The problem with the Massey video is its obviously been badly edited. Its obvious he played the shot a few times but the editor went with the shot where he didn't follow through as much. Which is where most of the points in this video comes from.
@gerv55 Because of the editing in Massey's video we don't know which part of each scene goes with what shot and as a result displaying a clear inconsistency in the methodology. The Oyster's point here is that consistency is the key and that the shot can be performed perfectly "without" dropping the elbow.
I have seen some really powerful draw shots in snooker without the cue bending.Could you please explain how those shots are made.See Neil Robertson's deep screw on the blue world championship 2010.
@Quickfireflame Just hold your cue level to the slate. Get it as parralell as possible. I play with a very level stroke. It was just natural for me to hit the ball like that from day one. Everyone strokes a little different, but on some shots you can not get your cue perfectly level cause of the rails. I never bend my shaft like in this video. I never bend my shaft in my follow through like this. Not saying its wrong, just saying that you do not have to elevate the cue to power draw.
With precision correct fundamentals. Returning the cue back to the original linear set position with an original +20 speed at impact with cue ball, beginning of sweet spot and +25 speed when tip releases from the tip at the end of the sweet spot.
MASSEY WOULD HAVE BETTER ANGLE FOR EASY ON THE SIX.good video,I played forever befor i could get monster draw.massey helped me. my buddys hate it when i use it to get position when none is there. many a nineball fell to the powerdrawshot.
@32KOAST Never said Mike was wrong. Was only pointing out that the shot CAN be done "without" dropping the elbow as Mr. Massey said "you must drop the elbow". Mike Massey is an amazing TRICK SHOT champion with a heart of gold.
Was that a 30 inch Z2 shaft or 29 what is better a 30 inch shaft or 29 inch shaft for overall playing does it make any difference i would like to buy a predator cue and i don't know which shaft to get i am between the p2 and p3 cues and 312-2 and z2 shaft , right now i play with a poison vx play cue 20oz. 29 inch shaft and i am looking to upgrade,
@future305 I use a 29" standard shaft. A 29" shaft will fit most people. If you have extra long arms you might need a 30", based on vertical placement of grip at set. Your choice of shaft should depend on your skill level. The Z2 shaft requires excellent stroke mechanics and fine tuned tip placements.
Yes the DVD's are available at my website click on "video" link on home page.
@thecardman No, he's simply stating you do not "have to drop the elbow" which Massey stated. In addition, this video also reveals some technique flaws in Massey videos how they were not exactly consistent every time.
You seem to be a bit of a stickler on technique...but you lifted your head and torso at least 3 inches at the moment of contact (2:46) which is not "correct." There are great players out there who have hitches in their strokes but play better than you. Quick example...Earl Strickland's wrist curls toward his body on his follow thru. My questions for you are; do you think these great players are wrong? If you were their coach would you try to fit them to your perfect mold? If so, why?
Thank you for the observation and comment. First, Mike's statement is "you have to drop the ELBOW" as is the purpose of my video. My head/torso raised up a bit so I didn't smash my chin. The elbow and stroke mechanics remained in perfect position which is the key. My class is over 40 hours and I explain in detail everything and more that you asked. Too much to go into here. Example: Jim Furyk is a top golfer with a big hitch. Not one golf school in the world teaches that technique.
@BilliardInstruction I see what you're saying now. You do not HAVE to drop the elbow, and i agree. I started out playing snooker at a young age and understand how important stroke mechanics are to cue power and accuracy. Thanks for the reply! :)
@BilliardInstruction If you look at a good golf swing, the head doesn't move. If you move your head in golf, you change your orientation and sacrifice accuracy. In pool, wouldn't it be better to just keep your head a little higher while you aim if it means that you didn't have to move your head during the stroke?
@colomblanco Yes the head should not move. Aiming and sighting are different. Sighting in the Cue Sports should parallel that of shooting a rifle, gun or arrow. The 6 point methodology is a sequential system of aiming which begins standing straight up, (DVD Volume 7). The higher your head the further away your catapult stop position is from the finish position of your stroke. Something has to stop the cue going forward. What is it? Hint: it is not the cue ball.
excellent video for newbies like me. I noticed that despite the difference between Oyster's and Massey's strokes both have optimized follow-through and the results are visible. after 2 weeks of intensly "programming" my arm i did this shot with a 60 bucks fury ;) thanks for the videos. now im starting to improve my break
How do you keep the pockets from being too bouncie. I read that your table is tripple shimmed. My GC2 is double shimmed and it makes some shots almost imposable.
I am not exactly sure what you mean "bouncie"? If the object ball goes through the center of the pocket line without touching the rails or points, there should be no difference in pocket size effect. Smaller pockets "i.e. triple shimmed" demands greater accuracy as the pocket openings are smaller. "Bouncie-ness" would refer to the rubber type, condition and tightness in the cloth.
One thing that I practice using the pendelum technique and locking my elbow is take an empty 20 ounce water bottle and lay it on the table. I take practice strokes to where I can make the tip of my cue go in and out (a little deeper than the ferrule) of the bottle opening without hitting it. Sounds weird but it improved the consistency of my stroke a lot. I agree with Massey's head being high in that shot. Head should be down with chin just about on the cue.
power draw is not hard. from my experience, just aim low, hit solidly, keep cue level, completely follow through when strike and draw the cue back really rapidly, and the draw will be magnificent. the draw CAN be down without bending cue like what is done in the vid.
the reason why Masseys stance is so high , is because he wants to get follow-through... but as we see Oyster do it as well without that kind off motion ... as one said here everybody are different but the question is who does it easier ? and again that is different to person to person ... i rather prefer NOT to drop elbow that much because i dont do it in every shot and consistency in shooting is very important in this game !
Mike's stance isn't high, his head is. This brings the shoulder up and finish position of a natural pendulum up too. The stop point is much further and higher. The arm needs something to stop it from going forward FAST and since the pendulum end stop is out of natural reach the scapula depresses (dropping the elbow). The head position has nothing to do with the function of the elbow joint. You can stand straight up and move your elbow joint the same range as if you were bent over.
Education is important with everything we do in life, even billiards. Pro golfers of today vs. 20 years ago is night and day different because of education and scientific training. Consistency is the key!
Yes, filming a sports motion instructional video where the result needs to match the movement, one should film with at least 2 cameras as I did.

How does the cue ball not get scooped up for a jump shot? Also will this shot work for cue sticks that do not bend?
