that explained a lot thx and why when i play some game it looks like my os goes in to 32bit you know explorer bar not transparent and light blue ? can't imagine 128 bit we will have more ram than hdd space lol ;)
@iHasModsHD it is not from a lack of 64bit if that is what you are referring. it is likely that you have a service which could be legit or malicious using to much of your physical memory. have you checked all the processes & services that are running before you use sony vegas?
Question. If they say that a processor is 3.0Ghz Quad Core, does that mean it can run at 12Ghz? Or basically, just 4 processors working at the same time?
Another question is, when they say something like "System requirement is 2.4Ghz or equal? What does that mean?
@Superbeast1980 nope it means that it clocks at 3.0 if all cores execute at the same time, sometimes it will throttle down. Also intel has added that if multiprocessing is not being used, it will throttle up. Cores are about execution in parallel although a lot of code does not quite do it perfectly, it none the less executes more in theory still at the same clock of 3.0 but instead of single points of access the system has multiple.
@Superbeast1980 or equal meas other architectures such as RISC or MPC that use less clock speed but get the same amount of execution completed as its Intel CISC counterpart. so 2.4GHz of intel for say a high end RISC of 1.8 would equal. But that is disappearing anyway. When i did this video, it was years back when single threaded execution was around vs multiple cores.
All you had to say is that with 32 bit you can only have 3gb ram and with 64bit you have have 4 or more... We didnt need a 10 min video that noone can understand
thanks mr bit im gonna be 16 soon and i still understand what this is compared to other people it is much more simple when you explain it in detail 8 bit = max ram 256mb 16 bit max ram= 512 32bit max ram = 2gb and 64-bit max ram = 1gb onwards up to 48gb lol
Your 32 bit programs should still work, from what I hear there's Very little compatibility issues with 64 bit, and Drivers now-a days. Your 32 Bit applications will still run in a 32 bit speed, but your OS will run in 64 bit. As well as your other 64 bit programs, as long as your processor supports a 64 bit OS that is.
@Vlad2641 ah, i had to re-watch to understand your question because for this video instruction set does not mean CISC or RISC or any other type, it = MCH instruction or command to address positions in RAM, bad choice of words i guess. i will annotate.
i thought that 62 bit got more security then 32 bit and also 128 bit is the last one( for atleast now) which is used by the banks and credit card companies....
Are you sure you're not thinking of Password encryptions? Those go by bits too. An operating system's bits just allow you to do more at one time, given that your applications are made in 64 bit.
i know u need more ram, at least 4gb to take advantage of 64bit...but what ab the cpu? is a core 2 duo @2.10 GHz fast enough to take advantage of 64bit?
I think that depends on how often your Processor hits 100% CPU usage. 64 Bit allows you to do more at one time with that application. Which means that application will perform better, but take up more processing power while doing so. If you often find your processor at 100% running your most-used programs, you wont see a big performance boost there, as doing more will only strain your processor more.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my current understanding of it.
@fifmasta yep, i get so much about how much faster and so on. its hard to explain that if software written 16 bit could technically be as faster if not faster if it were just speed & not throughput.
yea 2003 is pretty recent for computers... lol... i've currently got an AMD dual core 5000+ from HP but i'm bout to get an i7 3.2 Ghz and a water cooling system and a whole new set up pretty much... and over clock it to like how ever much juice i can get out of it with good stability.

2^64 = 1 bit more than a 64 bit system but is easier to use for explanation...divide that by 1024^3 is 1.72x10^10 GB of ram that a 64 bit system can handle.
the difference between 32 and 64 bit system is a computer engineering question that is a complicated answer to explain to the average person. I have a video on RAM and 32 bit systems so check it out
every time I decided to take a chance with a 64 bit OS, I horribly regretted it afterwards, and ended up putting a 32 bit OS back on.
Personally I think if Microsoft cared enough about the customers experience, they would create an operating system that handles BOTH 32 bit, and 64 bit instructions.

