  • I found this video several years ago and it still just as mesmerizing. Rinat is my hero.

  • Is anyone else totally reminded of "Shakespeare In Love" when watching this??

  • She's absolutely stunning, and I'm a girl.

  • Lovely. What a singer. great character too.

But what a terrible video quality. Such a pity, because there is a lot to look at.

What a production this is!! Singing, acting, music, dress (albeit not from Mozart's time but later-which i like too) and decor.

  • She plays guy, it's wonderfull beauty - be a young guy, as she woman.

  • very nice, although the finale is kinda unorthodox

  • hi everyone- just a question to whomever might know- The way that Rinat Shaham is singing in this song- is that just vibrato or something more? It totally sounds like more than vibrato because it sounds fast. It reminds me of the way I have been told to not sing like where you make a false vibrato in your throat- any help would be appreciated because it confuses me and I think I hear that kind of singing in other operas too. Thanks in advance

  • @loverofclassics hello~

So, there are too main kinds of vibrato. Forced, and natural.

You can almost always tell forced because people use their throat to produce it and their chin shakes. For what I mean, look at that little girl Jackie Evancho singing "O mio babbino caro".

Natural vibrato is made by the circulation of air used by the singer. There is no throat involved.

Classical & Opera singers develop their voice to have clear diction and they breathe properly so they can develop vibrato.

  • oh this songgg truely amazing and so is the singer astoundingly brillant

  • I do not find this video anything special but I am almost certain I saw this singer at either Symphony Hall or Town Hall in Birmingham 2/3 years ago and she sent shivers down my spine which to me is always a sign of a great voice. Sorry to say never heard of her again until watching this video. I think most fans of any singer will agree it is always better to see them live and judging from the applause she received on that particular evening she has found a few more.

  • This is great! I know it's supposed to be understood that Cherubino is a boy, and he's just slammed into puberty and has become a bit of a menace because of it, something like that... but most of the time I really have to fight to suspend disbelief. I don't have to so much here. Part of it is make-up, but her manner is perfect, the shifty eyes and uneasy smile and fidgeting about all add to the effect. And of course, her lovely voice.

  • @TheComplaisantLover She is the BEST(IMHO) I have heard&seen !

  • I love her intepretation!!

  • Reverse trap ftw :)

  • I would love to see the whole opera from this production, is it on the internet?

  • so correct. Back then they dressed up women as men.

  • great lungs

  • i am learning voi che sapete and i am using this as my guide to learn it. its excellent

  • @TheComplaisantLover It's BECAUSE she looks like Dudley (not to say Dud) Moore that she is, as you say, 'rather hot'. It's truly wonderful, so real, so well acted, both vocally and physically. And a certain poetry is there, too. Moving.

  • OK, this is the best-looking and best-sounding Cherubino ever.

  • She has such perfect breathe control and really does a superb job of playing a boy. She is the best Cherubino I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. She also does an excellent Carmen. What a beautiful voice!

  • im not looking forward to singing this....

  • A beautiful, passionate rendition. Kol hakavod!!!

  • maravilha!!!!!!

  • I saw that on stage!

  • Incredibly beautiful melody. I'd love to know what Mozart's inspirations were, what he was thinking when this came into his head. Sadly, we'll never have a clue. They dumped him in a mass grave. Assholes.

  • @sosome57

I've heard from my music professors that was the tradition from his village. It does seem like the worst sin to me to bury the greatest composer ever in a common grave.

  • What meter is this song in?

  • @TheComplaisantLover I want to see her version of 'Non so piu' too! It's my favorite part!

  • A wonderful performance!

  • FANTÁSTICOOOOO

  • She is wonderful and the old jazz song #66 is sung with her perfect English.

  • Never heard it sung better......

  • magnifico!

  • From 2:08 to the end she puts her mark on it and I like it very much, different in a very nice way. brava!

  • VERY NICE!

  • That guy sings like a woman! Very impressive.

  • @blogegog

If you know the story of this opera, you should know that Cherubino is a young boy in the story, but it's always a woman who sing this character... So that is the reason why you think the boy sings like a woman: it's a woman!

  • Haha what an idiot I am. I thought he was very effeminate, but had such a beautiful voice that I wanted to avoid mentioning it.

Thanks for the comment, air277. It made my day :). Too funny.

  • I think it's a testament to the costuming and makeup that she makes such a believable Cherubino!

  • lol i just though for a second whether im homosexual as found her attractive

  • Is that Miah Persson standing?

  • wonderful the two variations at the "ripresa"

  • Great as Cherubino!!!!! I love this performance!

  • which year

  • c'est magnifique!!!

  • she's kind of an attractive guy! lol

  • lol I know every in a whiel i see a production where im like "dam too bad charabino is played by a girl" :p

  • Muito bonito !!!

