  • Also worth mentioning, SMB 2 can be unlocked in Super Mario Bros Dx for the GBC in form of Bonus Levels

  • So I have Super Mario All Stars, so is the Lost Levels thing the real SMB2?

I never knew about the remake thing, though I always found the vegetables stupid and would only play when my mom wanted to (she loves it 0_o)

  • @FeeltheAngst Yes, The Lost Levels is the "real" SMB2. It's an updated version of the Japanese original.

  • @phreakindee Thank you, I wasn't sure :) I never really played the lost levels, having more fun with SMB3, but I'll have to try it now (and give up after a few hours of maddening frustration, I bet)

  • @phreakindee Super Mario Brothers 3 is from 1992. Right?

  • Originally Doi Doi Panic was suppose to be a Mario game to begin with. In the prototype version, Miyamoto wanted to make a Mario game in which Mario could grab enemies. It wasn't until Fuji TV gave rights to Nintendo until Doki Doki Panic. The original game was suppose to be titled: Mario Madness and was to be a spin-off, not a sequel to the original series but Nintendo altered it to be Doki Doki Panic in Japan. When the game hit NA, it was made to be a sequel due to concern on the Lost Levels.

  • To heck with that 'real' Super Mario 2!! Give us the Doki Doki remix ANY day of the week!! We didn't know any different as kids and it was a POSITIVE (prolly 1of the few) examples of the saying 'ignorance is bliss'. THINK about it. Ok, you couldn't stomp the enemies and there were veggies & Wart as a villain. Well aren't NEW games/sequels SUPPOSE to give us NEW things?? Are picking veggies REALLY that much of a stretch from picking up MUSHROOMS which ARE veggies?? That "real" SM2 SUCKS balls!

  • it was a great game

  • Ok, Question. i first play Super Mario Bros1. when i was 5, back in the 90's, yes my dad kept it for me, same with the SEGA & PS1. anyway, i hacked my psp to play NES & SNES Games, i also got the SMB1 Hacked version for hard players. & SMB2 (the one you reviewed, look a like SMB1), & i got to say, SMB2. looks like SMB the lost levels on SNES. is almost the same as what i just watched, inbox me plz & we'll talk later.

  • Holy balls! You've got a Jazz Jackrabbit plush on ur shelf! xD

  • I remember playing Doki Doki Panic when I was young. Yeah, you play as Mario, but I always felt that it wasn't a real Mario game.

  • so, the lost levels game is actually SMB2?

  • @VietnamTom1955: Luigi is just as hard as Mario. You slide around SO MUCH.

  • the games awesome (jap sm2) luigi is my fav hes like an easy mode too!

  • The first time I came across this game was as a supplement on the Game Boy Color port of SMB, Super Mario Bros Deluxe, where it was called "SMB for Super Players". I sort of enjoyed having more Mario to play when I was a kid and SMBD is a great upgrade of the original game, but nowadays it feels like it was designed to be hard and not fun. I will always prefer the American version of SMB2, which is still a good game despite its history.

  • I had that game

  • Whats amazing is that Doki Doki Panic started out as Mario 2 but was rejected by Nintendo for being too different. Then Fuji TV needed a game, they got Doki Doki Panic, then we needed Mario 2 and since Gaming was a niche thing over here after the crash, and not a cultural phenomenon like in Japan, they didn't want to alienate the few gamers here with a very difficult game. Such a game aimed at pros would also mean a smaller profit margin for Nintendo, so we got this in lieu.

  • I ALMOST said "Hey, this is just Super Mario Bro's on the NES." In EVERY copy of Supper Mario Bros, it has ALWAYS been one player at a time. Luigi has ALWAYS skidded like that - well in all my versions with Duck Hunt on the Cart. The Spring Boards and Poison mushrooms.... I do not remember clearly. But I re-cant my niece saying "This has poison mushrooms."