I thought I would try 64 bit, and then after not being able to run many programs, I put 32 bit back on. So I didn't put 64 bit on because 32 bit wasn't working, I put it on to test it out.
windows 7 64 bit is the most highly advanced operating systems now, and yhh its built for better compatibilty...they wanna make the money they lost on vista
well I actually did try Windows 7 64 bit a while back, and while there is a folder called "Program Files (86)" I found many programs that would not even install, so that ended up just being useless.
I remember that folder was automatically created when I upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit.
I think they might skip out on the 256 bit CPU and go with 512. I did read something about that almost a year ago. The next gen Xbox may use a 512mb CPU. I dont know if its true but the biz on the net was the next gen xbox was going to use a 512mb CPU.
It's funny that nobody seems to notice your blunder at 5:00, where you mention that 64-bit has 17.179.869.184 unique values. Anyone with some common sense can see that this is wrong.
The actual number of unique values should be 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 and that's a LOT more!
I don't understand why you call this a fixed video, when you missed such an obvious mistake....sigh
with vista 64x i have 4gb of ram and a 2.00ghz intel duo core processor... now.. my pc doesnt live up to its specs.. is there anyway i can get rid of vista and install windows xp 32x or something? i dont want to buy windows64xpro can i switch OS's like to linux or the mac OS? or something? please help
might i ask, im not really good with computers, right now im running windows vista with a 32 bit system with 2 gigs of ram, my dad has a disc with windows vista 64 bit. will this make my pc faster?
no, it will not. many think 64bit will equate to more speed, but so many variables have to be in place for that to happen from hardware to software. Your fine with 32bit, so many apps are.... unless you want to upgrade, what cpu do you have?
Since 1kb=1024 bytes, 65.536 bytes=64kB exactly. (65.536/1024=64). This is one of the few measure devices where kilo doesn't mean 1000.
And to be even MORE precise:
If this 16-bit cpu had a 16-bit Data bus aswell, one of theese 64K adresses can actually store TWO bytes, also called a word. So actually we got 64Kwords on a full 16-bit system :)
yes, i know i will have to add an annotation on the calculation, it was an old video and i did not want to repost, there is an old comment about it too a long while back on this vid. It gets confusing when you add registers, BUSs and so on as with the commodore 64 and so on.
dude... THANK YOU! I've been trying to figure out wut the fricken a 32 bit and why all the crazyness over the 64, and even though i didn't get all of wut you said, i still got the jist of things. Thanks alot. You rule XD
@HKFLX4656 It really isnt that simple, you will need to delete and format the partition your on and do a fresh reinstall of the operating system for 64bit your wanting. thanks for your question and hopes this helps :D
i had windows vista 32 bit... and i installed windows 7 64 bit :O i thought it couldnt happen... why ? i didnt know i could install a 64 bit operating system in a 32 bit .... oh and i'm not having any trouble at all.. its better than vista ;)
question: would i be able to upgrade a 32 bit sp1 straight to 64 bit sp2 or would i have to get a 64bit sp1 before i can upgrade thanks..... (i'm not very computer savvy T_T)
I was thinking of getting a new computer and i was looking at all-in-one computers. I saw the Dell XPS One and the Hp Touchsmart Iq506. I run programs like aim and browse the internet a lot. I use itunes and have a lot of things that i plug into my computer via usb. I was wondering if i should get the Hp with 4Gb of ram and windows vista 64bit or the Dell XPS One with 2gb of ram and i believe its 32Bit(if it is not correct me), my question is what would be the best version for me.
a rule to go by, so long as your system meets software requirements it will run 32 or 64, BUT it will eat your HD space and swap virtual ram all the time. If you go 64, at least get 4 gigs.
ok so i multitask a lot on my computer, right now i have a computer with windows vista 32bit and 512mb of ram and i hate it. My question is for mulittasking 64bit with 4GB of memory would be faster then 32bit with 2Gb of Memory right, and also is more software compatible with 64bit now since it was released, cause i dont want any problems were my devices wont work on the computer?
this is theory, you have to have 64bit apps as well, BUT what it does allow is open ram addressing vs limiting many system services to under the 4Gig barrier. You will still use virtual ram with 4 gig, but it will run better. Do not think 64bit will be faster unless all conditions of the bit structure are met.
Hello, im building a new gaming computer, i have 4gb ram, 64 bit cpu and a 512mb graphics card? should i go for windows xp or vista, 32 bit or 64 bit? tnx
My Xp x64 bugs me about "Low Virtual Memory" even with a 16GB Page File. Upped it to 18GB; hasen't bugged me since. I have 4GB of physical RAM too. I think that's kind of ridiculous.
Yeahh... My computer doesn't say if it is a 32 or a 64 bit. I haven't flushed it or anything.. Can someone pleasee help me. Just message or comment me. If needed I will send a picture.
1 quistion i am somewhat computer smart i want 2 know if i have a pentium 4 2.0ghz 3 gb of ram if i get 64 bit xp will i be able to get 8 gigs even know my motherbord only supports 4 gigs
question though..its alot of stuff that doesnt support 64 bit...like flash player...quicktime etc etc...is there a site you can go to that will tell u wen they will be available ?
I think this is a poor explanation. When talking about the number of bits a processor has, you need to specify what part of the processor you're referring to: integer unit, address bus, or data bus. Generally, processors are defined by the integer units: an n-bit processor has registers that are n-bits wide, and natively manipulates n-bit values. The wider the registers, the larger the numbers can be.
number of bits a processor has???? You mean Addressable area, the max address throughput the cpu can handle barring any form linear address extension is the max allocated at any one time. Registers are not addressable area in that context, take for example RISC has many more registers than CISC chips and thus can indeed get more done per cycle, but I hope this video did not digress to that point. :( Thanks for the comment though.
For example, a 16-bit processor does math on 16-bit values natively, which can be as high as 2^16-1 (65535). The issue here is, how do we do math with numbers that have more than 16-bits, say, 32-bits? The larger number has to be broken up into 16-bit values. For example, a 32-bit add operation will take 3 16-bit add operations: one for the lower 16-bits, one for the higher 16-bits, and one for the carry.
This is slow. A better solution is to increase the size of the integer unit. This is why the jump to 32-bit computing was so exciting for PCs. On 32-bit processors, we can do math with numbers up to 2^32-1 (~4 billion). Thats one way the number of bits defines a processor. The other two are the data bus, and address bus. Data moves between the CPU and RAM over the data bus. An n-bit data bus transmits n-bits of data at a time.
Clearly, the wider the data bus, the more datat that can be moved between the CPU and memory at any given time. The old Motorola68k processors had 32-bit integer units and 16-bit data buses, so to load a 32-bit value, the CPU had to load two 16-bit values. Now the address bus is what the CPU uses to specify locations in memory. A CPU with an n-bit address bus can access 2^n different memory locations. The wider the address bus, the more physical RAM the computer can have.
32-bit Intel CPU's have 36-bit address buses, and can address up to 64GB of physical memory. Modern 64-bit Intel CPU's have a 40-bit address bus, and can address up to 1024GB of physical memory.
So remember, when referring to the number of bits a CPU has, make sure you know which part of the CPU you're talking about. The address bus, register sizes, and data buses rarely all have the same value.
no doubt, reminds me of the days of async ram and independent clocks, but getting into all the exceptions is very time consuming for 10 minutes, this vid was a response to another that is now gone. I prefer the principle than get into the complexities as with different chipset to chip bandwidth then into linear address extension and then the other parts of the computer. Most questions i get are centered around RAM as in "how much can i get" type PM.
say we increase ALU to register, but that is only one part as well, like you include with your comment, data and addressable area are all part of the equation, but at that time i had a 10 minute limit and most do not know about execution units and registers although i touched on them in my latest vid.
Means that if you have it, you can use more RAM. This is only really helpful if you run huge programs, especially like video editing and rendering software. For the general person, faster RAM/FSB is ideal for performance after 4gigs.
oh man sry to say it but I DO NOT WANT PROGRAMMERS TO HAVE MORE MEMORY AND SPACE. more instructions? not really-same instructions just more data. I think the worse problem today is programmers neglect hardware thinking the industry will compensate. Why do you think we have such large, bulky software everywhere? I am a hobby programmer who wants to start a business programming and I don't want more bits(or any crap for that matter).
that explained a lot thx and why when i play some game it looks like my os goes in to 32bit you know explorer bar not transparent and light blue ? can't imagine 128 bit we will have more ram than hdd space lol ;)

