  • @supergrilledcheese - Probably the PMS Crescent - traditional and very little baffle - but one size does not fit all - end product is what you would be after - not a name brand.....

  • @supergrilledcheese - played the new Alto Guardala's at NAMM and the Brecker Alto was the one that seemed close to me. Nadir keeps coming out with new models and and actually has a Florida Link model that is way dark, and the Crescent that is a little less dark - then the Brecker - nice :) PMS Germany....

  • Great improvisation :)) keeep it up I am trying to learn it ... I am Blues player and I have no problem to jamm but you are veryyy good :D

  • Awesome performance Greg. Where are you and Melvin located?

  • great solo skills, maybe you were only in A-minor but perfect really....;)

  • SAXY GOOD TIMES!

  • i enjoyed watch Charles and Greg play off each , very special

  • I'm looking at purchasing a Custom Z alto. Do you recommend lacquer? Unlacquered? I know that unlacquered saxes produce a pure sound, but I've also heard that black saxes produce a darker tone which might be better for Jazz. Please respond, thanks! :)

  • if i knew this sax solo id be the happiest saxist

make a video tutorial please , i wanna learn it .....

  • Excelente quem sabe um dia chego lá...

    Fik com DEUS

  • WOWWWW!!!!! Makin that look effortless....amazing!

  • WONDERFULL

  • this is impressive great sound

  • also when you have watched 1000 times it`s still amazing. i`m playing sax by myself and i love jazz music and things like this, but i`m living in austria and there you have not many chanches to learn playing jazz when you are only 14. that`s why i learned by myself, and i love it!!!!!!!!!

mr. vail once in my life i would like to ply like you!!!!!!

If you think i could improve on anything could you please tell me? Thanks You Rock Mr. Greg Vail!

  • Smoking alto playing! Lots of energy, but also very musical and fits the context fabulously!

btw, is that Melvin Davis on bass?

  • Wow, truly one of the best solos I´ve heard so far.

    Greetings from Germany

  • great alto tone..what's your set up?

  • @Passion613 - for this clip I was using an unLacquered Custom Z Yamaha Alto Sax with my Bebop Traditional Guardala Mouthpiece gold plate and Rico Royal Plastic Cover 2 1/2 reeds - standard Guardala lig. Search Greg Vail Sax Gear for the full list on my main site GregVail dotcom!!

  • @gvSAXBOY what is better a yamaha ex or z...or do they have a specific function

  • yes

  • im in love lol.. greg vail is unbelivable sax player and a great guy.... hes the man!

  • woaaa, im shocked!! the only other place ive heard sax go so good with uptempo music is this group "INRG"! sax lovers look them up

  • great player! standard usless song

  • i've had a curvey soprano sax for a couple years and i could play it fine

i've just got a julius kenilworth tenor, and find it really hard to go make a good tone on both (it is hard to alternate)

  • Come Thou Fount.Amen

  • Praise the Lord!

  • Also...What kind of mouthpiece and reed do you use if you don't mind me asking?

  • Guardala gold Bebop traditional MPC with plastic cover 2 1/2.

  • Oh cool. I thought it looked like a Guardala.

  • nice sax Greg snd lyking da guyy on da keys with tha blue stripped shirt

  • Blue stripped shirt is one of my favourite music producer for Integrity music. He is none other than TOM BROOKS..........

  • Hey Greg,

Awesome job. I know the mouthpiece isn't really available, but do you have any good ideas for similar mouthpieces?

  • I love it .....great combination for such a beautiful song...like this...sax and the voice...so great ,cant help listen to it one more time.

  • This guys a great sax player

  • he must have gotten paid $3000 for the gig. Nice job.

  • sir my last question i forgot to add was what kinda reed is that and what strength

  • The reed is Rico Royal plastic cover 2 1/2 or 3.

  • Although I like all kinds of music, smooth jazz has been one of my favorite. However, since the body of Christ is quit diverse - I am growing to like all kinds of music. :) Thanks for posting this video it is a blessing. Praise God.

  • excuse me sir but i love yamaha's and i have some questions i know selmer c* mouthpiece is good for classical and for jazz i don't know could u tell me and that sax your playin on is it the 82z custom with your i believe m1 silverneck piece and the mouthpiece is a...i don't know but anyways awesome vid i subscribed and plz answer my questions

  • YEs - Yamaha 82Z and silver M1 neck. Guardala Mouthpiece Gold BeBop traditional. Not really available anywhere and very expensive! C* is not going to be a good jazz piece. Tends to be very dark, focused and too small for jazz.

  • i loved the solo at the beggining so catchy!!!

ur the best saxophonist ive seen on youtube

  • ohhh and I almost forgot!!! can you tell me which mouthpiece is good, but not so much expensive??? I would thank u so much Mr. GV!!

