i am not sure why its surprising this works - its just how many fish you may loose from them being scared off by the boat and your shadow. I mean those fish just happen to be there looking anyway - if you were casting into them you might have even a better chance... I guess i don't see where this is helping you.??

Obviously you've never been snagging before. What he is doing is no where near snagging. The fish are hitting his bait, not the other way around. I learned this technique when I was a kid, but we used cane poles instead. It can be very effective.
Its just like the Figure Eight method for musky fishing. I think it works so well not only because you can stay in the strike zone all you want but because the sporadic action of the lure along with the increased vibrations sent off by the lure really sets off their instincts and triggers them to bite.
@Frisby1419 Yes, especially if the shoreline had just a little top cover the fish were under but only so much that you could still be able to reach out to the edge. One consideration is if you would spook the fish with your profile. I've done it before with a longer pole and was able to stay away from the fish and was successful.
Technically it is fishing but NOT sports fishing. Hook your bass lift if up and that's it, where's the reeling it in and the fight??? I would not adopt this method unless I was starving and had only one lure.
I practice a similar technique for pike, upon retrieving, I perform several figure-eights in the water just below me, because they follow lures and bait right up to the boat on a regular basis.
Ive seen a similar technique work for smallmouth up North.... Basically figure-8ing with spinners. Would suggest leaving a bit more line out than 3-4 inches from rod tip. Good video though, thumbs up!
