Moths smell things with their feet so it was even funnier to me because when I heard he went to a podiatrist I thought the punchline was going to be the moth complaining that his feet smell.
@Rawrrrrrzislove The humor is in the obnoxiousness in the length of the joke. Even greater is the build up, which Norm does superbly here. It's a similar concept as The Aristocrats joke.
CHECK OUT MY NEW VIDEO WHERE I TALK ABOUT BRANDON ROY RETIRING. I ALSO TALK ABOUT THE TRANSACTIONS GOIN ON THIS UPCOMING SEASON. GO TAKE A LOOK LEAVE A COMMENT AND ADD ME!! I ALSO RAP AND HAVE A NEW SONG "LIFE OF MINE" AND A HILARIOUS VIDEO CALLED "FAKERRR DEN A BOOTY POP" HAHAHA THANKS
Norm posted on twitter: According to Einstein's postulate, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Then why do I reawake?
Can someone explain exactly what Norm is talking about, like where is he coming from on that?
Only Norm Mcdonald could make that joke funny. It's his way of saying things, that nasal monotone voice, the color and imagery that he puts in and impeccable timing.
I've seen a lot of comics live in my life, Norm Mcdonald was probably the best single mic performance I've ever had the pleasure to see. He takes his audience on these wonderful visual comic-scapes of imagery. He's one of my all time favorite comics; right up there with Hicks, Hedberg, Kinison etc.
in general are what actually make the joke amusing. The reason Conan is laughing is not because of the joke itself, which is particularly unfunny, but the way Norm says it. Its not about anti-comedy; its about brilliant delivery. This is the same reason why comedians like Dave Chappelle and Mitch Hedberg are hilarious. For an example of the best delivery possible by a comedic actor, look no further than Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
The reason this kind of humor works is not because of it being a long, drawn out joke or him succeeding at anti-comedy. Its because of his delivery. The joke itself (anti-comedy) isn't very funny and any other comedian attempting it would fail. This is where the brilliance, intended or not, of Norm can be seen. The way in which he delivers the joke: the slow cadence, botched pronunciation, strange mannerisms and of course, just hilarious voice
That was not as funny as I expected it to be. Way too much build-up for a relatively weak ending. I mean, the bulk of the joke isn't funny either, and what should be punchline is in fact a real letdown.
@lehtinen21 So, was I supposed to laugh? Was this supposed to be some sort of philosophical lesson on society's views of humor? A parody is usually humorous.
@facecycle I thought jokes were supposed to be funny. No comic has ever been successful on the basis of long, drawn-out "jokes" that have horrible punchlines, just because that's the joke. Since when is being unfunny funny?
@facecycle I've seen anti-comedy (or heard anti-jokes) before, and they can actually be funny, in their own horrible way. For example, why did the little girl fall off her bike? Because she had no arms. Knock knock! Who's there? Not the little girl.
Anyhow, I long until the day when anti-comedians become successful. Norm's anti-joke, while it probably succeeded in its purpose, was just disappointing to anyone who listened to him drag it out for four minutes. Overall, I'm sorry I watched it.
His delivery was funny as hell, As well as the context (of the chemistry between him and Conan and him 'wasting' Conan's time). A far better somewhat similar joke is him telling the Andy Richter the Swedish German joke. That joke is similar in that it's very long but the punch line and context is way funnier (it's not an anti joke).
@MCGeest Thanks, that was great. Quite a bit funnier than the moth joke. I've seen other interviews with Norm, and I like him, I just didn't enjoy the moth joke.
Some of you are friggin' idots. How do you not get the humor in this? I mean I get the whole 'different strokes for different folks' thing but some of you don't even understand what he's doing..
He could have told that joke in 15 seconds but he didn't. It's sort of a parody of people who tell a really long joke and think they are funny and that shit.
It is all about the way that you feel when you are living in the dark and can't seem to find your way into the light. It is like you are swimming upstream in a stream of molasses. You struggle to get every inch and keep thinking 'is it worth it? is it really worth it? Perhaps I should just let myself die since life is shit anyway" I remember being a boy and feeling this way, but i found the will to make it thats why it is funny.
@ThieleM OOOhhhh.. Thank you thank you!!! I'm always the last one to understand these types of jokes, which is odd because I'm the most analytical person I know out of all my peers.
Norm MacDonald is the worst comedian ever. He has never said a single funny thing EVER. How does this shitbag have his own show? No wonder why he's not on SNL anymore. Nobody laughed at any of his jokes on the roast of Bob Saget. Not funny at all
Am I missing something here? I know that moths go towards lights. So there was a light on at the podiatrist's office? Was that the joke? Not trying to be sarcastic or anything just want to make sure I didn't miss anything :(
@Airbag360 The joke is that the joke could have taken 10 seconds to tell, but the way he elongated it just for the sake of it made the simple and ultimately lame joke a real good one.
he strings the joke out with a really depressing series of details... basically the exact opposite of funny. Then he ends the joke with a really corny punchline. It's funny on many different levels
@Airbag360 Imagine the cab driver just going "Moth walks into a doctor's office. Doc asks "what brings you here?" Moth says "oh, I came in cuz the light was on."" Then Norm tells the same joke... with his own twist to it... and a few minutes of bonus material... He made it gold.
this is a bold statement, but I'd rather have Norm there every night over Andy Richter. I love Andy and I think he's hilarious, but Norm is just so outrageously funny that I wouldn't mind it at all if it was him there every night.
