The Romans conquered Italy. Italy is a mix of. Italy has been like that for milennia. Italy has population density, resisting invading populations. Proper ethnic cleansing did not occur. Ergo, Roman influence survives in language, gesture, customs.
Take the Tudors for example. Does this accurately represent King Henry VIII? A fat and nerdy, but clever king with a bad temper, syphilis and ginger hair? Yes/No? Answer: It's not meant to capture the reality - it's a romantic dramatisation of events, created by Irishmen and Canadians. NEVERTHELESS - Irishmen being English, Englishmen being Irish (like Alan Rickman as DeValera), Scots being Irish, etc, is all possible. But Roman Emperors played by English/Irish/Scots/W is too much "Carry On"
@emmetor you're even too dumb to realize what I said earlier. It wouldn't be more appropriate to let an italian play Augustus or Caesar. But your fascist and nationalist scumbrain won't realize that. Go on, dismiss one of the best shows out there just to legitimize your stupid ideology, won't keep you away from it. From ending your miserable situation either, just for the record.
@Kathrinoyo Fascist? WTF are you talking about? I'm the most anti-racism person you could hope to find on the internet. I love and celebrate all races and cultures - I object to fascism and racist ideals, and I argue against the ideas of stupid people who post those ugly videos. THIS is NOTHING to do with that. I just object to TV programs that are... crap. You are like... the rudest girl I ever came across.
@emmetor Of course it's racist. A non-racist person wouldn't even think about how appropriate or inappropriate it is to let an english actor play a roman. You're obviously just plain stupid. And Rome = crap? Lolwut? What's "quality" then in your opinion? The big bang theory? Oh boy, get lost. It's even painful to argue with you, can't imagine how your dry brain must feel.
@Kathrinoyo There was a major outcry when Irishmen played Greeks in Alexander. Do you remember the newspapers at that time? What about 300? - where comic book characters play real historical figures... It has nothing to do with racism... God, you are so dramatic...calm down Kathrin, please. This is a discussion about a TV program for God's sake
@emmetor and .. because there was an outcry, it's not racist? Aha. Superior argumentation!
It's still, because it's diversifying racial traits. I met lots of italian people who thought that way, so it's no surprise to me.
and the other thing about language, gesture, customs is pure ethnical propaganda. You should add germanic (langobard), muslim (turkish), franco-spanish (d'anjou) references to your embarassing theories about italian autocracy.
@Kathrinoyo What racial traits? I never said anything about race. I never said anything about autocracy. I never said I agreed with the Alexander outcry - I thought it was amusing. This is all just common discourse - for your history lessons. If you have something to show, then show it with science, please.
@emmetor Not talking about ancient greek colonies (Pompeii) and that the real inharitans of italy, the etruscans, most probably came from anatolia and ionia. Finally add all the diversion between germanic and roman influences in later roman times, the francs for god sake and you have kind of a clue how stupid your "romans = italians" theory is.
@Kathrinoyo I can say the exact same thing to you: what is germanic? Another linguistic group with influences from many countries. ANYWAY, the etruscans were part of greater Rome from the beginning. And they still exist today. All the genetic components for Romans still exist in Italy...
@emmetor But I'm not talking about Britain, the subject in question is whether Italians better represent the Romans. The only way I see an argument for this is by way of language. The Italian language stems from Latin, but then again so do many other Romance languages.
I have stated why I don't believe Italians more accurately represent the Romans, (through historical points which you do not refute and agree with). I'm curious to know, what forms your opinion if not nationalism?
@3dwardcullen69 Just on one point there, I do agree with some of your history, however I don't share your conclusions that authentic Romans are unidentifiable in Italian culture. I am mystified why nationalism would come up in the first place. I just find authenticity inspiring: this program may(?) be more historically accurate than Gladiator (which I loved), but gladiator can give you a glimpse. This program gives the feeling more of a different empire, do you understand?
@emmetor they don't act in english mannerisms and logic. The script is so well written and purely based on knowledge about roman ways of thinking, nothing could be less important than the nationality of those actors. Besides, italian "mannerisms" and "logic" is as far away from roman standards as it can be. Same with modern and ancient germans. Why do you guys always think that living in the same place means being connected? There are coratians with more "roman" in them than you have.
@Kathrinoyo Ehm...yes I would imagine that there are people in former Illyria with more 'roman' in them, than I have. Nevertheless, Rome is still Rome. Dont tell me that England has more connection with ancient Rome than Italy does, because that's horsemanure. Majority of southern Englishmen are a German/Dane/Celt mix. Its glamourous to have famous actors, but it lacks authenticity.