  • This is the perfect cherubino. Her stage presence, acting, expression and voice are truly inspirational. You can believe it's a real boy.

  • nothing short of amazing.

  • amazing eh?

  • Absolutley beautiful.

  • voce notevole, anche se forse un po' scura per il ruolo.

    ma a recitare è MERAVIGLIOSA!!!!

mai visto niente di simile...perfetta...in ogni gesto,in ogni espressione...sono attonita!

  • such a young woman and have such a beautiful voice

  • She has such a beautiful voice!!

  • Thanks for the vid.

  • Just LOVELY!

  • Oh my, I'm so relieved, I thought it was only me! Ahaha

  • Bravissima, indeed!

I loved Rinat's rendition! Such power and passion, deftly performed!

  • wish me luck! i have to sing this song in a recital tonight, and i have to do pretty much what he's doing, er, she's doing.

i really like this version. it helps a lot with the acting portion of the song.

  • Thanks for that- just found it - didn't realise the Countess was Dorthea Roeschmann!

  • Yes. Almost this entire "Nozze" film is uploaded to Youtube, including "Non so piu". :)

  • @mariacallus would you sent me the link of 'non so piu' with Rinat Shaham? please...

  • @mariacallus I can't find "non so piu". Help?

  • @oihanen look at carrangelo's download of that production (Mozart - Le Nozze di Figaro, part 2 (Pappano) [2006].) at 9:57 minutes. :)

  • @mariacallus Could you link us to the rest of the film, please?

  • Lovely voice, interpretation .. Bravo Rinat !

  • voi che sapete..mm....mm...mmm...mmmm..mmm

  • tremendous, out of the top draw. pure class. her boyish charm and half smiles make this one of the best. suspect her carmen is the finest, she is a real sex siren

  • Lovely voice & well played. I like her little half-smiles.

  • Piękne :)

  • Bravo lady!Какой голос..браво!!!

  • I adore this performance; watched it on a proper surround system with my granny the other day, and it was a truly beautiful experience.

  • This gave me goosebumps! Talk about being in the Zen.

  • Merveilleux morceau adapté à la flûte sur YOUTUBE : CASSIGNOL Jean

  • Amazing! She, the sultry sex siren transformed into a young Dudley Moore lookalike oozing boyish charm

  • Tears to my eyes

  • that was an amazing versian:) perfect! thankyou so much for the translation!

  • thank you for this translation ... now I know about what am I singing :)

  • Me encanta como canta y actúa. =)

  • her eyebrows are so adorable :D great performance, rini 4ever!!!

  • An amazingly beautiful interpretation! Just superb in every way - I love it! <3

  • I am astounded! A wonderful voice, great technique and the best acting I`ve seen,

    truly boyish. Brava!!!

  • What a beautiful interpretation!!

  • Isn't she brilliant is this part!? I love her singing, i love her acting, i love her costume, i love the scenography!!! And guess what: I love the production!!!!

  • Can we say "I LOVE IT!" She actually did ornamentation - something the conductor allowed her to do! Splendid! This is supposed to be Cherubino singing a little aria that he wrote especially to sing for the Countess...when I was learning this, my coach said, "of course you can ornament it, after all, you wrote it!" (meaning the character himself wrote it - so why not ornament it? It was in style, in taste)

  • This is like a relaxed Jennifer Larmore, the type of Cherubino I've wanted to hear in a long time! Very musical and very, very beautiful production of tone...the whole package!

  • Is this the same Rinat Shaham who sang with such a deep voice the song, "Route 66?" If so, what a range she has. Or which one is lip synced???

  • Yes, same singer, on both recordings (singing, with her own voice, just different style). Multi talented.

  • @tablloyd5 This is probably set higher than the song you heard her sing. But you can still hear a LOT of color in this rendition of this aria. If you compared this version with that of lighter lyric mezzo's, you would hear the difference, especially at the end of the descending lines...

  • @tablloyd5 Brava to the singer, beautiful color of voice, lovely technique. The addition of the ornaments served to further express Cherubino's emotional state and words; no small feat, as ornaments without a clear emotional purpose detract from the effect of an aria. And, it can be hard to sell ornaments, even if they are wonderfully written and executed, on a well-known piece, because people want to hear what they expected.

  • @tablloyd5 To top it all off, great acting, I only saw a hormonal, charming, teen boy. I can see why the Countess ended up carrying his child in the other book! Maria Ewing's commited acting comes to mind, and that is a great compliment!

  • stunning voice but too dark for Cherubino

  • Love it !!

  • This song is amazing. I came across it because of P&P, Lizzy sings it.

  • She`s the best Cherubino I`ve ever seen.

  • such a cute scene haha

  • lovely

  • Yay Shaham Family

  • she is wonderfull and she's from Israel.... respect!!! : )))

  • @sopran21 I love that she is from Israel!! Somehow she reminds me of Tamar, the main character of a novel by David Grossman.