  • Meyer Mouthpieces are very good for Alto sax.

  • I have one question Mr. GV, do u have a Selmer sax??? I see u own a yamaha sax, but obviously a Selmer is much way better than a yamaha, so what can u tell about this??? hope u are fine, blessings.

  • that was a false statement you made. people tend to think selmers are better, but that is not always the case. i have played a few selmers, and none could compare to my yamaha 62 alto. yamaha makes some fine saxes. not all selmers are good. every saxophone is different. it's all about preference.

  • maybe for you man, but for me its much better my alto saxophone Bundy from Selmer, and you said so, is about preference.

  • Selmer is not much better than Yamaha. They are both different yet top instruments. I got rid of my Selmers because I never played them. My Yamaha's are much better than my Selmers ever were FOR ME. Some people feel the same about every saxophone maker on the planet. So don't worry about the name on the sax and start making it sound really good!!

One Size will never fit all!!

  • yeah you're right pal!!! it's all about making a good sound, because it doesn't matter the sax, it's up to the player, and of course combination of player and sax.

  • good music...

  • did you sold off your 875? what mouthpiece are you using? tip opening and reed? very nice tone! what i am looking for.. god bless u

  • The 875 Tenor is sold! The mouthpiece is Guardala handmade by Dave G and is really expensive and very hard to find. BeBop Alto gold plate - worth 2,000 US? Medium tip, plastic cover 2 1/2 reed, custom Z Yamaha un-Lacquered Alto.

    Good luck!! :)

  • anyone know what kind of sax he's using

  • Yamaha un-Lacquered Custom Z Alto Sax

  • Hey man, what's up this is Ryan. We talked last Sunday when you were at TRBC. This is the same song I did with Charles a couple years back! Obviously you do it a little better than I did...bahahaha what the crap you freakin blow me away.

Dude, so I noticed you were interested in tin whistle. You should definitely check out some of my whistle videos. I've been at it for about 2 years now. Tell me what you think! Later.

  • Hey Ryan, thanks for posting! Glad you like the clip! We had a lot of fun tracking this!! I will look at the Whistle stuff - really love them!

  • I enjoyed listening to this. I am sure it was a tremendous praise experience.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • It was an amazing night of worship!

I am really excited that Charles has a new one coming out later this year that I just got home from Virginia to record. Amazing worship form Charles Billingsley is coming again!

We tracked a special for TBN, and recorded for CD and DVD of the 2 hour concert! Can't wait to see the finished product!

    Thanks again and continued blessings,

    greg ~ gvSAXBOY

  • who was trhe band on the new dvd/cd??

  • LA Guys for the most part. Dan Bailey drums, Troy Welstad keys, Adam Lancaster piano, Nick Taras guitar, Tim Nienhuis guitar, Jonathan Ahrens bass, horn section Keith Smith and Greg Vail. It was a great band of mostly young guys - from this old guys perspective!! Then included tons of vocalist, Charles Billingsley of course and the Tim Davis with 2 chicks from Nashville, the University Choir and Thomas Road Baptists full choir. It was huge!

  • U CAN PLAY MAN

  • yo quiero saber q escala es la que metes en el segundo 30 por favor las notas no seas malo

  • un gran sonido ....exelente

  • gO hEAD Greg!!!

  • really really really good job men you are awesome

  • This is the best saxsolo i've ever heard! damn! nice!

  • lol 38: 47piano guy

  • Dig the hair, dig the sax, dig the playing :D Thanks for that, got me slappin my knee.

  • sounds so delicious

  • Thanks Warren! Looking record again with Charles next month. Hope there is video to share too!

  • Hello I play some smooth jazz, I have a YAS-62,a beechler metal 7 and I use plasticover also, what type of mouthpiece you use for the alto sax?

  • My Mouthpiece is a original Guardala BeBop traditional, gold plated MPC with the Guardala lig and Plastic Cover 2 1/2 reeds. I have since switched to Java's could stay on the cane from now on. I like the quick response on the plastic cover but the tone a little better with the cane??

    gvSAXBOY

  • What type of scale or notes did you play at 0:31/2, it sounds so good and here that kinda sound from other soloists but dont what it is.

    Cheers, nice playing

  • The bebop type playing usually comes from Charlie Parker influence. They have the Omnibook of his solos and I would suggest every sax player buy and learn Parker's solos! As you play them, you start to see and get a feel for the double time licks and how often he did that. It's like putting in a little taste of old school, around the groove style playing.

  • is this the 82Z custom alto?

  • is that a soprano sax

  • good.........very good...!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome.

