That's very true: i.e. if you looked at Arnold compared to other guys, you realize that his main advantage wasn't better physique, but his ability to SHOW it better.
He had some better proportions, but mainly it was his PRESENTATION.
Doctors prescribed steroids for Arnold, because doctors were allowed to do that in the 70's; but now they don't; so naturally bodybuilders take much larger doses.

Arnold: best balance of musculature. Arnold: better biceps and chest. If he competed today with newer science and supplements he'd be freakier than Ronnie. Luckily he competed when he did and got as big as you can without being grotesque. He had weak points like back thighs abs compared to today. @kobesdad2000 arnold is the greastest but his shape at the competition in '81 was controversial. the audience was cat-calling him when the jury decision was anounced. and even years after the community argued over the legitimacy of his last title. he showed up in the last second to sign for the comp and did it so to say as sort of promotion for his upcoming movie "conan the barbarian". to many it was obvious the persons in authority were prepossessed for him and paved the way for his victory.
@zerobos It was in 1980. Franco won in 1981. Point is Coleman competed until he was in his 40's and for intent and purpose Arnold retired at 27. If he had not become such a huge star he would have continued to dominate. I am not an Arnold homer. My favorite of all time is Lou Ferrigno. I will say foe what ever reason the Mr. Olympia contest seems to be a run of consecutive champions. Arnold, Haney, Coleman. all won 6 or more and a lot of guys won 2 or 3.

Back in the day (65 - 85) it was not just about mass, but symmetry. Arnold put together the best physique in the history of the world. Ronnie was twice as massive, but very unattractive. The shot with both of them hitting a front-double-biceps pose says it all. Arnold looks perfectly proportioned and Ronnie looks like a circus freak. Different eras I suppose. If Ronnie competed in 75 he would have looked too odd to the judges to win and Arnold would not be considered massive enough today.
In Arnold's time they also didnt have that injectible muscle oil so many guys today use to add size to their muscles. Could pretty much say Arnold was a product of his regimen and the juice. Seeing the two together Ronnie does have more mass but Arnold essentially has picture-perfect proportions.
Too bad both were roid junkies just like the rest of the field has always been :P

Yes, it is my opinion. I don't really care if more people agree with you than me - that's not much of an argument against my points or validation for your opinion. I think most people's opinion of Arnold over Ronnie even in the field of proportions etc. is due to the bias of them already liking him more just for his smaller size. Look at Arnold's pecs at 0:11, then go back to looking at hid delts at 0:01. Those are not good proportions. And while I'm at it, pause at 0:01 to see Arnold had an underdeveloped posterior head of his delts. Pause at 1:00. Arnold's legs may be cut and defined, but their mass does not match his upper body. He is top-heavy. The bicep;tricep imbalance is harder to demonstrate in this video due to him not really showing his relaxed arm at a side-view, but (continued in next comment)
but search Arnold up on google images and you can find pictures of his arm like that. You can see his biceps were massive, but he, to some degree, neglected his triceps. You can find countless videos of Arnold training biceps, talking about the pump in his biceps, adding another inch onto his arms in the bicep pose, etc. But you don't find anything like that with his triceps. Find his biceps in a relaxed, normal pose and from a side view and you will see they don't quite look right compared to pretty much all other bodybuilders' arms in the same relaxed pose from a side view.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion. all im saying is the guys today ruined the sport of bodybuilding. arnold retired at age 28 and ronnie coleman won his first title at age 34. if arnold had stayed in the sport there is no saying how many titles he could have won. arnold looked just as big in my opinion anyway if you take a away that nasty gut and out of proportion thighs. ronnie clearly abuses steroids and gh. arnold looked way more natural.

@nevawrong So Wrong Arnold would have won at least 3 more. He retired undefeated then came back 3 years later and won again. He quit the first time at 27 years old. Won again at 30 but became a huge star so stopped competing. Tho size Matters but proportions do as well. If it was just size Lou Ferrigno woulda won everytime he was bigger than both

@kobesdad2000 arnold is the greastest but his shape at the competition in '81 was controversial. the audience was cat-calling him when the jury decision was anounced. and even years after the community argued over the legitimacy of his last title. he showed up in the last second to sign for the comp and did it so to say as sort of promotion for his upcoming movie "conan the barbarian". to many it was obvious the persons in authority were prepossessed for him and paved the way for his victory.

