  • How did he build all that furniture without putting any braces on the legs?

  • My fullest admiration for those volunteers that look after Dick's cabin. Thank you for your efforts in helping preserve this. If I ever make it to Alaska I hope to get there to see what this amazing man made by his own hand.

  • Great video. I would love to see the full uncut footage from the cabin visit. It would be great to hear all of the things that the care taker had to say. Thanks.

  • I hate it when the comments are disabled, but this video isn't, so l can make a comment if l so wish.

  • So are you looking for a winter care taker? I would be happy to apply! This is not a joke.

  • so many people posting there land in america makes me sick, no tresspassing, keep out, stay out, stay off, do not enter, posted, no entry, ass holes

  • @MrChutespan Yes, private property ownership, one of the founding prinicples in America. We also have an enormous amount of public land. Most of it is in the western states - no help to those living in the East. Texas is another State where most of the land is in the hands of private individuals, or corporations. Those fortunate enough to live out West can enjoy exploring millions of acres, Alaska being the ultimate adventure. Live the adventure, but don't tresspass:) Be well!

  • so cool! Glad they are keeping it nice for Dick even though he has passed. Would love to visit there one day.

  • i did not see a wifi router anywhere. how is it possible to live there without wifi?

  • @leloodallasmultipass Yes - no WiFi at Twin Lakes, but it comes pre wired for adventure. Those who still understand Morse code would do just fine with a ham radio in the HF band, or lower. Cheers, Lars.

  • @LarsAlaska haha. no, srsly, where is the wifi?

  • @leloodallasmultipass Yes, actually life is possible without wifi. It is incredible isn't it?

  • @leloodallasmultipass I break out in hives at the thought of it.

  • Thats a really fancy cabin, Builder must been a real craftsman!

  • @Axbent You bet. Hardiest of the breed. A Navy man who was born on a farm in Iowa.

  • @Axbent watch "alone in the wilderness" to see him build it

  • I wish I could live in a place this! I watched these videos years ago and wished the same thing back then.

  • @TheBgcheez Quit wishing, start dreaming, and may your dreams come true.

  • @TheBgcheez its nevert o late to start i see posts like this is dosnt take much to follow the dream just a willingness to learn and lots of time. lol ilive in a cabin 65 km's from the closest town i have to boat to town for supplys i do have a satilite and use gas for my generator im lucky right now im down in the south visiting famaleie for a few month other wise i wouldnt normaly have this much internet..

  • @TheBgcheez Live your dreams instead of wishing to accomplish them. The more you wish, the more you suffer, but once you say you are accomplishing them they become true by themselves. Simple auto-suggestion.

  • Wonderful video.

I have been watching all 4 DVDs about Dick's cabin, have also been reading the first book. This man's story is very fascinating to me. I hope to visit the cabin one day. I'll need to fly from Montreal to Alaska and take a private plane.

  • @normy999 Awesome. Spend some time there, do some hiking. Not as many mosquitos in June and Sept. Good luck.

  • @LarsAlaska I have always wondered how dick was able to do this legally? Maybe you could offer an explanation or a reference. I would appreciate it if you could, i have always dreamed of being able to lead a similar life and what better place than Alaska.

  • @CognitiveAbolition Unfortunately, Dick never applied for a homestead title when he could have and; when the area became a national park, the issue became a point of contention. However, the park service had to tread lightly, to avoid looking like the bad guy. Dick was sending them film and he was already becoming popular. Homesteading is no longer allowed, but one can apply for a remote land sale - which is done when Alaska opens up certain public lands... Good luck.

  • @LarsAlaska ah i understand, thanks for the response.

  • @CognitiveAbolition "i have always dreamed of being able to lead a similar life and what better place than Alaska."

the same here. I truely wonder how i would feel if i would live there alone for so long. You cant tell. Some people simply couldnt last, they would realize they need the presents of other people even if they expected different

  • @Serpico261 Exactly, my friend. That is why i said lead a similar life. It is difficult to find like minded individuals in this day and time, especially women. The thought of leaving the shower and the cell phone behind is unbearable it seems, as if no person has had to do without. I am positive i would need some human interaction. My plan, which is in the works, includes others.