@Superbeast1980 the 3.0 Ghz is the clock speed of one core so its 4 cores running simultaneously at 3.0 ghz.

the difference:
32bit: 2^32 is the maximum number of bytes that can be adressed (and 32 bit bus width)
64 bit: 2^64 is the maximum number of bytes that can be adressed (and 64 bit bus width)
conclusion: 64 bit is better, but not faster, and also programs need more memory because a pointer now needs 64 bits instead of 32 bits.

Even 4 gigs is useless, the memory on your video card also comes out of this allowable 4 gigs. So most 32 bit systems can only handle around 3

I don't understand why you call this a fixed video, when you missed such an obvious mistake....sigh

might i ask, im not really good with computers, right now im running windows vista with a 32 bit system with 2 gigs of ram, my dad has a disc with windows vista 64 bit. will this make my pc faster?
KamikazeOnDope 2 years ago
no, it will not. many think 64bit will equate to more speed, but so many variables have to be in place for that to happen from hardware to software. Your fine with 32bit, so many apps are.... unless you want to upgrade, what cpu do you have?
mrbit10 2 years ago
u didnt put 128 bit.. even though there isnt 128bit windows, it will be expected to come in the futre

Around 5:10 there comes these calculations:
16-bit~65.536=around 65kb of RAM.
Im sorry to tell you: This is wrong :O
Since 1kb=1024 bytes, 65.536 bytes=64kB exactly. (65.536/1024=64). This is one of the few measure devices where kilo doesn't mean 1000.
And to be even MORE precise:
If this 16-bit cpu had a 16-bit Data bus aswell, one of theese 64K adresses can actually store TWO bytes, also called a word. So actually we got 64Kwords on a full 16-bit system :)

wtf?!
marcvie9 2 years ago
yes, i know i will have to add an annotation on the calculation, it was an old video and i did not want to repost, there is an old comment about it too a long while back on this vid. It gets confusing when you add registers, BUSs and so on as with the commodore 64 and so on.

if you can go to 4 on 64bit do it, the reason being the less swapping that occurs the faster you get in reads and writes

I pay attention to modern games, not the actual details. So can you tell me if there is such thing as 206 bit?
TheBaconator7 2 years ago
Since computers work in increments of 2^nth, you can only get 2 bit, 4 bit, 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit, 128 bit, 256 bit, 512 bit, etc.

