"The Great Patriotic War" was the war for self- preservation of people and nations. If it wasn't for Soviet people,fighting against nazis, half of Europe would be speaking German now, and the other half would seize to exist, nation wise. Speaking German might not be the worst thing that could happen to a person, but being put into a gaz camera was a high possibility as well, at least for some nations. Or being enslaved for the others. Stalin's regime was certainly evil, but at least the discrimination wasn't done on the racial basis. After Stalin died, it was nowhere near to what it would've been under nazis in terms of repressions.

Settling a land dispute is not starting a war. It was the British Empire which initiated war against Germany, despite numerous attempts by Germany to seek peace. And let's not forget that it was Britain which granted Poland a mutual aggression pact in the first place; something the militaristic, ultra-nationalist Marshall Rydz-Smigly couldn't have been happier about as it fed into his machinations of marching into Berlin.