  • Thank you, your video is very inspiring. Well done!

  • Very nice video and the music goes well with it!

  • Why is OIL written on the gentlemans hand

  • @Lisaj4431 Writing on the hand is actually a number, 0162. The hand is there to show perspective - Dick used logs that were 8 to 9 inches across (21cm) on the wide end. Narrow ends were about half that, making a twenty foot length pretty heavy. Regards, Lars

  • Nice, but stupid music.

  • @MeOnYT Please elaborate... and offer another recommendation. Cheers, Lars

  • Wow, That is truly beautiful ! I am very envious of your visit there - I may have to go soon !

  • @Hockeycoho No wonder the area was turned into a national park. Some very remote and beautiful hiking to be done there. But it is wild - from the weather, to the topography and beyond. Hope you make it. Cheers, Lars

  • Song - 'Cannon'.

    Composer - 'Pacabel'

Not sure if I spelled his name correctly.

I believe, for a period in his life, this man fulfilled a primitive dream for all men, of this techno filled 21st century rat race we struggle through, to eek out an existence, trying to maintain our sanity, when our spirit longs for this freedom, healing of your soul.

    Uh, sorry. Too deep?

  • @MrOhevi Not at all! Happy New Year and good luck with the resolutions:) Cheers, Lars

  • @MrOhevi, not too deep....very well said. Perhaps you have explained why I am so fascinated with Dick's story.

  • What song is playing? Whom is it by?

  • I'd love too go see this place!

  • Is Spikes cabin still standing?

  • @MrDrjfan Yes, and in pretty good shape. A short hike over from Dick's.

  • Comment removed

  • @LarsAlaska Thanks for your reply. I was wondering, where do the volunteers stay? and is the canoe in your video the same one he used?

  • @MrDrjfan Volunteers were staying in Spike's cabin and yes, it's Dick's original canoe. Be well and happy new year.

  • @LarsAlaska Same to you, nice video Lars.

  • Wow, I wanna go there too! :)

  • Is Spike still alive?

  • How did you set up for this trip?

  • @blackvitruvianman Weather is the biggest factor. By living in Alaska, we were able to pick the best weather day to travel. If you're visiting, you're at the mercy of nature. Twin Lakes can be a bipolar tiger, going from beautiful one day, to a dangerous angry cat the next, as you know if you've done any mountian flying. If you need transportation, Babe's grandson can fly you there. Lake Clark Air is based out of Port Alsworth and has an office at Merrill Field. Not cheap. Best of luck, Lars.

  • @LarsAlaska Thank you very much for your reply.

  • 4 ppl have no soul

  • @cdubmeyer What makes you so sure people have no soul? Or are you referring to four people in particular?

  • @LarsAlaska 4 people in particular that disliked this video

  • @cdubmeyer Ahh, interesting point. I think it may be fewer than 4 - perhaps one or two voting twice. Their explanation was that Twin Lakes should not be turned into a tourist attraction. In reality, it's so off the beaten path, that it neither is, nor is likely to become a "tourist" destination. A more fitting description would be "beautiful wilderness destination" that sees the occasional visitor and which has a small following comitted to keeping Dick's cabin in good shape. Be well!

  • @LarsAlaska you can't vote twice from the same account on the same video usually, but yet it would be a great tourist spot

  • Thank you for the video.

  • @blackvitruvianman You're most welcome and glad you enjoyed it. Cheers,

     Lars

  • I own both of his books. Amazing man!! Please do not pass up the chance to read his diaries. My dream is to visit this cabin one day.

  • I spent 6 months living in Alaska and never got to visit this place. Would love to go. Is it still legal to lease a bit of land and build a cabin nowadays?

  • i suppose a person couldn't do that nowadays? If so, I would be game...

  • I'd move there in a heartbeat.

  • @DenimZero He sure could. Mentioned so in his diary. Twin Lakes is on about the same latitude as Anchorage, so wouldn't expect to see the aurora as frequently as in Bettles, or Fairbanks.

