i always thot the ingredients were easy to recognize its - licorice -star anise -cassia , not that trashy cinnamon, leave out cinnamon if you cant find cassia -cloves -fresh ginger -scallions -rose wine(substitute with dry sherry if u dont have it) -dark soy sauce -light soy sauce.
This type of chicken dish is best eaten at restaurant in Chinatown, don't try to do it at home, too " much " ingredients used, unless you keep using it forever. If you want to do it just go to Chinatown traditional medical hall and ask the person behind the counter to give a packet of ingredients for making this black soy sauce chicken, they have BBQ pork, roast duck ingredient, and many other for chicken soup, pork ribs, pork brain etc...
