I really want one of these cameras 8D Getting one in a few weeks or months... looking great!
Does a 70-300mm Sigma lens sound okay for this camera? I want to mostly take pictures of my pets, some wildlife (amateur), and dog shows. So I really don't need macro that much, mostly I need to zoom a lot so I thought that'd be a great lens. Cause it's cheap.
@spameister to be honest with you most cameras dont do auto focus too well. thats why you set it to "Live Mode" so you fouz before the shot, then it autofocus very slowly while shooting so you dont blur.
@pamken29 A good video editing program would be, final cut pro, after effects, or standard imovie for mac, i have the newest mac book pro laptop and it is a little slow with the HD quality video
@mremmyG it isnt agaist you don't worry, its just that i cant believe that at your age, your parent buy a camera like this, anyway, its in general, i never saw a 13 years old kid using a reflex camera. but its ok :) if you like your camera i'm happy because i got the same too ! hope we can ride togheter one day ! :P be cool !
@Ic0neStudio what's wrong with a 13 year old using a dslr? let alone owning one? they probably have a huge interest in photography to own this camera, and just as long as they can afford it! this isn't exactly a professional dslr either. try looking up the eos 1ds mark four.
@darklink09 Yes, it just says Kiss X3 on the front instead of 500D and i think it only has English and Japanese language choices. But neither of those effect me
I was figuring out how come his AF doesn't make any sound when he uses it, but it seems he is using MF with a USM lens. I just tested it with my 500D and it seems to work great then :) When using the AF then you can hear the noise in the background, specially in quite places
@irichie79 bit rubbish isn't it about hearing the AF during the videos... although i'm still contemplating getting one of these.. was only going to use 18-55mm standard lens supplied...
do you know if quality is better if a tripod is used? i have seen test videos of very different qualities with this same 500D...
@MariluLane i find it irritating to hear the AF when i watch the videos again, it's ok if you edit it with a music in the background though lol.
I am using the 17-85mm USM lens, it's working great even when I MF. Although the lens is a bit heavier then the kit lens, you will need to get used to it and just practice filming with it, specially when zooming and MF at the same time. A tripod would be ofc the best thing for filming although I don't see myself carrying one all the time. :)
@irichie79 hey thank you irichie!! :) yeah this AF issue is a real question because i dont see any alternative camera for me and canon is so great but - why have this stupid noise??!?!?!!! lol ;) i will look out for your vids!!!! have a great time in paris!!! :)xxxx
@MariluLane Just keep in mind, the 500D is still a SLR, mainly for the pictures, the movie mode is just an extra :) But you should either check out the 500D or 550D, you won't regret it :)
@irichie79 very true, but buying a whole video camera as well is so expensive!!! lool i think i'll go for the 500D, altogether it seems like the best option overall ;)
you should look up some tuts and guides to get better results from your photos, learn about ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed, macro etc. There are also quality options, I recommend RAW, as it's the highest quality
Hey, great quality and superb range of shots/subjects. Quick question - is all the audio on this video from the on board camera? and is the audio any good? finding it difficult to judge on youtube though with people compressing differently, but guess you'd hear it better on pc speakers/through a TV?
Hey, Great quality and excellent range of subjects. I'm thinking of trading in my canon eos 350d body for the 500d, but i was wondering - is the audio you on this video form the onboard microphone? and is the audio any good?
Incredible picture, another world like compared to the S5 I've used. Thanks for the show. These sorts of images are motivating me to retire my 35mm SLR Elan II. Pretty sure I'll be able to use the lenses, though not IS versions.
Yea i know, I was just using sports as an example because they are always fast paced. But anything that has things moving around fast, you should use 60 fps. Do you know of a program that splits frames in half, and if Sony Vegas Pro does it do you know how. That would be helpful.
60 fps video is more often than not interlaced. Each frame has two fields. So we have 60 fields per second.
It's hard, but possible, with special high quality de-interlacers, to convert each field into a deinterlaced frame - *without* losing vertical resolution.
It gets complicated. *Many* de-interlacers will only deinterlace 60i to 30p. But 60i -> 60p *is* possible.
I'm on Linux so I can't speak for Windows software that will do this...
I actually think I just converted 1080i to 1080p on Sony Vegas. Increasing the Frame rate from 30 to 60 on the Render as will increase the FPS by 2x. Along with improving video quality and doubling the file size. Decreased video lag. Only problem is though is that the Audio will not match up with the video anymore. And why do you use a Linux just curious.
After conversion, play back frame by frame. You'll see if any frames were repeated...
As for Linux, it's actually quite good.
Video editing sucks on Linux, mostly.
However, there is mplayer and mencoder, the grand master overlord of video players and converters. Many Windows based converters and players are using that code....
It has 30fps, but that's for 720p, and the difference between 1080/720p is none. There's literally no difference in the quality of the picture that it produces. There's just more pixels on the screen.
haha nice i have one of this, theres a trick for 500d to get high aperature (through out shooting) for movie shooting. Look up google "how to trick 500d" something like that, it works.
just hope that in the future they'll release a firmware for more 'manual' settings for movie shooting though.
Against the facts there are no arguments, the results speak for themselves. T1 is the best. Just put a better lens than the kit and will be ready for any situation.
I guess he used the auto focus with a USM lens, with the kit lens the AF is very noisy. I have my 500D since last week and i'm very overall pleased with the quality, either pictures or movies (using the manual focus then)....will buy a 2nd lens with USM soon....
Lol I just went out and bought a Canon Rebel T1i I can not seem to figure out how to use the video recording mode.. I guess I need a "Digital Photography for dummies book" lol
indeed, it was really nice. but he didnt move the focal lenght, it stayed the same for the entire shot. The only thing that was changing was the focus distance.
I wonder how its video compares to a dedicated video camera like a Sony Handycam HD - i don't expect it to be as good, but maybe the lenses and that big sensor actually make it better???
The Rebel T1i is $150US cheaper, and the Canon records in FULL HD 1080P (@20fps) and i heard the focusing is faster on the canon as well - which is an important feature of course.
And live view is excellent except for the Nikon the screen is more maneuverable.
D90 has some negative aspects regarding videos in comparison with the Canon.
Canon makes videos up to 30 mins at once, while the D90 ony max 5 mins. Canon has autofocus (even its loud on the kit), D90 doesnÄt have AF at all. Canon offers 30fps @ 1270, while Nikon only offers 24fps. Canon even has a good "Full HD" option for filming slowly moving objectives, while Nikon does not offer "Full HD" at all. Just sound is a biiiiit better on the Nikon, but don't think that this is a killer neither.
yes you can auto focus by selecting the AF mode on the lens and pressing the star button but MF is better as you get less noise as the mic is built into the camera.
i hope its ok that i took this video for part of my music video?..