  • C'est Manufique

  • Vey Nice

  • Awesome - Heir Mozart at his finest - Great performance

  • Definitely captured the boyish awkwardness.

  • so great. ! lovely aria.

  • Magnifique

  • lei e fantastica

  • I love cherubino. he's the best character, lol!

  • il faut juste se laisser emporter par cette musique.

  • cool !!!!!!!!!!

  • Gorgeous voice

  • Although this is a tiny bit too fast for my taste, it's still my favourite performance of this song. Rinat Shaham's facial expressions are amazing.

  • she looks abit like baldrick in that outfit but sings like a bird. bravo.

  • Ha ha - I have a cunning plan - I am going to sing like a bird to take my mind off turnips!

    Seriouly though, she is brill.

  • Rinat rocks

  • wasn't this the actress playing Cerubino 's first role or something?

  • It's not that much faster than it should be. The acting matches the aria very well!

  • im singing this song for voice lessons I LOVE IT!!

  • Who is conducting this ?

    This is much too fast.

  • It is barely above the accepted tempo... relax.

  • Lovely acting as well as singing.

  • Rinat Shaham makes such a cute Cherubino!

  • Rinat wow el mejor cherubino de la historia

  • I have seen this opera yesterday i the royal danish theater

  • Rinat is sexy and hot and has a lovely voice...all in one person...wow

  • Wonderful Artistry

  • And now, countertenors are beginning to do this role. Seems a little more fitting.

  • so just to confirm

    it;s a woman?

    she looks really good

  • i thonk this song was in shawshank

  • It was Sull'aria

  • But in olden times (Mozart's time) they used castrated men. Their voice never broke, with the result that they could sing soprano.

  • is that a girl or a guy who is singing?im so confused by the people below!!!

  • It's called a 'pants role' : a girl singing the part of a boy.

They strap the boobs down and give them a more masculine look.

  • oooh, thanks!now i know=)

  • I've been looking for a version of Le Nozze di Figaro on DVD for ages, but I haven't found one that drew me to it. I have David McVicar's production of Die Zauberflöte, which is superb, and was wondering whether this production is of the same standard? Can anyone help?

  • @elynjos I have this dvd and I love it!!! Yes I think it's at the same level as zauberflote. cherubino and susanna are AMAZING!!! btw where did you get the dvd of mcvicar's zauberflote???

  • Very beautifully sung and elegant phrasing. Brava!

  • absolutley wonderful! fantastic consonants and interpretation!!

  • So beautiful!

  • amazing interpretation. The low tones are wonderfully dark! thanks for posting, way to go Rinat!!

  • fantasticaly done! thanks for putting this up

  • this is so wonderful

  • Amazingly sung!

  • This performance is out on DVD this coming March 2008!

  • I will immediately buy one based solely on Ms. Shaham extraordinary performance and beautiful voice!! Thanks for letting us know. Do you think it will be available on Amazon? If not, do you know where? Thanks again.

  • beautiful....!

  • One of my favorite opera singers, if not my fave.

  • Let's see if I can express my opinion without creating ill feelings among the opera fans. I love opera. Still I would love to see these young male roles played by men such as Michael Miacini, Radu Marian or Vitas. ONLY ONCE, without the approval of Mozart. of course. LOL

  • OOPS: It is Michael Maniaci.

  • I really agree with you. I know that it is written for a mezzo (I'm one and have sung this myself), but I'd love to see a boy sing this just for fun.

  • it was not written for mezzo.. it was written for man that could sing soprano.. at least... this is what is written on my partiture of le nozze di figaro... :)

  • I'm sure it was written for a woman.

  • In fact the first Cherubino was Dorotea Bussani (also the first Despina).

  • Listen Teresa Berganza, Voi che sapete. :D

  • woooow...

    perfect :D

  • She's wonderful... a perfect Cherubino!

  • The talent makes the difference. She is the best Cherubino I ever saw! Amazing interpretation, kiding with the expected notes at the final... WOW! Do caralho!

  • Wow she is a good musician

  • Her voice and emotional acting is so amazing I can'stop watching it over and over again.

  • beautifully sung, beautifully acted :)

  • Whenever I fall in love, I listen to this song. The last time was only three weeks ago.

  • Brava... she is in a league of her own... And it is an original pants role. Those rolls (usually of bad boys or spoiled princes) were ment to be sung/played by mezzo Sopranos... Though there are a few instances where a contertenor (a male with a vocal range of a mezzo) plays these roles. It's ment as a comedic element.

  • i think SHE'S THE MAN;)

A lovely rendering of this aria!

  • No, you're very wrong. Those roles were written for women to begin with. In the times of Mozart roles for soprano and alto weren't written for men anymore. It was actually normal to have women sing boy's parts.