So now my question is, did Doki Doki originally get shipping with some NES systems in U.S. It is not important, but I'll check into it

  • The Japanese underestimated the western gamers and they knew how pissed we're when we found out. lol

  • reason

    1: it was too hard

2: it was too much like 1 :P

  • Tell me about it. This game does not look so hard at all.

  • too hard for americans, huh? well heah i get that but they could've at least released it here in germany. naaaah just kidding we're just as stupud as you guys ;)

  • @fressfisch i do wish you guys got the 2nd startropics. regional lockout sucks for everyone.

  • ok. now I understand why this game is not known by everybody.

    However...

    what a cool video!!!

  • Despite The Western version of Mario 2 being nothing like the original i loved it as a kid, the colours are vibrant, jumping controls spot on and throwing stuff at enemies is fun.

There are some very annoying issues with the game though which are becoming more apparent as i get older.

  • I game genie that crap everytime! xD

    Kids don't do codes! O.o

  • Haha, you're terrible at this game.

  • Real super mario bros 2 (copy of doki doki panic) is always better than the lost levels!

  • MArio 1 is so easy it's boring.

This one is actually fun xD

  • By the way, the game designers typically dumb down American games to make them easier for us to play. Nintendo programmers- LISTEN UP DUDES- I LIKE hard games, but I don't like games that are made tedious for the sake of claiming that the game is harder. I don't mind needing to use my brain, but I despise games where I need to use a specific item (bomb, shovel, flute etc) on every inch of every single game screen to see if something will appear.

  • @Ant1Live Actually that's more exaggeration than truth. For example Konami tended to make their western ports harder in the 8-bit/16-bit eras. Contra 3 had a 30 man trick in Japan. In Japan Castlevania 1 had an easy mode and Castlevania 3 was much easier. Contra Hardcorps had a health meter removed from the western ports.

Many western games were toned down for Japan as well, such as Battletoads. Dragon Quest was made because Japanese gamers found western RPGs of the time too hard.

  • So many people hate (the American) Super Mario Brothers 2 but I think it gets a bad rap. It is a fantastic game, but it just isn't Mario. If you don't think of it as a Mario game (even though, obviously, the characters are edited in) then you just might enjoy it. I'd say the same thing for Zelda 2: a great game, but it just doesn't fit well in the Zelda series.

  • smb 2 (japan version) was released on famicom cartridge as super mario bros usa.

  • wasnt mario always half blue?

  • well... it may be too difficult for the typical gamer or something, but for many people in america and other countries, it wasn't that bad...

i am from the UK, i'm a massive gamer, i got my SNES as a present for christmas when i was 1 year old, so i've been playing games for as long as i can remember, but that's beside the point, i completed this game when i was about 13 years old, it was difficult, but i did it and i felt great satisfaction.

I do love japan, so maybe i'm japanese at heart lol

  • "I'm not a huge fan of games who make their goal to piss me off".........I love that quote and I also agree. I'm not a fan of games that go out of their way to try and get me to throw my controller at the TV either. lol

  • Japanese game designers on Hallucinogens???

  • Would rather play the lost levels despite the name and label ROM etc...

  • I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS COMIC BOOK STYLE CRAP AS A KID THINKING... wtf is this doki doki BS this aint SMB! Picking up veggies??? WTH??? Let's ROCK SOME KARNOV!!!

  • I HAVE A QUESTION PHEAKINDEE! if there exists an nes cartridge for super mario the lost levels, the reproduction one, then does tht mean that somewhere there exists an nes rom file for it then!? I NEED IT!! PLEASE RESPOND!

  • Ive played these levels on the Mario 2 version you say is actually Doki Doki

  • Well I didn't get to play it when it was brand spanking new because I was around 2 years old when the thing came out. I got the game system around 1987 so I can enjoy it. The graphics I enjoyed a lot.

