  • I have this song in my favorites and have listened to it numerous times. It never gets old to me, especially since my mother used to play like this. She is gone now,but you are on youtube to keep her memory fresh for me.. I admire what you are doing and thank you so much.

  • @shalimara Thank you for taking the time to share your personal comment. I am glad to hear you are enjoying my performance and I am able in some small way to bring happiness into your life. Enjoy.

  • @DerWahreErloeser Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your encouraging comment. Enjoy.

  • another great tune Keni

are you using any special type of strings

or are they just standard light or med guage strings ?

  • @1958wvpicker I like to use Martin Nickel Resonator Bluegrass strings. They are good for lower than standard tunings like open D and G. Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • thanks kenny so on my cbg 4 string would it be cgce? or cgcg

  • Thank you. Mini-Vestapol Tuning 1351 Key of C Cegc. In the key of D Df#ad The other tunings you are suggesting are extensions of Open C Tuning CGCgce 151513 Please understand in "You Got to Move" it is played in Vestapol 151351. The other Open C tunings work 1513 or 1515, but not for this arrangement of the song. You can play in a variety of keys, but the string arrangements must be the same relativity. Enjoy.

  • you should do R.L. Burnside's "Poor Black Mattie"

  • Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, this is a most excellent song. Enjoy.

  • is this in open D ?

  • Thank you for your question. I am tuned down a whole step to Open C. Look to the right of my videos and click on (more info). I usually have the tunings posted there. This song is taught on my instructional video CD 1. Ebay Search: Keni Lee Happy Holidays.

  • one of your best

  • Thank you for your comment. I am glad you are enjoying my videos.

  • You killed it. Great job. How long have you been playing?

  • Thank you. I started playing Rock back in 1979. It was while serving in the USAF stationed in San Antonio Texas back in 1984 that I started learning Blues from instructional audio tapes produced by Stefan Grossman and Happy Traum. Enjoy.

  • Again a great rendition Keni! 5 *****

  • Thank you. I play this song constantly while performing on the subway platforms. It is essential Fred!

  • lovley

  • Thank you. Enjoy.

  • Don't play no rock and roll, ya'll.

Jest plays them straight natchal blues.

    Good on ya.

I've enjoyed Fred McDowell since I was a kid back in the 60`s.

    Can't play nuthin' though.

Shoot. I have troubles playin' a radio.

  • Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Enjoy.

  • Damn dude, you sound like the guy from ZZ top, awesome voice, very fitting for the song.

  • Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed my performance.

  • Oh Fuck Yeah

  • LOL. Thank you for your comment. A little over the top though for a religious song. Enjoy.

  • Every time I hear this slow sliding sound I see the angel of death passing over the doorposts marked in blood, the Red Sea part, the walls of Jericho tumble down, the fire pour down at Elijah's command, the dove descending on the Messiah & the mighty rushing wind of Spirit over the believers of today.

Even though the slide guitar may conjure images of drunkenness and carousing for some, to me it has sort of an ethereal and infinite sound, like sound waves being bent and formed on an anvil.

  • Thank you for your thoughtful comment. From the inside of my music CD, Good & Evil:

Good & Evil are inseparable like the two sides of a single coin. One face reveals itself, while the other face is concealed. They both come from a single source. Angels fall, and become Devils. Devils redeem themselves and become Gods.

The harder we reach upward with our right hand, the further it drives our left hand downward. How quick are we to come to the aid of a brother who has a splinter in his eye

  • but we fail to remove the log that obscures our own vision. Why do we ignore it, and find new ways to look around it?

All we have to do is wash the inside of the cup. The outside is already clean. It has been this way, and will continue to be like this for all eternity.

Generals reach a high status by standing on the dead bodies of their enemies. Saints reap their reward by saving souls from damnation. One foot steps forward, while the other foot goes back. We are going nowhere!

  • WHO OPENS THE GATES OF HEAVEN AND HELL?

  • Very Nice! You may already have it, but check out "I Do Not Play No Rock n' Roll". Incredible album by McDowell.

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes, I have that CD. Fred Mcdowell is certainly in my list of favorite top ten traditional Bottleneck slide players. Enjoy.

  • This has got to be the best version I've seen on youtube so far! Besides the original, of course. You have a good deep voice for this song.

