If Mom-n-Pop stores can offer the same prices as Walmart then I will shop at the Mom-n-Pop stores. I don't go shopping in a store to find a "smiling face", I go to find the lowest price. In this day and time of low paychecks and high prices I won't pay more just to have an annoying employee all up in my face offering to help me pick a freaking hammer or whatever. So Mom, Pop, if you can't match the Walmart price, you need to bow out gracefully.

Regardless of the ecenomic impacts of Wal Mart, I don't go there anymore because their service, presentation of the store, and long lines while half the checkout counters are closed is beyond terrible.
I work at walmart, as an overnight stocker, I see shit that we get for 2 dollars being sold at 15 dollars. Not just one item, but virtually everything is being sold for over 5 times it's worth, and here I am making 9 dollars an hour, because I decided to work nights, Our money is going overseas and we're becoming slaves to walmart. I've made a conscious effort to stop spending the money I make working there, shopping there. They are destroying our economy and bringing in our chinese overlords
I don't see anything wrong with Wal Mart, simply because it is no different than Kroger or any of these Dollar stores...they all have low prices, and that is a blessing for low income, minimum wage families. If it weren't for Wal Mart, I would not have 80% of the stuff I have now, because I would not be able to afford it anywhere else. I worked at Wal Mart for about a year, and I regret quitting so much because I never got the pay, benefits, raises, or bonuses anywhere else. Let's face it.

I'm currently working there and have been for three years it's horrible the way we are treated so poorly. Pay:$10 an hour hardly livable wage. Benefits: $5000 Deductible for just me which I'll never make and thats $50 evry 2weeks Raises:40cents ayear and as of the end of this year no more bonuses so lets face it

If you need "proof" of anything these guys are saying-take a trip to Austin,Minnesota. They fought Wal-Mart for as long as they could, and now their downtown is emptying out, the retail area NW is closing up-they already have a dying mall. It is so sad because the largest employer is adding jobs-there is money in Austin, Walmart shows up and bleeds the town economically.
The way i see it the more people who look for an alternative the better. There's Target, Costco, and other Big department stores, They aren't a complete monopoly yet. And if it cost me a few extra hundred dollars a year so be it, Walmart sells alot of garbage, I always get better deals on electronics at Best buy. I've seen this before I'm watching it a second time. Watching Don Hunter talk about how his business got started makes me so sad and so mad at the same time. If Walmart is successful enough that consumers prefer to shop at their stores (no one is forcing them you fascists) than stores with higher prices and/or poor service would be forced to close or relocate. If a town only has a Wal-mart store than it is up to another provider to compete and provide more places to shop.

@sidsthirdeye Awesomely summed up! I live in Seattle where mom n pops are where the business is at. We don't have a Wal Mart in the city, but we still have Fred Meyer's(Kroeger) and 1 Target. Also, tons of Starbucks. Overall, it seems as though most Seattlites support mom n pops and they are successful. Even the indie coffee shops kick ass with great product, and get enough business that Starbucks can't touch them. More communities need to think this way.

Except that All Socio economic models show that having one major stock provider is monopolistic in that all surrounding businesses die (Or at least suffer greatly) but businesses such as that tend to be an acute drain on the local economies resources. I work at walmart, as an overnight stocker, I see shit that we get for 2 dollars being sold at 15 dollars. Not just one item, but virtually everything is being sold for over 5 times it's worth, and here I am making 9 dollars an hour, because I decided to work nights, Our money is going overseas and we're becoming slaves to walmart. I've made a conscious effort to stop spending the money I make working there, shopping there. They are destroying our economy and bringing in our chinese overlords

I don't see anything wrong with Wal Mart, simply because it is no different than Kroger or any of these Dollar stores...they all have low prices, and that is a blessing for low income, minimum wage families. If it weren't for Wal Mart, I would not have 80% of the stuff I have now, because I would not be able to afford it anywhere else. I worked at Wal Mart for about a year, and I regret quitting so much because I never got the pay, benefits, raises, or bonuses anywhere else. Let's face it.

Heck you could come to Fayetteville NC, drive down Ramsey street which used to be the rich nice part of town, walmart came in and then moved a half a mile down the road so not only are all the companies they put out of business empty but they left their own old building empty to. Personally I won't shop there, the ones here have the worst service imaginable they have like 50 cash registers but it seems like no matter what time of day you go they only have 2 cashiers working. They fought Wal-Mart for as long as they could, and now their downtown is emptying out, the retail area NW is closing up-they already have a dying mall. The way i see it the more people who look for an alternative the better. There's Target, Costco, and other Big department stores, They aren't a complete monopoly yet. And if it cost me a few extra hundred dollars a year so be it, Walmart sells alot of garbage, I always get better deals on electronics at Best buy. If Walmart is successful enough that consumers prefer to shop at their stores (no one is forcing them you fascists) than stores with higher prices and/or poor service would be forced to close or relocate. If a town only has a Wal-mart store than it is up to another provider to compete and provide more places to shop.

Also, tons of Starbucks. Overall, it seems as though most Seattlites support mom n pops and they are successful. Even the indie coffee shops kick ass with great product, and get enough business that Starbucks can't touch them. More communities need to think this way.

Except that All Socio economic models show that having one major stock provider is monopolistic in that all surrounding businesses die (Or at least suffer greatly) but businesses such as that tend to be an acute drain on the local economies resources. It has been shown that businesses such as this do not re invest in the local community. Take Piggly wiggly for example. Bit business back in the 20s. Spread like fire. But a majority of the informed public are aware of this. I believe, it might be best to leak this onto people who otherwise are not informed/do not know even slightly.

Thats why i hear more and more ppl stay awy from wal mart--they go out of thier way o shop somewhere else;;I am one of them..

if your looking for a good company look up "winco foods" from the day youget hired you have the option to own stock in the company. each store is owned by its employees its truly a great store
i think they are mostly in oregon an washington state
my point is that a BOX store can be positive if its respectful to employees
and doesnt cut corners buying foriegn goods