  • i took the challange and played it and i koopa tipped on the first level yes its possible 2 ways to do until the timer hit 150 and i beat it. i died a couple of times but i did it and the game gave me 100000 points for every life i had left which made my score 99852450 oh and on castle levels i beat the king koopa fakes with fire balls and waited for the timer to reach zero and got 999x50 more points which equals 49950 almost maxed the crap out of that game and i get it it is really tough

  • I must say that I've come to enjoy Mario 1 & 2 more than Mario 3 for their unbridled creativity and arcade-style feel. The difficulty in Mario 2 never feels unfair in the slightest, especially compared to other NES games. It's very balanced, and with a little practice and critical thinking, gauging the jumps, bouncing off enemies, looking ahead, and finding items becomes natural and rewarding. It has unlimited continues, unlike Mario 1. Level 3-4 is one of the most brilliant puzzles.

  • Huh. You know, I actually like the American version of SMB2. The first time I played that was on the GBA game Super Mario Advance, and I'd already played the Japanese version of SMB2 on the GBC game Super Mario Bros Deluxe. I was called "Super Mario Bros for expert players" and for good reason. I've never made it past the fourth world to this day. So therefore, I've always enjoyed the American version more than the Japanese version.

  • I prefer SMB 2 USA over SMB 2 Japan.

  • lol to hard for americans?! ive been a platformer since i was 2 years old. i beat mario bros 1 when i was barely 3 years old. even if that game would have came out in american i would have pwned the fuck out of it. whats so hard about jumping on turtles and goombas? we can be ninjas too!

  • Comment removed

  • i liked the mario 2 american version probably not as good as the japanese version, but still good

  • hey i want to know how much it cost to get that done please return a message

  • @gtnathangardner All details are explained in the video, from the price to the website.

  • @gtnathangardner You can buy this on the Wii Virtual Console for $5.

And it's the original Japanese version.

  • thats looks like after effects not premeire lol

  • actually the "mario the lost levels" from mario all-stars IS the actual mario 2 game but as it is almost the same thing as the first one they wanted to do something different...

  • "Too hard for America"

    What the shit? Fucking racists.

  • @phreakindee Maybe I can clear this up. Super Mario Bros 2 was released not just as a sequel but as a masters challenge for fans of the Original Super Mario Bros, and it was one of the early titles on the Famicom Disc System in June of 1986. Doki Doki Panic was created for Fuji Television in 1987 for the Famicom Disk System as an advertisement for Fuji Television and the Yume Kojo festival.

  • @thatguyontheright1 Doki Doki Panic was retooled and had its engine upgraded for SMB2 because Nintendo feared the fan base would falter should the real SMB2 be released to the US due to the increase in difficulty. There was a mario game similar to Doki Doki Panic being worked on but that version had vertical scrolling levels and was to be an arcade exclusive and it was never released.

  • dude i love this game and dude u nder stand the words the lost levels level u never seen

  • By the time I beat this game, I was cursing in Japanese >.>

    Great fun, though. :)

  • dude your camera quality makes your video look so nostalgic. i love it

  • I actually like the american version of super mario bros 2

  • @thewakkydude What's your source for that story? Because it makes no sense for one huge reason: Doki Doki Panic wasn't even released until a year AFTER Mario 2 in Japan...

This is common-knowledge Nintendo history, according to Nintendo, game developers, and various journalists and authors.

  • Comment removed

  • @thewakkydude why didnt the company of doki doki sue??

  • @slapshot68 Because Fuji TV own it, and they were the ones who offered nintendo to reskin it.

  • @thewakkydude thats not true. mario 2 in japan was this game. doki doki panic was always meant to be doki doki panic. hence the reason the us verion of super mario 2 was called super mario usa in japan and theres a beta of super mario bros 2 that still has alot of doki doki panic leftovers in there so i have no idea where you heard this story but phreakindee has the correct story to go along with the game

  • @thewakkydude You don't know shit pal

  • @thewakkydude ...no comment...

  • why did they say this is difficult again?

  • for me it looks like super mario bros rom hack :)

  • Super Hardcore Mario

  • In Sweden we had the Japanese version of SMB 2.

Didn't even know of the "Doki doki" version until a couple of years ago.

Pretty cool to have that cartridge. :-)

  • SHY GUY IS IN DOKI DOKI PANIC!? SO HE'S NOT EVEN A MARIO CHARACTER!?!? i'm crushed...

