Usually, you hear one blues remake, you've heard 'em all. And I've heard scores of talentless, drunken musicians (for lack of a better term) meander aimlessly thru these songs at clubs and bars. BUT...this is the complete opposite! Marshall Tucker Band tear it up. This is bad assss! I heard this a lot growing up in the 70's and it sounds so much better today! Thanx for the post.
Lost in all the musical genius and star studded thrill of this song are the amazing vocals of Doug Gray. Truly one of the under appreciated (at least in other genres of music) voices ever, but at the same time one of the absolute best. All joined together, we get the magic that is this song at the Volunteer Jam.
Toy Caldwell and Richard Betts and Charlie Daniels standing in a 7 foot circle in 75...Could they have known the impact they would have on music...all music.
Maybelle22, thanks for the info about the DVD & yes, I just looked it up on Amazon in the UK & it is available! The main title on the cover says Volunteer Jam - Charlie Daniels Band, but when you look closer, it is the Murfreesboro 75 show & the MTB are all on there. Could be an early birthday present (April) to myself, I reckon!
I still have the vinyl version of this LP from Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1975 & what is it the announcer says, something like, "we're going to carry on with the Volunteer Jam with the whole damn Marshall Tucker Band". Great LP, love this track, plus Dicky Betts & Co doing Sweet Mama. Is it available on CD, this album? If not, thanks for posting this.
@MrDavidrobinS I still have the vinyl somewhere, too... but I also found the DVD of the show at Walmart a couple of years ago. Don't know if they still sell it, but you could probably order it online from somewhere if they don't.
awesome performance Chuck Leavell, Charlie Daniels, Jimmie Hall, Dickey Betts, Sounds like a helluva line of guest performers. The song is sizzlin hot. Only Marshall Tucker could pull this off. What a blessing it is to hear them jam.
This performance is available on DVD...Volunteer Jam 1. It's as cheap as $4.95 shipped on ebay. I just ordered one. 24 Hours At A Time is on the same DVD.
Man, Doug Gray is one of the best vocalists to EVER grace a rock and roll stage. Jagger? phhfft.Clapton? Naw. Plant is very good, but I think Doug is as good as they come. Smooth, soulful and strong, and a heckuva range too.
They never were as tight as Skynard or as spontaneous as the Almann Bros. but they are one of the foundations of Southern Rock and one of the greatest Live bands to ever take the stage.
Toy was the best but this set does him no real justice. Check out some other videos to really appreciate his talent.
1976 I'm pretty sure. had it on cassette boot for years recorded it off the radio.Chuck Levell on the keys.Tom Douchette harp. Charlie was/is no slouch on gitbox himself.

ABBFANFUKN4LIFE: The DVD says that this was taped in l975. Unfortunately, I didn't discover it till about 1980 or so. I see I got a few "thumbs down". Didn't mean to offend anyone.
No offense taken. You just gotta know your music. I like that a yankee girl loves this music. All that counts is that we have these videos so people can enjoy them. I was lucky enough to have grown up a teenager in the
70's. So I saw all the greats live MTB, SKYNYRD & ABB (still going strong today)
I see these videos and what memories of better times.
May be Doug's best piece ever, but on his best day, he couldn't hold a candle to Jimmy Hall. Jimmy is on stage there playin' that harp but could easy have teamed with Toy Caldwell to really light up the vocals on this. Just an opinion - and a mater of taste, I guess.

Actually...it was more like twenty-six years ago. Wish you hadn't cut off the end of it, but, hey...tellittothedevil...gotta give you your props. That's always been one of my favorite pieces of music...How fu**ing great WAS THIS?
It's early 70's. C'mon 26yrs would make that 1982. Just look how young Toy is not to mention Dickey. Plus in the early 80's is when Toy was sportin a beard.

This is probably the most intense, delicious piece of music EVER. Damn...there's that exquisite SPIRITUAL orgasm!!!
Talk about a GUITAR ARMY!! Charlie, TOY, and Mr. Betts!! Its Great to Finally see this soundtrack. I have been listening to it since 1978?? or so...Thanks to whoever posted it. Jim
I have a recording of this on vinyl and have not listened to it in over 20 years. What a treat it is to get a visual. I've been hoping the old Volunteer Jams would get released on DVD someday, so thanks very much for the memories.
This might have been one of the last times Chuck Leavell and Dickie played together. Wow, Jimmy Hall too. Toy's sound and skill really stands out even compared to the great Richard Betts. What a jammin' superstar.
i had this on the album forever (stolen) -- so glad it's HERE!! one of my favorite performances of ANY SONG of all time!!!

@jmrfloyd1 Eubanks was busy on sax on this one. No flute needed. With Jimmy Hall on harp and the keyboards and guitars, who had room for the flute?

Yeah, that's Jimmie Hall from Wet Willie and the year was 1975. It was the very first (annual) CDB Volunteer Jam.
Great stuff, all of it from that recording. I have to get the DVD, I had the album years ago but it's long gone now.
