  • Hey i was hoping to get a b/w one what kind of cage or enclosure do you recommend or how big

  • nice tegus man. Im hoping to get a black and gold eventually but Im gonna get used to some smaller lizards first. Im getting a leopard gecko pretty soon! Im very exited about it ^^

  • Would you recommend tegus as a beginner reptile? If not, what would you recommend?

  • @Gravios666 NO, NO, NO!!!! Not at all!! Gecko species, Bearded Dragons, MUCH better!!!

  • @Gravios666 I think it depends. If you have had experience with reptiles (volunteering at exotic pet shops, zoos, helping out friends, etc.) then it isnt THAT awful as a choice. Personally I say just get a Bearded Dragon first and if that works out, try getting more experience with tegus. Possibly going to a breeder or a zoo. Try seeing the complexity of caring for them. Then see if its right for you. Just make sure to do a few MONTHS of research at the minimum....

  • he i have a columbian b/w tegu and i have him in a glass cage that opens from the top. well at my moms i bought a cage for him so i can take him back and forth. but this cage is a sliding front cage and wood on all other sides. but he hates this cage. normally hes clm but in this cage he bites and runs and wont let me pick him up. i was wonderin if you could tell me what wrong and what i should do..ive had the cage for about a 2 months.

  • @ffllyyiinnggppiigg New cage, new environment he needs time to get used to it. How are you approaching him. He may be seeing you as a threat! Columbians are known for taking longer to build trust with compared to Argentines.

  • Your red tegu weighs more than my cat. That is AWESOME.

  • How much do bites hurt?

  • @TheRavenAndTheCoyote Adult tegu bites can break fingers! Their teeth are made to rip into flesh, so bites hurt quite a bit!

    -Jeremy T

    J and D Reptiles

  • @TheRavenAndTheCoyote honestly bites arent too bad....my friend was bitten by an extreme giant tegu as a feeding bite with head shaking and everything and only a little bit of blood. IT HURTS, but very rare too get serious damage. only about 5 people have ever gotten a finger bitten off. tegus have the capability to do serious damage but most of the time they dont.

  • @beardedDRAGON007 How big was the tegu. The B/W in this video bit me on a feeding day and split the skin right down my finger.

  • @JandDReptiles wow!! need stitches? i was bitten by a 3 footer, and my friend was bitten by a 4 and a half footer. mine didn't really hurt at all, only drew a couple drops of blood and some bruising. friend's bite wasn't all that bad, just some blood and bruising....if it isn't a feeding response bite or an aggresive tegu you likes hurting people, a bite won't do much damage in my opinion....lol

  • That lizard would purr if it could, it's happily sitting on your lap like a cat. What a lovely tegu!

  • Awesome. Awesome. Great video.

  • I need some help with my tegu... I have no clue what sex it is. I bought it from someone who could not take care of it. It does the same thing when u feed it, it jumps up and opens its mouth and I'm scared to pick it up. Ummm its about 16 inchs long. I need some advice on handling it, I don't want it to be mean when full grown.

  • @camillewalker21 You are going to have to take some bites from it... take bites while he is a juvie. You won't be able to sex it until it's a sub adult.

  • im on the verge of putting a deposit on a baby red tegu, the store has 2 but 1 has been sold already, i have a boa constrictor but she dont like to be handled and i want something that i can interact with a little more... great video!

  • @stubarura Takes a lot of time to get Tegus tame... generally they can be untrusting as babies and juvies... they aren't something that should just be gotten for interaction... they are super intelligent reptiles, that command a lot of respect... I'd work with the Boa for a bit! They are usually docile... you might take a few bites, but I'd rather boa bites, and finger crushing bites by a tegu!

    -Jeremy T.

Owner of J and D Reptiles

  • @JandDReptiles i think you mis-understand, my boa would never* bite me but at the same time she won't and will never want to interact with me in the way a tegu would, that is her nature there is no changing that. There is nothing wrong with being able to have a better level of interaction with a pet.

  • great video.im getn one this weekend, thx alot for the hole break down =]

  • How many enclosures do u go through in a tegus life? Just thinking budget wise. And reply to my name if u can give me an idea cause I'm gonna forget I made this comment. And check out my African bullfrog! Lol and a couple metal concerts I've been to!

  • @Geno1324 I'd say you'd go through about 3-4 encolsures during the life of you tegu... Hatchling size, Juvie size, sub adult size, and Adult size cages.

  • Can u do a vid on complete tegu care

  • Can u do a vid on complete tegu care

  • Does it eat raw or cooked meat?

    :P

  • thank you so much

  • hey, i have a BW tegu that i have had for a year now and he has not gotten much buch bigger i think mainly because i have not gotten him a new cage but i try to handle him alot and try to handle him right but every time i do he gets really aggressive(i have been bitten three times) and i am not sure how to fix this, i have gotten to the point to were i have stopped handleing him for a while, HELP ME

  • @ALPHA1x1USMC Cage size doesn't effect the size of any reptile. You need to rebuild some trust with your tegu before you can hold him again. Start by putting your hand in the enclosure and get him used to that, then touch him in the enclosure... then pick him up for a second and put him back in the enclosure and leave him alone for a while... then you can be able to hold him...it will take a little while to accomplish.

