Keeping wild animals in confinement is extremely difficult! Just their nutrition is a balancing act. As ruminants unable to break down particle sizes, they are partial to subclinical acidosis - they can appear perfectly healthy from the outside but have absolutely no fat accumulation inside. This info is currently new even to zoos. My point is - the death of the giraffe probably had more to do with our lack of understanding in keeping animals in captivity and less to do with animal cruelty.
