RIP Jim McKay. Jim McKay was GOD to sports television. He did both Winter and Summer Olympics, golf telecasts, Wide World of Sports, and the Indianapolis 500. Most importantly, he said these somber words about the fallen Israeli athletes at 1972 Summer Games in Munich, "There all gone." It demonstrates that terrorism then is all too great. McKay had class. God rest his soul
34 years ago today may 29th and on a day of probably the most bizarre finish in any major motor race ever, this one turned out just the way i wanted, with AJ being my fav. driver, although he needed some bizarness too,to claim victory from certain defeat. I even remember this day as a 19 year old flying around sunday afternoon with my 1976 camaro z28 trying to impress the girls planning to get home just in time. I remember how happy i was that night, just like now. Thanks for the great memories.
I just want to say this is insanely great. I just discovered this video and what memories it brings back. Incredeble, the original abc edited version. Its monday night now and i will not watch this. I will wait until sunday night 8pm et. and pretend its the GREAT YEAR OF 1977 and watch this CLASSIC in total bliss. What a great week of antisipation i am going to have. I cannot possibly thank you enough. Will have more to say sunday night when its 1977 all over again. I will be playing 77 music AW.
Most definitely. He won 5 GP races and had alot of podiums. He raced until 1980 when his car slammed to a stalled car and then a barrier, he was paralyzed from the accident.
Great video! The only real flaw (old tape is old tape...it's always too brittle) was Jackie Stewart's contention that Roger Penske invented the onboard hydraulic jack system used by Indy cars. The earliest example of this invention being used that I can recall was utilized by Leader Card Racers during the Roadster era at Indy in 1959. A.J. Watson was their brilliant head mechanic and car builder ,so it wouldn't surprise me if he actually invented them.
This was my first 500 i went to at 13 years ols. Thanks for posting this. Awesome. I was sitting about 3/4 of the way up on turn 4 with my Dad. We could see all the way down the straightaway. I remember when Janet Guthrie went around all the ladies would stand and yell. I lived right off of 30th st behind turn 4. It was awesome growing up in Indy!!!
Jesus... I probably watched this sitting on the shag carpet in front of the Admiral 19 inch console TV... this would have been when they delayed the race for showing at prime time, also.
@racermac1988 Well, it must've not lasted long, because by 1980 it was gone. Can anybody tell me exactly how long ABC used the "MNF" theme for the Indy 500?
Could never had enjoyed this if not for you uploading!! Year of my Birth! Go Gomer!!

There's only one way to spell racing at Indy....and that's F-O-Y-T!
My hand still cramps up when I think about it........ A.J. Foyt Jr....Indianapolis 500 Winner: 1961, 1964, 1967, 1977.

Huh. Jackie Stewart drove A.J.'s car for the track look (or whatever you call it; I forget at the moment). That would turn out to be a omen..........

Wasn't Clay Regazzoni a F1 driver? And if so, did he win any races in F1 or even Podium?

As far as I know this is the oldest "home recorded" Indy 500 to surface to date...not counting the re-air of 1971.