  • I might get a tegu. I had a bearded dragon but we had to sell him due to some circumestances and I was wondering what do you feed your tegu JanDReptiles? Like rats and mice?

  • @soulcage1000 I feed my tegus mice, chicken, ground turkey, and every so often fruits, if they are in the mood... LOL.

  • @JandDReptiles You brought up a VERY good point about feeding tegu's snakes etc. "Feeding them in the cage and taking them out of the cage and feeding" Good info man thanks!

  • @JandDReptiles i c what you did there, because fruits such as melons are aphrodisiac. you are clever

  • Hey I just picked up a Argentine tegu, and its a male. but anyways, i was wondering how long it takes for the males to get the Jawls? And do all males get them?

Thanks hope to here from you soon!

  • @tankjoey Yes all males get them... it's a sign of maturity, so it takes a while before they become very prominent.

  • A lil technique i learned that works well for snakes, I'm not sure about tegus, but you can feed them in a different place. Like if you put them in a big container and you feed them in it every time its feeding time and theyll get used to that setting being the meal area. Perhaps that'll help from having them bum rush you outta the cage.

  • @Dictun Doesn't work all the time with these big guys... when they want food, they just want food... doesn't matter where they are fed. And with the snakes, it really doesn't make a huge difference where you feed them... I personally have way to many snakes to use feeding containers, but none of my snakes jump out at me for food. But, all snakes are different! :)

    -Jeremy T.

Owner of J adn D Reptiles

  • @Dictun This is a technique that most gu owners employ. Its a personal choice and some tegus will not respond the same as others. I used this when taming two of my gus, its really great seeing as you are handling them on a daily basis and getting them used to the idea that you BRING them to the food and not that you ARE the food. =)

  • Amazing video, my tegu is very tame and I bought a leashe for it :p they are amazing lizards, I wish I had more.

  • how do you build trust? see with my sav monitor, you can itch the side of his neck and he'll lean against and other times he'll hide and also with handelling i life his cork bark and pick im up then after 10-15 secs he's squirming and going nuts yet when i lay him on my chest when im laid down he chills a bit and sometimes squirms but especially settles when im petting his head.

where am i going wrong or am i going right and he's still learning?

oh and he's about 7 months and just over a foot

  • @1JoshSquash He is still very young, he is gonna squirm for a while. Start building trust by petting him and holding him in the cage... then work on taking him out and handling him. Building trust with any large lizard takes time! :)

  • exactly what does a baby argentine tegu look like, as for color?

i've got a baby black and white tegu, but i dont know if he is argentine or columbian.

some internet pages say aregentines have a distingtive white stripe and 2 loreal scales....and the columbians only have 1.

my problem is that mine has no stripe, but 2 scales. could it also be that he is yo young to develope his stripe? hes ruffly 9 months old and has ALLOT of yellow on his back but his belly and tail are white/black

  • @CemetaryGatesML Got any pics, or a vid up of him?

  • hey there! I got a savannah monitor about a month ago. He's about a foot long is pretty cool and does really well inside his cage. I've been putting my hands in his cage to let him know im not going to hurt him. And he seems to understand. He'll let me hold him for about 30 seconds in his cage until he squirms. The problem comes when I take him out of his cage and put him on the floor. Hew becomes very aggressive(puffing hissing biting). What can I do to calm him down outside his cage?

  • @ehopkins12 Savs are great! He is acting aggressive outside of the cage on the floor probably because he feels more vulnerable. He went from being in his cage, which he knows with his loving owner, to being in this HUGE world with a potential predator.... feel free to handlehim outside the cage, but I'd suggest getting him used to being out before being put on the floor.

    -Jeremy T.

  • @JandDReptiles sounds good! thanks a lot!

  • @ehopkins12 also,, remember...hes not being agressive, hes being defensive

  • do they get along with cats and dogs?

  • @andy3313 They can, but I wouldn't recommend leaving them alone together....

  • A couple of months ago I rescued an Argentine B&W Tegu. He is pretty aggressive.. He is said to be 3 years old, and if that is true his growth is retarded. He is only 2 and a half feet long. What are the chances of him taming down at this point? It would make my work a lot easier. He has been through hell, and I don't know if I should attempt to tame him or leave him alone?

  • @TJsHerps He was probably fed a poor diet with no, or not good UV lighting. Taming will be hard, but is possible... first, you need to build up a trust with him... when u feed him, stand/sit near his cage, so he can see you, so he can see you are not a threat, then you can work on the handling part....

  • Hi Jeremy!

Really nice videos, you are doing a really good job.

I would like to see you while you are feeding your tegus. Hope you could cover that on a future video.

Also I'm thinking of getting a black and white tegu myself too so I was wondering if the cage you got for yours is the same size as for the red tegus. I want a cage that a tegu can live his whole life in it.

    Regards

    Niclas

  • Thanks a bunch! I can try to get a tegu feeding vid up soon! :) With tegus, U kind of need to get a cage per-size of ur tegu, as ur tegu grows, so does the cage. I can make a vid on that too! :)