  • @TheMewdude Yes, you have been duped.

  • @phreakindee So was Bob-omb but then he re-appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 WTF.

  • @TheMewdude awwww im sad now

  • @TheMewdude

    and Birdo

  • I like the smiling clouds. :) :)

  • The Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 looks great does anyone know where I can play it online or how I could download it? Please?

  • give me your download link

    PLEASE urgent!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The lost levels is just a re-hash with a different floor pattern. Our SMB2 was original, creative AND a bit of a challenge.

  • I have to confess, I kind of enjoyed SMB 2 (the American version). Maybe because I played it before SMB 3. I just figured they took the game in a slightly different direction. Plus it's cool how you could choose from four characters to play.

  • I once found a weird rom of a "beta" mario game. I don't know if it was a hack or a real game, but it was so hard I couldn't even pass 1-1!

  • Premiere rules.

  • This is the only mario platformer ive never played. And it's because I know just how angry I get at hard games.

  • Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) is apparently the hardest Mario game out there. I've TAS'd it so many times, I can't argue against this claim =_=

  • yeah! CANADA rulz!

  • I'm glad you didn't make out that you were the only one who knew the Super Mario Bros. 2 mix-up story. I hate it when people do that. :V

    Anyhow, very good review.

  • 2:40

    the fuck?

    a Jazz JackRabbit PLUSHIE?

I need one of those, seriously T-T

  • @Minority119 Hehe, yes there was a Jazz and Spaz plushie made as promotional items for Jazz Jackrabbit 2. You can still find them on eBay and the like, but they don't show up very often.

  • @phreakindee I don't have Ebay down here T-T

(I know it's an international service, but I don't have how to pay for it and stuff =P)

anyways, I really am enjoying your videos and reviews, bro, keep 'em up

  • @phreakindee i love jazz

  • Actually, a little Googling just informed me that after collecting 8 stars, pressing A + Start at the title screen takes to the "A-1" world! I just tried it and it works!

...and ohhh boy. This game just got even more tough! xD

  • @GETINTHECARITSALION Dude, that's awesome you've got the original and can try that out! I knew of the A-1 world, but had no idea of the stars system to achieve it. That seems pretty original, actually, and awesome regardless.

  • @GETINTHECARITSALION Worlds A-D on the original incarnation are where the game truly bears it's fangs. If you've beaten them on the snes allstars cart you haven't even come close to experiencing this games real level of pain.

  • I own my own Famicom Disk System and have this game. Definitely a very difficult game.

Since the Famicom Disks are, well, magnetic disks, many games feature some sort of saving. SMB2 doesn't let you save in the middle of the game, of course, but every time you beat the game a star is added next to the "Super" on the SMB2 logo and saved permanently to the disk.

I bought my copy of the game used as an import from Japan. My copy has 8 stars. How much free time do the Japanese have? D:

  • Super C is impossible...

  • I have a question, I have a famicom, the japanese nes, but I want to put it in a HD TV is that posible that? the graphics are better in HD TV's or the screen may look so ugly?

Sorry for my bad english, thanks

  • @Zelgadis020 Personally, I don't like how older systems look on most HDTVs. You end up with a grainy or pasty-looking image, it's not very nice. But you can certainly try it.

  • Aye nice review and also awesome reproduction cart.

  • hey...i remember this game...I beat it! The last castle and 2 or 3 of the cycling levels took me ages but....its awesome X D

  • good review, you actually used a video recorder and not the stupid point the camera at the screen

  • This game is hard with mario easyyyy with luigi.. the final level is on crack though.. cant die the entire level or you start at the beginning and yeah i remember when i got a backwards warp zone -.- sent me back to the start of the game and it sucked.

  • when I got my mario all stars copy I played the crap out of "the lost levels" and I beat that first.

    I love it.

  • @hobocamptheater Me too. It was the sole reason I got it. Brand new mario game with the other 3 I was familiar with with graphical and musical upgrades for the price of one!

