This song is so absolutely beautiful. It was playing in my drawing class the other day as everyone worked and I just thought "wow, this is so perfect. It just fits every artist" beautiful.
WHAT!? This incredibly ironic. I had to perform the Jim/Claudia restaurant scene from this movie the other day in my acting class and a few weeks ago my teacher and I were talking about M. Ward (before I even got this scene to do). She wanted us to pick a song to inspire us for our scenes and I was gonna pick M. Ward's "Vincent O'Brien." Now I find this amazing M. Ward/ Magnolia video and it's absolutely haunting. Excellent job on the video.
i find that alot of people are discovering daniel through newer artist covering his stuff, and i think its awesome, like bright eyes covering devil town is what led me to him and im so amazed by his stuff
i love m.ward. his covers are always great. not necessarily as raw as daniel johnston, but they're always well arranged. i especially love his cover of to go home on post-war.
The original has so much depth and emotion...I enjoy hearing other versions of Johnston's work, but I agree that the original is how it was supposed to be. This version doesn't evoke(in me)NEARLY the amount of emotion that the original does.
is this song actually in the movie, or has someone edited it with this song over the top? looks like a real thought provoking film, still trying to find it!!!
This is so much better than the original. For one thing, M. Ward is in tune, and also we don't have to listen to that terrible piano. Still, props to Johnston for doing the groundwork.
what a great engineer mward is (see jenny lewis!).
At the very beginning of this song, before his guitar plays the melody, you hear Daniel play the melody on his piano. A subtle and tasteful nod to Daniel perhaps.
I agree with chbrules...this is an amazing video. sweet irony. this song (hearing daniel sing it banging at his piano), mward on his trapeez, this breathtaking scene from magnolia....life is good when it's this sad...state of emergency...where i want 2 B
The movie is Magnolia. The song was written by Daniel Johnston, a manic depressive who started making tapes of his songs and handing them out when he was a teenager. There was a tribute album of his songs being played by M Ward, Tom Waits, Beck, Conor Oberst, and several others. The original version of this song is one of the saddest I've ever heard.
millions of frogs were harmed in the making of this movie.

This was an unsettling video to watch before bed, does anybody know the story of the video? I assume it wasn't made to go with Ward's cover.
The frogs were cute (in a sad way) bouncing off the diving board.

I actually found a few bands through bright eyes, both daniel johnston and m ward, which makes this cool.
plus when i first listened to Story of an artist i actually thought this would sound cool with a lower voice and a guitar, and voila found it.