  • Thank you for your kind and encouraging comment. Enjoy.

  • Oh my! I've heard my mother play and sing this up until her passing on May 1st of this year...she was soon to be 80. You have done a fantastic job on this. Thank you so much for posting and sharing with us all. You have taken me down a path of memories today. God bless you in all your endeavors!

  • Awesome! Its great music like this that makes the world go-round.

  • Thank you. Yes, this song definately contains some old foundational musical ideas. Open tuning is a primative technique found all around the world. Also, the rhythm nicely expresses the idea of movement. Enjoy.

  • That's MIGHTY, MIGHTY FINE! I can see and hear them hoe's choppin' the cotton in unison to the beat. You done Mississippi Fred McDowell very proud!

  • Thank you for you interest and comments. Enjoy.

  • I Love Man So Cool I Love Your Slide Style -sounds amazing -cheers

  • Thank you for the kind words. Enjoy.

  • perfect

  • Thank you.

  • youve got a great voice dude

  • Thank you. Trying to sing and match the melody line notes that I play with the Bottleneck slide, has been a great exercise to improve my pitch. Also, tuning the guitar to the right key to match my range is the real secret. Enjoy.

  • Thums up

  • Thank you. Enjoy.

  • Great Job Keni!

I've been working on this tune form your teaching CD. You have a natural ability to make learning easy. Thanks

  • You are welcome. Thank you for your endorsement of my instructional CDs. Please remember to feel free to write, if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • Hey Man!

Great and insightful stuff. What tuning is de guitar in?

    Thanks, JaBo, Holland.

  • Thank you. Please look to the right of my videos and click on, more info. I usually have tuning information there. I'm in Open C. CGCegc Low to high. This is just like Open D DADf#ad, but a whole step lower. Enjoy.

  • Hey, I love it.

    It's a great performance!!!!!!!!!!

    Congratulations.

  • Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed my performance. Enjoy.

  • Awesome stuff dude! You got the feel just right. 5*

  • Well, Mr. Burgess, let me tell ya... you've just "re"inspired me! I can't really play and was giving up when I came across your video! I liked it so much, that since you gave the tuning, I'm gonna work on it! Beautiful job! And if you have ANY suggestions on where I can find info on learning too play a resonator, please post a response, I need all the help I can get!

  • Thank you. I'm glad my video sparked your interested. I will send you information about my instructional video CDs. I think you will enjoy the approach. Please feel free to write if you have any further questions. Enjoy.

  • Watched it again, Great !!

  • Thank you. Happy New Year. Cheers.

  • Great Job on this, I feel inspired to get some picks and learn this like you play it

    Deadly!

  • Thank you. Go for it! Happy New Year. Enjoy.

  • You sound great. I'm just a beginner playing slide, but I learned this in open D. I've never even heard of playing in open C. Is that what Fred McDowell played it in, or is it just your preference? Thanks...

  • Thank you. Actually the Open C I'm playing in, is exactly like Open D, but a whole step lower. Low to high. CGCegc I can sing in D, but lower is much easier on the old pipes. I always tune for my vocal range. There is also an open C tuning CGCGce. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • holy mother, you're great! Have you got tabs? I'm desperatelu tryin' to get this tune, but i cant...

  • Thank you. Yes, I have this song in tab. I teach this song on my Series 1 instructional video CD. The CD contains a tablature file that you can view on your computer or print out. Please go to ebay and search Keni Lee. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • GREAT JOB

  • Hi Kenny. I follow ALL of your vids. Your Great. I just boutgh an Original Hound dog dobro wood body. What type of strings do you recamend? I put on some Phosphurus Bronze acustic and like them better than steel. strings

  • Thank you. If you are planning to tune only below standard like Open D or G, I would recommend a heavier string. I prefer Nickel. Resonators are like Banjos. The sound is developed by vibrating a membrane; skin or cone, not acoustically like a regular guitar using a sound hole and chamber; guitar body. My favorite strings are Martin Bluegrass Resonator Guitar Nickel Wound. You can get them in bulk at a very good price from juststrings. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • you suck

  • Interesting comment to leave on a spiritual song. The only reason I am responding is, I'm assuming your a minor online without supervision. Maybe you should consider spending your time more constructively. Take care, Keni Lee

  • Damn kids.....sigh. Anyway, great song, and I love the way you play it kenileeburgess. I love all your stuff. I work on a few of these tunes myself. Thanks for playing.