  • NES REPRODUCTIONS GOT HAcKEDDD!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DO I DO NOW!

  • @penguinsnotincluded Hacked? According to whom? You can still email the guy, if you want. PM me if you want his addy.

  • @phreakindee his website got hacked

  • @penguinsnotincluded Just so you know, it appears to be working perfectly fine to me, just opened it up.

  • @phreakindee Luigi is badass. Way better to play as than mario. You just have to remember to allot yourself a little more space to land.

  • oh americans can handle it they were trppin

  • @MyNintendoGaming It's actually pretty easy if you've mastered the first game and have patience. The only levels that give me trouble are the hidden A - D worlds. In the original version those are 10 times harder than any other release.

  • lol you kept showing the same footage like jumping into the goombas on the staircase and getting beaten by a goomba as the 1-up appeared. Still (I'm sounding like you :P), this review has very good quality overall. There are too many camcorder reviews of this game that show up with a search.

  • @MrXman49O It's called "lazy" game reviews for a reason :)

  • If you play Cat Mario (Symbon action) This game is easy.

  • phreakindee, will you please please please please tell me how i can get this game

off of nesreproductions? can you tell me exactly what you did to get it just so

I can make sure it is not scam, please reply soon. thanks!

  • @hereliesmypride Heh, it's no scam, I had a very pleasant experience with him! Just follow the instructions he gives you on the page and in emails. I emailed him at the address he gave, he tells you what to do. Basically you'll tell him what game(s) you want, send a payment of $25 and ship a donor cartridge that matches the game you want. Then in about 3-4 weeks I got Mario 2 back in the mail, simple as that. He was very nice and professional about it.

  • @phreakindee Thank you for posting this I was looking at his site and I think I might ask him to make me some games thanks you again...

  • 1:14 夢工場 = 由美子嬢

    nice pronunciation wwwwwwwwwww

  • wait what was it called the website i want to copy and paste it i am lazy plz tell me what is it called

  • i want to play Japanese part 2 really fucking bad

  • @phreakindee Very nice review.

As a kid, I had Super Mario Brothers 1 and 2, and I really never knew the truth behind the second. Just amazes me.

The US Super Mario Brothers 2 may be some DokiDoki Panic remake, I think it has it's fun moments, but I'd also like the real SMB2 that the Japanese got.

I know it's on my Super Mario All Stars SNES cart, but I must say the NES/Famicom Japanese SMB2's graphics and style are just pure awesome.

I'd like to try to get the NES Repro like you did. =D

  • a challenge is always good

  • for the snes, Super Mario All-Stars was released and included mario bros. 1-3 and the lost levels(mario 2 in japan) with enhanced graphics and sound.

so if you wanted to review the game without emulation, you could have gotten super mario all-stars and with the ability to save in all the games.

  • @highwaysonyfan87 Did you even watch the video?

I brought this up rather early on, showed All-Stars and gave my reasons for wanting to play it on the NES rather than a remake. I prefer the original, not the SMWorld-like retextured SNES version. "Enhanced" is a misnomer.

  • @phreakindee Well thanks to the Wii Virtual Console we all can play the original SMB2 (under its Lost Level name on the download page) which is much harder then the dumb down one on All-Stars plus thank to Retrozone (RetroUSB.com) you can use an actual NES controller using their Wii NES Retroport (a NES controller to Gamecube adapter) that fits into the Wii's Gamecube port 1 to use your Nintendo brand NES controllers and it sells for $16 and they make a SNES one too I say buy one.

  • What is a doner game

  • @TheCoolman209 A donor game is a cartridge of a game that is going to become the reproduction cartridge. For this one, I sent the guy a copy of Bill Elliot's NASCAR for the NES, and he turned it into a SMB2j cartridge.

  • lol I have both on my Wii! And Yeah It's called the lost levels but the title says SMB:2 I was thinking, "What the heck Nintendo? You went and released SMB 2 in Japan and gave us a different game here?!?!?" But both games are actually really good aside from the awkwardness SMB2USA had...