  • Thanks for the great video. I was fortunate to visit Dick's cabin back in August. We backpacked over from Turquoise Lake, around the mountains, and up to Twin Lakes for our pickup by Lake Clark Air at Hope Creek (we were in LCNP for 6 days). It truly an amazing place. Monroe (the volunteer seen here) is a fascinating guy, I really enjoyed talking with him!

  • It's called a cache! You got the idea on why they were built. Keeps out the critters and serves as a freezer in the fall, winter and spring. When you want a steak, go up and get a chunk! Great stuff!!

  • ...that was nice....

  • Dick would have loved the way his cabin has been cared for through the years.

Would love to visit twin lakes myself one day.

    A "Mecca" for Proenneke-fans :o)

  • does anybody know the sing playing on the piano?

  • @tslabjr7 It is Pachelbel's Canon in D

  • thank you for taking care of Dicks place.

  • @dirtTdude Hi dirtTdude,

Actually the National Park Service funds the upkeep and the fellow seen speaking in the video is the volunteer, who helps with the upkeep and looking after Dick's cabin. Like Dick, he's a fine carpenter and master logsmith. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Lars

  • IVE BEEN BLESSED-CURSED TO LOOSE EVERYTHING EVEN MY HEALTH, ON MY WAY TO WV- I LOST THE CAMPER I WAS LIVIN IN. I NOW LEASE A PATCH OF LAND FROM AN OLDER WOMAN WHO SAID I CAN BUILD A CABIN IN HER WOODS BY THE CREEK/SPRING- I DRINK RIGHT OUT OF-(ONLY MINNOWS). ITS A DREAM COME TRUE,NO WAY TO IT BUT HIKING,IM 51YRS OLD, GET DISABILITY, AND THERE IS A FREE GAS WELL ONLY 10 FEET FROM THE CABIN SITE- ITS WEIRD HOW BAD THINGS BRING GOOD IF YOU GO WITH GOD- IVE PRAYED FOR THIS FOR SO MANY YEARS

  • It's as close as most of us will get to true solitude, is watching these videos. I was born later in life when living gets complicated. If I get to enjoy visiting Dick's cabin with my three sons before I die, I will consider it one of my life's highlights. None of us will have the chance to replay his adventures. I read his journals with envy and can say they scare me a bit. I believe I just missed doing something similar before building a life of family. Which I wouldn't change for anything.

  • @scotialures1 The chance to raise a family is a tremendous gift. No doubt you took the right fork in life. All the best to you, LarsAlaska

  • The park service also has a small office and museum (representative of the history of Lake Clark and surrounding area) located at Port Alsworth. Not sure of the operating hours, but was open when we were there in early June - found it to be a nice stop. If you don't have your own plane, Lake Clark Air and several other smaller operators routinely fly folks to the the Twin Lakes area. For its size, Port Alsworth is a pretty amazing little town.

  • my friend and i are in the works for a camp trip to dicks cabin. loved your video. are there certain times that the cabin is open/somebody there? any info would be greatly appreciated. i can wait to go!

  • @dmesz311 The cabin is never locked, to my knowledge, but the park service requests that you camp in the designated site on the far side of Hope Creek, a very short hike from Dick's cabin. For example, if you were there at a time of year when emergency shelter was required, you could seek that shelter in his cabin. That's the way it was when Dick lived there, and that's the way it is now. The park service looks after the cabin daily during the summer. Less frequently in winter. Cheers, Lars

  • Great video, great song, Dick would have approved. I understand Dick survived several bear attacks while there. I believe the definition of wilderness should include any place where a bear attack is possible. You did a great job on this video. Some people are impossible to please. Just ask their wives. I'm sure they will be the first to tell you how inadequate they are.

  • @namznej :) Too funny. Thanks for the comment and have a nice week, Lars.

  • I LOVE THE MUSIC..IT'S SO RELAXING... LIKE THE VIEWS.

  • Having only recently read the book "One Man's Wilderness", I'm happy to find videos like this. Thank you.

  • This is a stupid music video

  • @wellthatsmymama Tell me some better music. I'm doing another Alaska video and need a recommendation...