@emmetor It doesn't, just because you are a lingustic and ethnical fascist. And I'm enclined to just look at your rambling as a very dumb way to mask your envy. Italian studios could've never done anything even close to HBOs Rome in any point there is.
And just for the heck of it: you clearly don't know what you are talking about. This show was filmed in italy and most of the supporting cast was italian. So far for being "too english". Bullcrap.
@Kathrinoyo That's complete rubbish. What's next? Shaka-Zulu portrayed by blokes from Doncaster? Or Genghis Khan played by the cast of East-Enders. Or a reenactment of the battle of Amritsar where the English fight themselves with some Indian extras? You are the fascist, in that you would prefer to re-write history to suit your own world view. Sad.
@emmetor Wow, now I'm the fascist because I don't have a problem with english people playing romans? Wait, somethin went wrong here. Oh yeah, your scum-life was cast out of your mothers womb. Do me a favour and just kill yourself, faggot.
I couldn't get into this show - some of the sets are fantastic, and I like the fact that they added realistic colours on the buildings, etc, but the actors are mostly english, doing English things, with English mannerisms and English logic. No offense to english actors - fantastic job lads. However, this series needs Italians. The Italians on Passion of the Christ were way more believable as Romans.
@emmetor Really how do you know that? are you 2000 years old? I personally don't see how Italian actors would add more realism than British actors. Italians are not Roman.
@3dwardcullen69 Come on, Edward, are you serious? I mean, really? I studied latin, I speak spanish and some Italian and French, I've been to Italy far more times than I can remember - I've been to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Roma many former roman colonies and I have a good sense of the type of stuff romans got up to. Non Italian actors are just not believable in most Roman roles
@emmetor Well, then may I say that I've also been to Italy, I've seen the beautifully preserved ruins at Pompeii as well. And I have studied ancient history from as long as I can remember. But even my lifelong fascination and study of Roman history does not entitle me nor you emmetor, to say that Italians would be better suited to play Roman roles than Spanish, French, Romanians, Portuguese and yes even British. There is yet a lot of uncertainty of just who the Romans were.
@3dwardcullen69 Eddie, I understand that Rome is your passion. I understand that you have some historically accurate points. I do not concur or agree with your main theory. I know you don't concur with mine. However, I don't disagree with the historical points you raised. I just think they had much less effect than you imagine.
Britain is not only distant from Rome, it has had so many later invasions that is unrecognizable as a Roman culture
@emmetor As for your question, I dont know how to answer that. Queen Victoria? I mean the British are perfectly suited for such roles, seeing as how British history extends further than the reign of queen Victoria, where as Italian history started during the reign of queen Victoria.
@3dwardcullen69 Italian political unification is completely irrelevant. Everyone knows the romans didn't have vespas, didn't eat pasta, etc. However, so much of ancient Rome still persists in Italian attitudes, culture, language, tradition, and traces in other parts such as sardinia and catalonia. Using barechested models from London doesn't capture it, the culture is different and the Roman mojo missing.
@emmetor This "Italian mojo" may not have been traditionally Roman at all. Who is to say the Romans behaved like modern Italians? Why couldnt they have had, Greek or Spanish "mojo"? The truth is, Roman civilization discontinued in Italy for 1800 years. Italy today is a mixture of Germanic, Northern African as well as some Roman influences. And you cannot ignore this. It is easy to go to Italy and be fooled into thinking that the Romans may have lived like Italians. But we just dont know
@3dwardcullen69 About the mojo - that's the point. Half of Italy has had huge Greek influences for not just centuries, but for millenia. So, the mojo may well be Greek in origin. what about gestures and hand signals? Surely, shared fragments of culture from across the empire can hint strongly that it descended from some roman cultural fragment (and previously from wherever).
@emmetor Did I not just finish saying that these things may not be Roman? The hand gestures, the attitude, the italian 'mojo' that modern Italians have may not be originally Roman. There is no way of proving that the Romans behaved like Italians. BTW hand gestures, are not only characteristic of Italians, a lot of different cultures use hand gestures to communicate emotions better. Since we dont know how the Romans truly behaved, they could have behaved like the British for all we know
As they say: "It's not TV, it's HBO!". Excellent, mind-blowing series with a perfect cast. James Purefoy as Mark Antony and Ciaran Hinds stole the show.
Rest in Peace Erica Gantt.
