I wouldnt suggest it unless you dont mind killing your fuel mileage or failing emissions. In texes your car has to be made in 1985 or lower for this not to be a legal concern (unless you live in CA there alot more anal about there emissions). But ignoreing that the cost depends on your mechanic most shops that have a dyno and people with understanding of programming dip chips or moding the computer systems are going to charge you quite a bit to completely optimize and tune the computer system.
Hey how about fuel economy. By messing with your program, you also fucked with fuel economy. Let's say the car gain 40 HP and %30 lost in fuel economy. Unless you are in racing, don't fuck with it. It will hurt your ass at fuel pump.
@jujutube123 is that really true maybe but it all depends on how you use those extra horse power dont you think? if you drive like a maniac then sure id agree with you....
@jujutube123 LOL U ARE WRONG!! how is it that your going loose mpg? basically your adding a little horsies and adding a bit more mpg!! thats why YOU take it to a shop! unless you do it yourself then of course (lets say you have know idea what your doing) you will mess up everything... trust me! for my experience... well honestly if you drive it smooth your okay! and if you drive like a maniac, well goodbye mpg... and thats were you get confused on loosing mpg :) on a daily driving basis
theres nothing wrong if anyone would want to do this but its not good at all. I can see you can only do this to vehicles that out of warranty because if you do it while its within warranty you no have it because they will decline. ANother thing many shops would not even work on these vehicles because they have no specification for what are the parameters. How can you fix a car that you have change the way it was designed. I guess if you like by all means do it but i just dont see it why
@vitali1985 In reprogramming the ECU, it is possible to mess with functions that affect things like exhaust and such - so, it is possible to make a perfectly fine car not street legal, which could make it fail inspection, etc.
As is, just getting some more power out of your car via this method is totally legal.
im trying to find someone in south carolina that can re program my ecu in my 03 eclipse gts. i want to do more to the engine but the engine still has all the factory restrictions on it. so pretty much i floor it and it wont go past 4k to 5k rpm where it is supposed to top out at 6.2k rpm. the top speed is 150 mph but the speed you are actually able to hit is 147. mine tops out at 120 due to the engine restrictions. if anyone here can help me please =( its buggin the hell out of me
@3G4life1990 aye, starting in like 2000ish, the car companys started putting a govenor in it, which is basically a restrictor. you have to buy a chip which over writes the old one. you can buy a chip on ebay or wherever u want. my friend has his car all tricked out, but it wont go past 127. my car is a 98 and doesnt have this problem. but you can buy better chips which will increase your cars performance dramatically :)
Lol a rolling road.. Not a dyno?