  • @LarsAlaska Don't bother to ask him, he'll probably recommend 40 cent.

  • @LarsAlaska I've always liked the Alpine Symphony by Strauss. It's an amazing piece!

  • @wellthatsmymama Well that's such useful feedback. Can't just enjoy something?

  • I don't like making this into a tourist destination. The true pilgrimage is to the wilderness. This is not wilderness anymore.

  • @aaronfromhastings By that definition, it was never a wilderness. If you read Dick's journals, you'll see that visitors have been flying to Twin Lakes even before he built his cabin. If your plane breaks down there, it'll feel like wilderness pretty quickly. Should you ever make it to Twin Lakes, and I highly recommend trying, you'll see it's still every bit as beautiful, remote and peaceful as when Dick lived there. Be well. Cheers, Lars

  • @aaronfromhastings have you ever been in a real wilderness?

  • @kenofseattle bears dont have a hard time climbing u obviously never seen a beer in the wild before

  • Thanks for Placeing this awesome video of your trip here on the tube Loved it

  • How in the heck do you replace the bottom logs!?!?

  • @porn1978 likely need to jack up the building a bit, hold it up, pull them out, custom fit new ones in, remove jack. just guessing thou

  • @CanadianReich That makes perfect sense tho!. I couldnt imagine any other way of doing it.

  • @porn1978 Yep, that was how the logsmith had explained doing it.

  • @LarsAlaska Thanks!. I learned something new.

  • How awesome!

  • Pachelbel, Canon in D

  • George Winston, the Kenny G of the piano. Otherwise, a good video.

  • I'd love to be a bush pilot.

  • thx for doing this video

  • @kenofseattle That was good idea! Thank you!

  • whats the tall mini cabin for?

  • @porn1978 It's a Kash (I'm not sure on the spelling but thats how it sounds) anyways, it's used for meat storage, so bears wont get into it, and birds wont peck at it.

They make for a good fort when your a kid aswell.

  • Is it possible to contact you about your trips to Dick Proenneke's Cabin?

    Mitch (MaddDawgg@me.com)

  • What was he using the rocks on his stove for?

  • @tcrusader Put inside his boots.

  • Home Sweet Home... R.I.P Dick :)

  • Thank you so much for this video, and for helping maintain Dick's cabin. I am a big fan of his. I have all his books, and DVD's, and I hope more of is journals are published again some day soon. Again, thank you, from northern Wisconsin:) I would dearly love to be able to visit Dick's cabin some day. On my bucket list too.

  • @LarsAlaska haha...i was just crackin wise....those brown bears are a hell of a lot bigger then the black bears around here...so id probably be drugging myself haha

  • My girlfriend and I are planning on backpack camping a couple of nights near Dick's cabin. Did you stay at the camping area across Hope Creek? Just wondering what to expect?...Greg

  • My girlfriend and I are planning on back pack camping near Dick's place this summer for a couple of nights. Did you guys stay at the camping area across Hope Creek? Just wondering what to expect...Greg

  • I loved this documentary about this man and his cabin.. I would love to take a trip to see this place and stay there.

  • Added to my bucket list.

  • The song is called "Variations on the Kanon" by George Winston. The Kanon, or Canon, was origininally written by Johann Pachelbel, around 1680, and is perhaps his most famous composition.

  • song?

  • What a great legacy to leave behind, Dick Proenneke is a true legend.

  • Comment removed

  • Better than any modern home

  • Wish I had a dollar for every man who daydreamed of a place and a life like that at Twin Lakes, Alaska, and Dick's life. *sigh*

  • Just been reading one of his many journals in pdf format .I advise you read if your into wilderness living.

  • I am SOOOOOOO glad someone is still looking after DP's cabin. Thank you for doing that. If there are any time slots that need filling, I know someone who would love nothing more.

  • Long live the legend of Dick Proenneke !!

  • Hi David. Lake Clark National Park was pretty spectacular, though largely inaccessible, without a plane. Lots of wildlife. Thanks for the feedback and Happy New Year, Lars