  • you perform like Richard Elliot! you pumping though

  • what is the name of the guy that sings , he is has an awesome songs

  • Charles Billingsley and you can find him at his name dotcom!! He is amazing!

    gvSAXBOY

  • Oh man I can't get enough of this!

it just gives me a huge wave of emotion

  • Very cool! Share it! Post it! I love getting Charles name out there!

  • Great sound, soul, inspiration, emotion. Makes me wants to practice more and more!

  • Go for it bro!!!!

  • wow i am a jew but this is good

  • HAHAHAHA! How does being a Jew make it good or bad. too funny....

    Thanks for the kind words,

    gvSAXBOY

  • its about jesus praise the lord this lifts the soul by 10000%

  • This was an awesome night and I was so blessed to even be there playing with these amazing people! Charles has the ability to bring it right to the point and the point is Jesus bro!

    Glad you felt the 'lift'!

    gvSAXBOY

  • that was good but if you want to hear some reall good chops.. i suggest you listen to players like Kirk Whalum, Boney James. I play Keys Sax and Bass so I can apprecaite all music

  • Different strokes bro! That's why there are hundreds of different sounds that people all find a connection with. I love Kirk too, but Boney??? Different strokes... Looks like a few people did like the clip and I do have 19 others to check out in a variety of styles.

    gvSAXBOY

  • well then again i take boney name out of it...i guess boney james like kenny g play alot of commerical mosic that really requires a nartural major scale and blues scale...kirk is more complex

  • Gotta love Kirk!

  • Thanks man! Just stay on it, keep stretching what you can play and find inspiration everywhere you can.

    gvSAXBOY

  • this is awesome..........what is that lick you played at 0:31?

  • hahaha

Just some fast thing. Always throw a little taste of chops as a flavor in pop stuff. Thanks for your comment,

    gvSAXBOY

  • WOW! I bet you get tons of chicks...

  • too funny...

not really but thanks for the vote of confidence!

    gvSAXBOY

  • you really have a talent given from God to play the sax, Do you know where can I get any tips for playing the curved soprano sax

  • Help or instruction for a curved soprano would be the same as any soprano or sax for that matter. It's all about playing good saxophone, understanding the instrument and playing with good air and controlled fingers.

Not much different from one sax to the other. You might want to look up a good instructor in your area?

    gv

  • thanks

  • GV What kind of saxophone ur using?

  • Hey LirOLoveDf,

In this video I had a Yamaha Custom Z un-Lacquered Alto Sax I borrowed from Yamaha while major repairs had my Alto in the shop for a while.

This Z was a returned sax, said to be out of tune and play bad. Typical of many of the stories I hear about bad Yamaha's this sax was more than fine; it was amazing. It sounded great and played with ease.

My regular Alto is a Black Yamaha Custom 875 and can be viewed in other video here on my channel.

    Blessings,

    gv

  • well ive been playing 5 years and i got a selmer la voix do u think thats a good alto sax?

wat mouthpiece and reed type should i get?

  • Selmer is on of the very good sax makers. There are 4 sax makers with top marks around the world and Selmer is one of them!

Mouthpiece and reed choice has much to do with you and how you play. A good teacher would be your best bet to find the best combination for you since they can hear and see what you might need.

All I can suggest is the safe mouthpieces that many use on Alto Sax. Meyer is a big name. Also great mouthpieces are Yanagisawa, Rouseau and Jody Jazz. Medium facings are best #6

  • damn ur good

how did u get this good?

  • Well Dr, I have been playing sax for many years. Started for real over 30 years ago and had a sax 5 years before that to play around on.

If you do something for lots of years, you get good over time if you were trying to improve along the way.

The arts are the one area of life that age is a real plus. The older you get, the more time you have been playing an instrument, the more comfortable and skilled you will become!

Just stay with it and over time you will realize you got pretty dang good!

  • what can i do to play the way you do? can you provide me with tips and warm-ups that will me improve overall?

  • I have a bunch of articles online that might be of help. If you go to my My Space or Sax Players Blog, you can find links to my sites online. Many have found help from these sites for sax players. I can't list them here because the post will be deleted, but would ask you to search either the My Space or Blog and you will find probably 12 sites I run just to help sax players.

Blessings as you learn your instrument,

    Greg Vail SAXBOY

  • absolutly, utterly outstanding talent. Thanks foe sharing their gifts for us to be blessed.

  • You are very welcome!

    Blessings,

    Greg Vail SAXBOY

  • What Mouthpiece do you use

  • I use a hand made Guardala BeBop Traditional Gold Plate Alto Mouthpiece with the Guardala Lig and 2 1/2 Plasticcover reeds. Thanks for listening,

    Greg Vail SAXBOY