SLBenficaboyz 2 years ago
a rule to go by, so long as your system meets software requirements it will run 32 or 64, BUT it will eat your HD space and swap virtual ram all the time. If you go 64, at least get 4 gigs.
mrbit10 2 years ago
ok so i multitask a lot on my computer, right now i have a computer with windows vista 32bit and 512mb of ram and i hate it. My question is for mulittasking 64bit with 4GB of memory would be faster then 32bit with 2Gb of Memory right, and also is more software compatible with 64bit now since it was released, cause i dont want any problems were my devices wont work on the computer?
SLBenficaboyz 2 years ago
this is theory, you have to have 64bit apps as well, BUT what it does allow is open ram addressing vs limiting many system services to under the 4Gig barrier. You will still use virtual ram with 4 gig, but it will run better. Do not think 64bit will be faster unless all conditions of the bit structure are met.

stay 32 with 2gb native, as the rest will simply go virtual and have to swap.

i would go for vista 64

u should NOT take vista if u like to play games, take xp, its best for games

Actually... the games I play'd on XP are also played on Vista, and Vista gives far more of an ability to see the physics than just the detail.

NerdInHisShoe 3 years ago
number of bits a processor has???? You mean Addressable area, the max address throughput the cpu can handle barring any form linear address extension is the max allocated at any one time. Registers are not addressable area in that context, take for example RISC has many more registers than CISC chips and thus can indeed get more done per cycle, but I hope this video did not digress to that point. :( Thanks for the comment though.
mrbit10 3 years ago
For example, a 16-bit processor does math on 16-bit values natively, which can be as high as 2^16-1 (65535). The issue here is, how do we do math with numbers that have more than 16-bits, say, 32-bits? The larger number has to be broken up into 16-bit values. For example, a 32-bit add operation will take 3 16-bit add operations: one for the lower 16-bits, one for the higher 16-bits, and one for the carry.
NerdInHisShoe 3 years ago
This is slow. A better solution is to increase the size of the integer unit. This is why the jump to 32-bit computing was so exciting for PCs. On 32-bit processors, we can do math with numbers up to 2^32-1 (~4 billion). Thats one way the number of bits defines a processor. The other two are the data bus, and address bus. Data moves between the CPU and RAM over the data bus. An n-bit data bus transmits n-bits of data at a time.
NerdInHisShoe 3 years ago
Clearly, the wider the data bus, the more datat that can be moved between the CPU and memory at any given time. The old Motorola68k processors had 32-bit integer units and 16-bit data buses, so to load a 32-bit value, the CPU had to load two 16-bit values. Now the address bus is what the CPU uses to specify locations in memory. A CPU with an n-bit address bus can access 2^n different memory locations. The wider the address bus, the more physical RAM the computer can have.
NerdInHisShoe 3 years ago
32-bit Intel CPU's have 36-bit address buses, and can address up to 64GB of physical memory. Modern 64-bit Intel CPU's have a 40-bit address bus, and can address up to 1024GB of physical memory.
So remember, when referring to the number of bits a CPU has, make sure you know which part of the CPU you're talking about. The address bus, register sizes, and data buses rarely all have the same value.
NerdInHisShoe 3 years ago
no doubt, reminds me of the days of async ram and independent clocks, but getting into all the exceptions is very time consuming for 10 minutes, this vid was a response to another that is now gone. I prefer the principle than get into the complexities as with different chipset to chip bandwidth then into linear address extension and then the other parts of the computer. Most questions i get are centered around RAM as in "how much can i get" type PM.
mrbit10 3 years ago
say we increase ALU to register, but that is only one part as well, like you include with your comment, data and addressable area are all part of the equation, but at that time i had a 10 minute limit and most do not know about execution units and registers although i touched on them in my latest vid.

when i have 64 bit will go more ram to help the processor?please someone reply!quickly
narcis4none 3 years ago
Means that if you have it, you can use more RAM. This is only really helpful if you run huge programs, especially like video editing and rendering software. For the general person, faster RAM/FSB is ideal for performance after 4gigs.
KumaruSworder 3 years ago
oh man sry to say it but I DO NOT WANT PROGRAMMERS TO HAVE MORE MEMORY AND SPACE. more instructions? not really-same instructions just more data. I think the worse problem today is programmers neglect hardware thinking the industry will compensate. Why do you think we have such large, bulky software everywhere? I am a hobby programmer who wants to start a business programming and I don't want more bits(or any crap for that matter).
