker...

    Or screen recording

The original visuals are in black and white

  • I should get a screen recorder...

  • Whell mr. lol ,I haven't seen them

yet on my player nr 11.

  • Me neither!

  • Idiot. Windows Media player couldn't do effects like this. The effects are from Winamp media player

  • Know what you mean,

but these are still a notch better.

  • Its Winamp that made the Visuals!

  • What's Winamp?

  • Its like windows media player but like 10000000000000000000000000000000000000 Times better =]

  • Cool...

  • I would definitely give it a download, its free, 1000's of themes and plugins!

  • Maybe...!

  • =] what you mean is defo!

  • Ponty 30 yo have got no idea. ( watch episode "Blink " from the last serious ) and then see if you have the same thoughts.

  • Wasn't that scary, inanimate statues that you never notice take on a whole new facet of scariness.

  • I have the exact jacket as he does, only mine is grey... I listened to this song on my ipod as I walked down the hallways with the coat on... Felt so cool. xD

  • Good stuff