  • Thank you. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • ya got that THUMB happenin', that's the hard part fer me.

  • Thank you. Well you know the deal. It is just like everthing else in life. If you want it bad enough, you just keep working on it, until you get it. I guess I really wanted it. Just keep on, keeping on. Enjoy.

  • great song, just noticed how similar the melody is to "Sittin' On Top Of The World", gotta love these old folk blues tunes. sounds great friend.

  • Thanks you for your comment. This song is also very simular to Tampa Red's Things about coming my way. Blues is very resourceful.

  • Great tune, well done sir. What names branded across that resonator? Sounds great. You using an actual bottleneck, or is it a slide you just picked up?

  • Thank you for the kind words. This is a 1993 Duolian made by Don Young of National Resophonic. The slide I made many years ago from a Mateus wine bottle. Unfortunately, they changed the design of the bottle. The bottle was the only good thing, because the wine is really bad.

  • My compliments for all your videos! Unlike many players on You Tube you seem to have complete control over your left hand. Not only do you hit the right notes with the slide, but also also know how to dampen the overtones on the "other" side of the slide. It proves to me you're a very experienced and accomplished player. Many people just let those notes ring out, but you've got the real technique. Also you know how to add the right amount of vibrato, which many people overdo. How did you learn?

  • Thank you for your comments. Regarding Bottleneck Slide technique, my biggest influence comes from Bob Brozmen. He would always say, it's all about tone and rhythm. You don't want to sound like your dragging a brick across the strings. It is one thing to make it sound dirty and distorted when you want, but what you really want is a pure clean tone. Vibrato is another technique that can very easily get out of control. Keeping the slides in time with the music, improves the groove.

  • Thank you very much, my pleasure yo understand. Blue is a feeling.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • Hi Keni, great version and soulful. I play a few notes differently on my harp version because I was doing it from memory from many years ago.(And my vocals were a bit out of tune in a few places.) Nice job, thx for your video response to my version.

  • Thank you. Don't be so hard on yourself, I enjoyed your perfomance and found it very well done. Hey, if we are perfectly on pitch all the time, chances are we wouldn't be here on youtube. This is the real deal here! The good, the bad, and the ugly. lol. Thanks for sharing.

  • I love this song and you totally do it justice. Kudos on a job very well done. THE BLUES LIVES!

  • Thank you. Please visit my page and click on Playlists. The videos are organized for better selection. If you have any questions, please feel free to write. Enjoy.

  • total respect and love this is my favorite song from him with "jesus is on the main line"

  • Thank you. Wow! This is strange. I was just practicing "Jesus is on the Main Line". I'll be shooting the video soon.

  • blues is big

  • KeniLee..........you even sound like Fred. Awesome cover dude

  • Thank you. Please visit my page and click on "Playlists" I organized the videos into groups for better viewing.

  • soulful great sound here

  • Thank you.

  • So good, does a great name and song justice. Keep it up

  • Touches the elemental emotions I seek to have touched when I listen to the Blues.

Confronted pain translated into beautiful art.

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • Very good!Great rendition!

    Joe

  • Thank you Joe, Happy Holidays.

  • Worth every penny for sure, I have a tri cone and although all those pennys took a lot of saving it's the best thing i very bought!

  • Love it! And the national sounds so good.

  • Thank you. The guitars that Don Young makes at National Resophonic are great. Worth every penny.

  • Thank you. This is a Duolian from National Resophonic. It is one of Don Young's earlier versions before he went into mass production. The steel is very thick and heavy. I believe this has changed on his current models. I recorded this in my bathroon. Hard tiles does wonders for acoustics.

  • Man that sounds good. I would like to get my hands on a National like that.

  • This is amazing, I have just started to play county blues ,and I am learning a lot from your lessons!

  • Thank you. As you have realized, the CD is set up to teach Bottleneck Blues so you can understand how to create songs. It is not just a collection of songs to learn, but a method of approaching song construction. Enjoy. I'm glad it is working well for you.

  • Geez, that's cool. I gave it a 5 star rating.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you. The only place I've heard this song is on Sticky Fingers by the Stones and I like your version better.

