  • My mom's Yorkie has been doing this for 2 1/2 years now, the vet we use treated it as the 'reverse sneezing' and just gave him steroids and antihistamines and told us when he does it to just rub on his sides to calm him down and do the light breathing into his face, in his nose to help him catch his breathe. He ended up with an enlarged heart and liver and almost diabetic from all the steroids they kept giving him for it so when these other problems started we took him to a different vet.

  • @civicchic The new vet said this wasn't the case and referred us to a dog hospital near by, they did a scope on him and found he had an elongated soft palate that was causing this and is having surgery today to repair it.

  • Don't worry this is totally normal in a dog it's called a reverse sneeze. My dog gets these all the time and all you have to do is just try to give them water or gently pat them on the back:) hope this helps:)

  • Hi, I have a miniature fox terrier who has a cough like this, he was a rescue dog and put it down to being out in the cold when he was so tiny, as took him to the vets and he has scar tissue on his lungs. It is hard to watch when he gets one of his coughing fits and as others said its usually over excitement that can trigger it, I've found that when he starts coughing it helps if I lift him and gently sway him back and forth as it gets more air into his lungs and he stops.

  • My yorkie has been doing it for years! Mainly when she's excited

  • @nicolecampbelll - this can be a symptom of a congestive heart problem. Our pharoah hound had the same sounding cough, especially when she got excited. After some simple tests, she was diagnosted with having a mytril valve disorder leading to congestive hear failure. You might want to have you vet check her out. They can give them meds to help.

  • My shih tzu does the same thing its so hard watching him do it my vet told me he was okay but he doesn't look okay when he does it :(

  • @ashlyndenbybaby You might want to have your vet specifically test him for heart problems - this kind of coughing is a common symptom of congestice heart disease.

  • My chihuahua makes exactly the same noise when she's overexcited. My vet says that most toy breeds have too small of an airway for their body, so when they hyperventilate it makes a honking noise.

What we do when she starts doing this is we pick her up and calm her down.

  • My puppy started doing this around 3 AM. :/ I woke up and freaked out, but she stopped and went back to sleep so I did too. It's been randomly happening all day. I seriously can't afford an over time vet. I tried some Benadryl and it didn't seem to help or really do anything. I couldn't take her today because my Grandma was gone until the vet closed. What can I do over the weekend before I take her to the vet? Do I just deal with it? Could she get worse until Monday? :(

  • @daisukinokaze I am thinking kennel cough. My dog woke me up at 3am this morning doing the same thing. I am waiting for the vet to call me back right now.

  • That's not a cough its more like a backwards sneeze and its prevalent in chi's actually. She could have just inhaled food down the wrong way OR she could have somethin g serious like a collapsing trachea. Which isn't as bad as it sounds but needs to be checked. Some dogs just do that out of excitement also but still worth a vets look.

  • My dog does the exact same thing! Mainly after eating. Does anyone know if this is bad or not?? I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow so hopefully he can figure it out!

  • My lhassa used to do it,because their nose are very short. We call espasmo.

  • my friend [who owns 3 drug dogs] said they are just coughing so it is fine but u should consult a vet and they can deal with the problem they is a very miner chance the may have a disease or infection

  • my dog just did this

  • My dog does this too plz help :(

  • It is collapsed tracheal...My mini poodle was just diagnosed with it. look up collapsed tracheal on the internet to educate yourself. My dog does this 2 to3 times a day and we just hold her and try to get her to relax. My heart goes out to you.

  • From what I've read, if this dog has a collapsing trachea, it is not harmless if it gets worse and it CAN get worse. Small dogs like Pomeranians can get this disorder and it can be serious in some cases.

  • Thank you for posting you helped many people with there dogs who do this. My Bichon does this she just started it. I am in the vet field was for 39 years. I don't have the ability to get the meds anymore I'm retired. This helps posting. Two vets told me it is an allergy, and her throat is sore from the harness I bought a harness that goes around her shoulders. She is on Antib. meds. Again thank you for posting this video and give your baby a hug from me and my two babies.

  • Sounds like kennel cough

  • thats exactly wat my dog does he did it right now n i m scared really scared

  • im so glad that you posted this because my baby has been doing this for the last few days and has been scaring me... he is a chi-weenie. :(

  • @amandalinville it is reverse sneezing if nothing is in its nasal passages such as mites there is nothing to be worried about. Little dog reverse sneeze because they are excited and breathe in to much air. You can stop it by pinching his nose, and having the dog breathe out threw his mouth or rubbing his trachea.

  • @amandalinville I'm glad you said what kind of dog you have. One of my chiweenie's does this, now I feel a little better knowing its normal and other chiweenies do it as well!

  • It's a reverse sneeze. All dogs do it. No one knows exactly why. There are some people that think it may be associated with allergies. Some people say that if you massage the throat or calm your dog it'll calm down and feel better.

  • my dog has same problem! I couldn't find the way to cure him.. pls tell me the solution of it!

  • my 6month old Maltese does this EXACT same thing, freaks me out because i be thinking he's choking :(

  • @divaroj you BE thinking he's choking?

  • 00:18 this is SSOO cute!

  • Haha my dog paco does this too xD poor paco

  • My chiahuahuas do this to, i believe its a problem with the trachea it partially closes and causes them to do this, from what i understand its fairly common in small dogs, mine will do this a few times alot when there excited and only last for a few seconds.