There is a lot more than just sports. Anything with panning or large objects moving by, like cars or a child running by.
If you're using a tripod and recording just a talking person, then fine, 30 fps is adequate. For anything moving, 60 fps looks a *LOT* better.

zooming smoothly becomes an issue with dSLRs with video.
Its noisy and shaky and the auto focus is a little trouble some. manually focusing could cause more shake.

noslen1968 2 years ago
Its better. hands down. the 500d records better then most DVD HD cams.

wow, what amazing video quality!!! i want this camera so bad!!!
does anyone have anay advice on the nikon d5000 vs. canon t1i???
any feedback will be much appreciated :)
treehuger501 2 years ago
The Rebel T1i is $150US cheaper, and the Canon records in FULL HD 1080P (@20fps) and i heard the focusing is faster on the canon as well - which is an important feature of course.
And live view is excellent except for the Nikon the screen is more maneuverable.

wow, this is really amazing! Im starting to think about getting a D90 so I shoot video through all my expensive Nikon lenses.
tinkernator 2 years ago
D90 has some negative aspects regarding videos in comparison with the Canon.
Canon makes videos up to 30 mins at once, while the D90 ony max 5 mins. Canon has autofocus (even its loud on the kit), D90 doesnÄt have AF at all. Canon offers 30fps @ 1270, while Nikon only offers 24fps. Canon even has a good "Full HD" option for filming slowly moving objectives, while Nikon does not offer "Full HD" at all. Just sound is a biiiiit better on the Nikon, but don't think that this is a killer neither.

Can you do optical zoom while recording?
Can it do auto focus while recording?
Is yes yes, it would be my optimal camera
Would u upload the original videos somewhere, Thanks
midoladido 2 years ago
Zoom - yes, manually on the lens - auto focus ; nope, you need to focus manually.
realdimension 2 years ago
thanks for your fast reply :)
midoladido 2 years ago
No, you can auto focus while filming.
Brucey69 2 years ago
yes you can auto focus by selecting the AF mode on the lens and pressing the star button but MF is better as you get less noise as the mic is built into the camera.