  • Thank you. This is Mississippi Fred McDowell's version. Check him out on youtube.

  • Always been my favorite too. You play it very nice! No tutorial version?

  • Thank you. Have you been to my page? There is a whole series of lessons in Open D tuning. Please consider working thru them. This song is used to teach some real interesting stuff.

  • Great ol song, very nice playing.

  • Thank you.

  • Hey, that was AWESOME playing! where could I download, or what album would one find this song on? if you please, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Go to Amazon website and search Mississippi Fred McDowell. I'm not sure what album, but look for You Got to Move

  • KeniLee

You absolutely rule. First I find your slide guitar lessons, then I find that you also play Cigarbox guitar (which I also do), and then later on, I find your great version on this classic tune. You my friend, have been blessed by the god of Blues.

  • Thank you. I'll take a blessing any day of the week. Hey, you forgot to mention, I can also do a good job faking that I can play banjo.

  • This is my first time commenting on YouTube, so don't take this lightly when I say "You kick ass!" Beautiful playing, man.

  • Thank you.

  • beautiful playing

  • Thank you.

  • JSarmbru, sorry about that. I was thinking about another tune. Yes, You Got to Move is part of the Open D lessons.

  • Great tune, admirably played. Do you go over this in any of your lessons? There are some parts I'm having trouble picking up. Thanks.

  • Thank you. Please check out the lessons. This series is in Open D. Soon I will be doing a series in open G. It's too early to say if I will teach this tune, but the material in the lessons will clarify a lot.

  • awesome. youve got it spot on. probably one of the greatest songs ever written. keep singing too.

  • Thank you. I agree this is my favorite bottleneck blue song too.

  • Thanks Keni I will continue with your lessons and check out Mel Bay. Will check in with you later. Thanks again for the reply.

  • Great job!! Very much appreciated. Do you know where I can find the Tab for "61 highway blues"? Keep them coming.

  • Thank you. I know of only one book with Fred McDowell's songs. Mel Bay puts it out. I think there is another Bottleneck player on youtube teaching 61 Highway, but honestly, it is a simple tune that is based on the information found in my lessons. It might take a little work, but if you sit down and try to figure it out by yourself, you will learn a lot. Enjoy.

  • thanx again keni,regards bluespower..

  • Thank you.

  • Nicely done! The master would be proud that his legacy lives on.

  • Thank you. This one of my favorite bottleneck blues.

  • What Tuning do you use on this?

  • It is Open C (CGCegc). This tuning is lower than standard like Open D (DADf#ad). Of course, you can tune up above standard and play in Open E (EBEg#be).

  • Is that a resognator it sounds great man.

  • Thank you. Yes, it's a National Resophonic Duolian

  • One of the best interpretations I have ever seen live or on youtube of any blues and that's no lie. Really really great.

  • Thank you. I'm going to teach this song during one of my upcoming instructuional videos.

  • Woah! Great!

  • Thank you. Nice cover of Me and the Devil. What's great about that song is, it is also Kind Hearted Woman. You get two songs for the price of one!

  • Cheers!

  • that's great it's into my favorites

  • Thank you. I was checking out your videos. I like your sound. Summertime cover is cool. I'm covering Summertime also on my upcoming CD. It's a great blues tune.

  • WOOOOOOOW, cool as can be, buddy: in my favs!!!!

  • Thank you. Nice Hey Hey cover. You know, I'm left handed, but I learned right handed because I first learned from my cousin (who oddly enough is also lefted handed). We had a right handed guitar and didn't know any better. Crazy.

  • What!!!! Yeah crazy indeed and incredible! I tried playing a guitar for righties two times and gave up immediately. But there are similar cases of other great guitarist: Nils Lofgren writes with his left hand!

  • Fantastic and authentic version of an early blues standard.

    Keep 'em comin'!!

  • Thank you. I love song this too. I'm currently working with a gospel singer on a tune called Come Back Baby. I should consider covering this tune with her.

  • suberb cover!! give this 10 stars! one of my fav acoustic blues, keep postin!regards bluespower...

  • Thanks Bluespower. I agree, it is a very simple song, but a great example of real early plantation blues. Thanks again for the videos. Keep lookin for thoses gems.