  • saw some negative comments on this, some people are clearly not very bright, having the ability to read a description but enough ability to click a play button, in a few months i could train my dog to do that ;)

Im glad you uploaded this our dogs had the same thing and its been scaring the life out of us for a few months. hes a tiny pug/pom cross but he seems strangely unaffected by it coughing for a bit looking slightly stunned then goes back to sleep.

  • thanks for posting this; my dog is a 3 yr old bichon, and her weight is around 15-17lbs, and she does exactly the same every 5-10 minutes, and it lasts for like 10 seconds. I was so scared cuz I thought she may has heart problem or something. Therefore, I feel so much relieved after watching this clip and reading all the comments.

  • inverted sneezing..very common in small dogs, especially in chihuahuas. nothing to freak out about. it'll go away after a few minutes. my 2 chihuahuas do it all the time when they get really excited.

  • It ethier gonna puke or it's coughing and it's got lung worm

  • My doggy does this too!!!:o it just means they hav a stuffed up nose.

  • it's called a reverse sneeze. my 5 pound chihuahua does it everytime he's real excited or just waking up. i think it's very normal for small dogs and especially dogs with short noses!

  • funny

  • woahhh my dog does the exact same thing and he's a tea cup maltese :O omg i hope your dog gets better :) if your dog ever did get treated....what illness did it have and how do you treat it? thanks :D

  • this is reverse sneezing.

  • this is reverse sneezing.

  • This could be congestive heart failure, which causes caughing because the swolen heart presses on the trachea

  • Not all dog coughs are kennel cough. My dog was coughing like that and was diagnosed with pneumonia due to blastomycosis. It can be fatal if not treated properly. It's imperative to take your pet to the vet. I had no idea he could have blasto, the results from my online search were leading to either kennel cough or canine influenza, which delayed my visit to the vet. Wanted to share my experience with other pet owners, get informed but don't rely solely on internet research.

  • My shihtzu used to do the exact same thing when she would get excited. she would return to normal after the episode. What I used to do is gently without hurting her is force her mouth open so she could breathe and her snorting would stop. I don't use any great force at all just gently.

  • My boyfriend's daschund does that once in awhile it's not harmful just pick him up and rub his sides and calm him down,by the way he looks like Roxy my little Teacup Chihuahua same colors and similar markings he could pass for her father!!

  • Dr. Bauer here;

    Your dog is coughing!

  • reverse sneezing

  • ..seriously it sounds like reverse sneezing people its fuckin harmless

  • i think ur an idiot as well..posting it on youtube and saying its 4 your vet??does ur vet have a freaking office..or possibly an email account..no he asked you to post it on youtube..lmao..get a new vet!

  • dats kennel cough

  • Thanks for posting this LEM. Very helpful.

  • it's called the reverse sneeze. look it up. even though it sounds scary and looks like your dog is in pain, it's not harmful to them. i have two chihuahuas that do that and i just gently rub their neck/chest and they calm down a bit.

  • BEST VIDEO.... so its called hacking sneeze? wow i never knew it, so i was reseacrhing about it. my chihuahuas do it to and i started to research about it so i have a better idea of how to explain to my vet what they are doing. this video is by far a perfect example of what to tell a vet. I thought it was like a heart murmur or something to do with the lungs but THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH...

  • What did the vet say? My Chihuahua also does the same thing...

  • I posted for my vet to see so he could diagnose the problem... he asked me to since my dog wasn't doing it at the vet's office, so lets rethink the name calling. You can see from the rest of the comments on here that no one is laughing or enjoying it. You didn't have to watch it if it was going to cause you so much discomfort and unrest.

  • @lem31684 lem I do not understand why people have to say such hurtful and hateful things. My heart goes out to you my Pommerian is going through Congestive Heart failure..God bless you

  • @ChildoftheKing2008 ??God?? You mean Dog i suppose. God doesn't exist.

  • @Marcos132132 you are a stupid idiot!!!! If you kew anything the dog is not going through pain. It is only painful for the person to hear their dog go through this!!!! This helps others that have their dog doing this at 1 or 2 am and can not afford a vet call! People like you make me want to die!

  • @Marcos132132 - sorry dude, but this video was very helpufl to me and my dog. Now I understand why my dog does this. STUPID COMMMENT.

  • I took my dog to the vet for the exact same thing as your dog is doing on the video. He said it was nothing to be alarmed over. A dog can not get rid of his mucus like a human can, therefore the mucus drains in the back of the dogs throat. So when the dog is making that noise he is sucking back the mucus and swallowing it. This is what my vet explained to me. He also said the dust has alot to do with it. Im not sure how accurate he is, but hopefully this is somewhat helpful.

  • @Marcos132132 Youre the idiot

  • @Marcos132132 he is not in pain my dog has the same its called reverse sneezing u have to put your hand on his nose look here '/watch?v=bbjv0YIm9LQ&feature=related'

  • @Marcos132132 fck you and your ignorance.

  • Yes, it's called 'reverse sneezing' (for some obscure reason. Apparently it's not as bad as it sounds, it used to freak me out too when my Papillon did it.

My vet explained to me that especially in small dogs the soft pallet can sometimes be a bit long which occasionally irritates the dog. Then they try to clear that irritation away but of course it doesn't work because the pallet is attached. Hope this helps a little, I know it's scary!

  • next time he does that get somewater and put it on his nose. it works really well.

  • Looks like reverse sneezing. If so, it's caused by something caught in his throat, or irritation in the throat.

  • my dog does the same thing i just rub her neck and it gose away

  • @britneygirl2008 take ur dog to the vet asshole!!!!!!!11
