@t3hrasturbator, I don't think he believes in them, But you're right, They DO help a great deal!!!! I have one on my '71 Westfalia Bus, Would NEVER be able to drive it without one!!!
if you're having trouble steering with one hand, which I assume most people would driving a heavy machine like that, then you should invest in a steering knob.
@t3hrasterbator I suspect thats a common misperception; let me explain. Steering knobs are a throwback to the 1950's and 60's - they were meant for power assisted steering that was many turns lock to lock so you can easily spin the wheel to save time.(unlike todays cars with close ratio steering that may be only 2.5 turns lock to lock intead of 5 or 6) In my non power assist VW bus application a spinner knob would likely just break off- they do not provide any additional mechanical advantage.
@WESTY70, Also when I'm cruising in my '71 Westy, I'm NOT guzzling down tanker truck loads of gas with each mile!!! I'm sipping it just as easily as one sips a fine vintage wine!!!
@WESTY70 I REALLY ENJOY you poking fun at the person who passes you and Hutch on the left!!! I completely agree with you on that!!! Too many people it seems to me are in too much of a hurry for who knows what, "Gottta go!!!! I'm late!!! I'm late for THIS or THAT!!!" These people need to relax and enjoy life and NOT try to work themselves up into a cardiac arrest frenzy!!! That's why I thoroughly enjoy cruising in my '71 Westy, I'm NEVER in a hurry to go anywhere!!! Plus I'm NOT guzzling down ta
@ford9572 Thanks you guys - glad so many people appreciate my old bus !
My dad restored a 71 bus years ago and gave it to me when I hit 16, and then helped me fix this 70 up years later - he's since passed away so this bus is very special to me ;)
@WESTY70 Excuse that nonsense following my comment, For some reason when I try to post comments that I've written, When I click "Send", It says, "YouTube Not Available", But when I watch the same video again, My comment appears. So there's I guess a bit of a delay in getting my comments posted sometimes.
@WESTY70 I was born in '72, We had some friends who had a white '72 Westy, But it didn't have the full pop-top, It just had a small, square pop-up section in the middle of the roof, But other than that, It had the full Westy interior, I have some pictures of it and it's kind of odd because it has the 1968 style "Lowlight" parking/turn signal lights on the front as well as the rounded step-bumper, But I think it might have disc brakes because it has the flat hubcaps and wheels with brake ventila
@yamahonkawazuki Yep!!! They're 100% dependable & reliable & EXTREMELY easy to work on!!! No fancy Electronic Fuel Management Systems etc, My '71 Westy still looks, runs & drives like new, It doesn't have much pickup, That's for sure, But it has more than enough low-end torque to get moving and that's all that matters to me, Plus I don't have to worry about speeding tickets either.
im getting one for my 18th bday...... can i use a bus for daily use... going to schoo. and work??? or should i get something else... but i really want a bus..a and i live in san diego city busy streets?? help thanks
@jphrz08 Sure you can if you learn to maintain it yourself!!
Otherwise it will bleed you dry. An old ACVW needs about $1000 worth of maintenance each year if you pay someone else to do it. Of course, your labor is free...Glad to see the interest - my son is your age and HATES riding in the bus and has never driven it yet :)
@WESTY70 the irony of it all is theyre EASY to work on. id say your son hates it because it doesnt have much "pickup" , but its dependable as all hell, and if you keep her happy, she'll do likewise
My grandma drives a power EVERYTHING -- steering, braking, windows, etc. -- Dodge Caliber automatic and yet, she got passed in a VW bus! It was hilarious.
How can he hold the camera, Drive, shift & keep an eye on the dog at the same time? I'll tell you how,
He can do that because he's a Magic Man!!!
Oh, Yeah Baby he's a Magic Man!!!
And he's got the Magic Hand!!!
This is NOT all that hard to do, I've done the same thing, Driving, Shifting & filming me typing on my laptop while driving my '71 Westy Bus at 50 mph down a gravel country road!!!
i have a 77 bus is a little rusty and all the peaple goin at 100KM and i at 50km and the peaple looke at me like MOVE!!!!! haha i a go hehe i dont spend alot of gassss!!! hahaha 25 dolars at week to go to work and night clubs JUST 25 dolars hehehe and my mom and my dad in they new car v6 40 to 60 dolars the full tank. and i go ok old car but economic :D
Great Vid! How did you hold the camera, steer, and shift?! Love the comments too: "truck in my rear-view mirror, not goin' fast enough for him" "rush, rush, rush." You sound like me when I drive my bus, I always wonder where people are going in such a hurry when they pass me.
@lastmondaypast1 'Not gonna see anyone stare in Arizona. Little or no foot traffic and an occasional bike. All you're gonna see is mainly Chevy Tahoe and Suburbans, and the rest are normal vehicles.
Indeed. besides LOOK at teh steering wheel size too. heh im in hte market for another bus. i miss mine, that and a ferrari 308, tbh id rather drive a westy/bus, more than the italian to

@ford9572 Yep, as far as old cars go - ACVW's are pretty easy on the wallet. I had a Baja bug once that would push 30 mpg...
