This band on Darktown Strutters' Ball is actually The Jungle KIngs from 1928. Muggsy Spanier on B-flat cornet, Mezz Mezzrow on tenor saxophone, Frank Teschmaker on clarinet, Joe Sulivan on Piano, Eddie Condon on banjo, Jim Lannigan on tuba (you can barely hear him) and Gene Krupa on drums. Red McKenzie does the vocal.
So great to hear this grand tune again. Tesch as a genius on clarinet. A pity that social attitudes of the time had him committed to a mentalm asylum for smoking pot!!
@BobE1945 I don't think was ever in a mental hospital. He was killed in an auto accident (driven by Wild Bill Davison). Leon Rappollo was committed to a mental asylum, however.
and what's more this sounds like nothing more than a run through their playlist. can you imagine. this is greatness! lost forever but preserverd here for one small space in time. thank you.
the credits list other clarinetists that peculiarly sound alot like Teschmacher. If anyone know of the truth to these claim, and if there are other recordings by theses other clarinet players, please let me know. think one was Frankie volvo or something like it on Bullfrog blues.

Mezz sounds quite good on tenor here! He has been denigrated over the years by the critics but has kept very good company on recordings.

Oops - it's Jim Lannigan on double bass here, not tuba. Sorry.
