thank you for the reply, I have taken a screen shot of the questions so I don't lose them. I haven't had time to check the loft/attic above yet mainly because of all the junk =) but all in all very good/useful tips, Thanks, also when it's all done I will post a reply video showing my progress.
Good, I like that you share this video, I wish success always Secret Passage Behind A Custom Built In Bookshelf built by Master Craftsman Ben Phillips
I see you comment/reply a lot to people so here goes, I have a bedroom that I'm converting into a cinema room and moving my bed into the spare room, the spare room has a wall that joins onto my cinema room and I was wanting a bookshelf door like this.
there isn't a doorframe/door there so I'll be removing part of the wall, I could use a little help, 1. how do I make sure it's not a "supporting wall" 2. how do I hide the hinges? and 3. I want to "pull a book" and it's attached to a pulley system
@666music666 Those are some excellent points/questions.
1.) A load bearing wall or supporting wall distributes the weight of the area above. So, what's above those two rooms? Can you access the area to inspect the space? If you can, then you are going to look for the joist to run parrallel to the wall that you want to break through. If the joist are running perpendicular then chances are the wall is carrying the load of the joist. Let me know if this helps.
2.) The hinges that I use is a piano hinge and can carry a fair amount of weight but be weary in your shelf size, as they get heavy fast. Check the weight allowance on the hinge that you use and do some math to figure the weight of the shelf. Typically a 4x8x.75 sheet of plywood is @50#'s.
The hinges themselves will be hidden inside of the opening on the back pivot point of your cabinet.
3.) Use a gate latch to secure the cabinet/hidden door to the wall on the opposite side of the hinges. There should be an area that has a predilled hole for an attachment or cable. You might have to drill a hole in the strike or catch. Attach the cable's other end to your book. A little trial and error will help you with the length of cable you will need.
@TomKaren1994 - wood is a material that shrinks and swells with the relative humidity and the temperature. by using a caulk, it allows the wood a space to grow and shrink without causing damage to piece.
Sweet, opening to the inside makes hiding hinges better. I'm trying to figure out the locking mechanism, that's Stealth... I give this project a 10. Good job boss.
@sbv5220 I use a piano hinge that is available at most home improvement centers. try using the longest hinge that they have available for your projects.
I want a hidden bookshelf too! Don't know if anyone can build 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5.... in my house! Wahhhaaa I wish I knew how to be a crafts person!
I would love to have one of these in my future house and never tell my kids about it...then when they are like 20 be like: Hey kids, your childhood home you grow up in? yeah, it has a secret room *click*
Im sure the look on their face will be worth the 20 year wait :)

Great idea putting the hinges on the rear of the unit. This allows it to rotate AWAY from the front trim.I was wondering how to do mine. Thanks