  • ahh...i loved this game.

stayed up for 2 days straight and beat it.

    (without world 9) :P

  • @mariobro890 =l ok then it took me an afternoon but alright

  • you can also play this game on Super mario bros dx for the game boy color.

  • i like the american smb 2 but this is still awesome

  • Well, Doki Doki did introduce Shy Guy and Bomb-omb enemies. So that was good.

  • THIS VIDEO WAS UPLODED ON MY BIRTHDAY LOL

  • wow, the sound on that sounds more accurate than the VC version.

  • @xeemo Considering this was played on a real NES that's not too surprising!

  • I just love this game. I've beaten it once in Mario All-Stars, my next goal is to beat the original. I really like Luigi's physics in this game and I wish they had retained that difference between Mario and Luigi in future games... too bad they didn't. :(

  • @onpon4 What about Super Mario galaxy 1 and 2? Luigi jumps higher and is more "slippery" than Mario.

  • ive played this on SNES! looked way better than the NES one...

  • I'm happy they kept Birdo, Shy Guy, and the SMB2 (aka Doki Doki Panic) main theme for the rest of Mario's life.

  • Could've sworn the poison mushroom was in the first one too.. Not that I know any better. :L

  • Ugh, this game is a nightmare to me! I don't think I'll ever get past 7-2!

  • i suppose bowser wanted to step it up a bit...

  • Great review and awesome on the nesrepoduction headsup. I'm gonna get myself that for my birthday.

  • this glame big flog pleb

  • you make great reviews, i wish they had released this in the U.S.

  • I was quite happy to be able to finally have an original version of the game on the VC, which even has suspension states. You can't get that from the original systems. All you get are "continues" from the start of the world you were currently on. The game is good, but not great. It is like a first rom hack. lol

  • ... Super C, hard?

    Really?

  • I have the game on Wii. It's downloadable.

  • I got it on my All stars for Snes. Fun game but a hard mother fucker.

  • awesome review!

Can you review Shadowrun on the genesis ?...happens to be one of my all time favourite games

  • @DjSvenzo You know I've actually never played that one. I'll keep in mind, thanks for the suggestion!

  • Fun Fact: Did you know that in Japan, SMB 2 (US ver.) was released there a with the title "Super Mario USA"...They're mocking us. But you probably knew that...

  • @IAMPICTUREMAN I don't think so. That Doki-Doki Panic game was only given out as a special at a trade show one year. It was never given a proper releace from what I hear. So it's reasonable to assume that not heeps of people in Japan would have played it.

  • @IAMPICTUREMAN Yeah, that is pretty funny that they named the game like that in Japan.

  • i was looking for a new review from u for soooooooo long! what took you so long!

    great video!

from now on...1 or 2 new videos a week

  • @ufoafterlight Haha, what took me so long?? Appreciate the enthusiasm, but are you subbed to my channel? I update with a new review every weekend for almost a year straight now

  • the japanese have the coolest names

  • i so fucking love your intro haha.

  • i totally agree with you

  • Great review man!

But no offence, you're pretty bad at it :P

  • IMO I don't think the difficulty was why it wasn't released in the US... Japan hates America and gave us Doki Doki Panic - kept the REAL SMB2 for themselves. That's what I think.

Also, I'm surprised in your video you never make it past stage 2- IIRC the difficult levels aren't until the 8- level or so.

  • it does not look THAT hard..

  • I was so excited when I actually beat SMB: The Lost Levels on the Super NES. That version is hard, and from what I understand the original FDS version is harder. BTW, I like the US version of SMB2 very much.

  • I always hated Mario 2/Doki Doki Panic. I loved Mario 3 so much that I felt that Doki Doki panic just felt...weird. I guess there is a reason for that, but either way I never liked it.

  • I have to say, the American Mario 2 was probably my favourite Mario game. If only because the controls were a lot tighter. I found the controls in 1 and 3 to be too slippery. Mario just took too long to stop considering how slow he moves.