@zerobos It was in 1980. Franco won in 1981. Point is Coleman competed until he was in his 40's and for intent and purpose Arnold retired at 27. If he had not become such a huge star he would have continued to dominate. I am not an Arnold homer. My favorite of all time is Lou Ferrigno. I will say foe what ever reason the Mr. Olympia contest seems to be a run of consecutive champions. Arnold, Haney, Coleman. all won 6 or more and a lot of guys won 2 or 3.

I just believe it wasn't fair to the others who worked their asses off to win back then. But on the other hand who could blame him for using his good relations or at least appreciating his favourers gift?

Back in the day (65 - 85) it was not just about mass, but symmetry. Arnold put together the best physique in the history of the world. Ronnie was twice as massive, but very unattractive. The shot with both of them hitting a front-double-biceps pose says it all. Arnold looks perfectly proportioned and Ronnie looks like a circus freak. Different eras I suppose. If Ronnie competed in 75 he would have looked too odd to the judges to win and Arnold would not be considered massive enough today.

In Arnold's time they also didnt have that injectible muscle oil so many guys today use to add size to their muscles. Could pretty much say Arnold was a product of his regimen and the juice. Seeing the two together Ronnie does have more mass but Arnold essentially has picture-perfect proportions.
Too bad both were roid junkies just like the rest of the field has always been :P

Please, stop comparing their bodies when they are 30years off eachother. Coleman got ALOT more technology in all kind of accessories to help him develope. Today you should look gross and big, in Arnolds day nearly all bodybuilder had that shape. So saying that arnold got more less delts or lats is just stupid. I count that all of you got a brain and can figure out that its just plain stupid to compare. And personally i would rather look like arnold than coleman.

I think Arnold looks great, but ronnie was, IMO the better bodybuilder. Ronnie, despite initially coming off as a huge freak of muscles, is more proportional than arnold. Arnold had small delts, an overdeveloped chest compared to the rest of him, a bicep;tricep imbalance, and small legs (at times the legs were in proportion though.) only thing about ronnie is the GH gut, but that's not really what we're arguing about.

Ronnie may be too big for your taste, but if you took the time to break Ronnie and Arnold's physiques down, you would find Ronnie to be more proportional. Again, Arnold had small delts, an overdeveloped chest compared to the rest of him, a bicep;tricep imbalance, and small legs (legs were better towards end of his bodybuilding career though).

Yes, it is my opinion. I don't really care if more people agree with you than me - that's not much of an argument against my points or validation for your opinion. I think most people's opinion of Arnold over Ronnie even in the field of proportions etc. is due to the bias of them already liking him more just for his smaller size. But that's not what we're arguing about.

Look at Arnold's pecs at 0:11, then go back to looking at hid delts at 0:01. Those are not good proportions. And while I'm at it, pause at 0:01 to see Arnold had an underdeveloped posterior head of his delts. Pause at 1:00. Arnold's legs may be cut and defined, but their mass does not match his upper body. He is top-heavy. The bicep;tricep imbalance is harder to demonstrate in this video due to him not really showing his relaxed arm at a side-view, but (continued in next comment)

but search Arnold up on google images and you can find pictures of his arm like that. You can see his biceps were massive, but he, to some degree, neglected his triceps. You can find countless videos of Arnold training biceps, talking about the pump in his biceps, adding another inch onto his arms in the bicep pose, etc. But you don't find anything like that with his triceps. Find his biceps in a relaxed, normal pose and from a side view and you will see they don't quite look right compared to pretty much all other bodybuilders' arms in the same relaxed pose from a side view.

The bodies of the 70's body builders were works of art, the bodies of todays champs are just masses of flesh. and also, as Greg Valentino (the man with the 28 inch arms) said, "do you think girls like this?" no, no one does, its gross. i wish bodybuilding could go back to arnold's time...

Guys you can't compare ronnies and arrnolds roid usage. Arnold used his only a few weeks out to maintain his muscle, never to add size but to maintain in cutting.ronnie cycled on and off hgh, roids, probable prohormones when they were easier to get, all year, he was a great of the sport as well.but you simply can't compare these two.its like comparing pigs and chickens.
