them z drives are nice, but i spent most of my time on single screws....worked on a tug that had a riveted hull,built in 1919,and she may of been slow, but she was comfortable.
ACtually steer a z drive freely is really easy. The best has to come during manouvering... what about passing the towline bow to bow, or going pushing on vessel's bow while she is making her way at 4/4 knots...

the main tugboat here at Portland Harbor is named Andrew Mcallister. It was built in 2008 and also features Z-Drive and can do the same things

Love those z-drives. I live in San Francisco and spend a lot of time at the docks watching the Crowley and Delta tugs at work.
