Canada spends $23 billion a year on keeping immigrants on goverment assistance. This is more than we spend on defense! Is this good?

That happens all the time inside the US- people move to more prosperous parts of the country to make a better living. If those immigrants are contributing to the economy, is there really a problem? @cleanhomer - A country is not measured by its population, but by its productivity. Afirca is the worlds biggest producer of babies with a population of 1,022,234,000 people. Yet its entire GDP has only just surpassed Belgium with a population of 10 million people. Hong Kong's GDP exceeds Nigeria's, though Nigeria has 20 times as many people and much more land. Canada spends $23 billion a year on keeping immigrants on goverment assistance. This is more than we spend on defense! Is this good?

Can a Muslim schoolteacher be absent every Friday afternoon to attend prayers at his mosque? And if non-Christian parents feel ill-at-ease, should a daycare take down its Christmas decorations? As the first generation of Canadians raised under the banner of multiculturalism graduates to positions of power, serious fissures are emerging in the Canadian mosaic....

@cleanhomer - The backlash against Tamil asylum seekers and the arrest of a Canadian-born doctor and Canadian Idol contestant in an alleged Islamist terror plot all raise questions about Canada’s nurturing of cultural difference. Even one of our most prominent minority politicians, Ujjal Dosanjh, accuses multiculturalism of allowing Sikh extremism to take root here. Immigrant d do not "inegrate." They live in their own (growing) ethnic ghettoes and often do not learn to speak English.

@cleanhomer - I recently has an interesting conversation with a young Filipino man who was angered by the fact that, during the ceremony to receive his Canadian citizenship, an elderly Hindu woman requested a translator sho she could take the citizenship exam in Hinustani. I mean, this kid was vocal enough to ask the officials, "why didn't she learn to speak English?" The fact that he was a visible minority probably saved him from being arrested! However....

Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and even our Commonwealth cousin Australia have all, to differing degrees, blamed multiculturalism for separating peoples, weakening national cohesion and encouraging Islamic extremism. ASs you asked the question on immigration, multiculturalism is fueled by immighration, and it isn't working. Quebec takes the question of immigration very seriously.

Beneath whatever costumes, individual or collective habits, accents, and unimportant ethnicities we have, people basically want respect & act on the same principles of fear & trust. If they're given respect, they'll appreciate it- even if it's not immediately noticeable; and if they're not given respect, they won't appreciate it.
