  • Food trucks are unfair competition to brick and mortar stores.

  • This again is why you need small government and limited government with very little power. No one bussiness should use the Government to give them an unfair advantage. I love the food in taco trucks.

  • One other thing - the trucks hit Miracle Mile because the restaurants there aren't that good. It's like Baja Fresh and a Marie Callendar's and some other stores. The gourmet truck food I've had has been pretty lousy too - they could never compete in the working class neighborhoods against real taco and torta trucks. So the gourmet trucks go where they can compete to sell their overpriced food.

  • I see police busting food vendors who sell on the same street as drug dealers and prostitutes. While I can see some risks from these food vendors - some of them use hot coals in a box grill - I think the police are just afraid to bust the drug dealers and prostitutes because the gangs would intervene. Also, the police might be paid off by the gangsters. It's hard to know what's going on.

I can see their use in locations that don't have access to sit down resturants but they should have to remain at least a mile from permanent structure food establishments otherwise they are exploiting the money spent by the resturants in advertising.

    Michele Boldrine and David Levine's book "Against Intellectual Monopoly" is an awesome rebuttal to the classic arguments for copyright and patent protections. It's chock full of studies and reference to history.

In "Everything I Want to do is Illegal" by Joel Salatin (a book a read cuz I saw it on Reason) he talks about the same stuff with meat processing.   • While it is certainly wrong for LAPD to hand out these kind of fines, I ask you viewers to empathize with the Restaurant Owners, which this video seems to demonize as much as the LAPD.

    If you are a restaurant owner dealing with health inspectors, liquor laws, and increasing property taxes, you'd be angry because the Gov. has driven up your operating costs. Since you know you can't make the laws go away, you might feel like your livelihood depended on promoting a more even playing field.

  • RE: Not to say it's okay for cops to harass these people. And I know that there is licensing involved in food cart operation, though not as much. BUT sit-down restaurants would be MUCH cheaper if there were no property taxes, minimum wage laws, etc. The real focus of this video should be the cause, not the effect.

    You shouldn't need a government permission slip for a food cart, or a restaurant, or anything else.

  • Since small businesses are closing down left and right, while government expenditures go up and fewer people are paying taxes, the government is looking to acquire more revenue. This "revenue" is acquired by finding any finable infractions possible, and imposing them on small businesses as well as on working-class citizens. When was the last time you got pulled over by a cop for a traffic stop and they let you go with a just warning? Won't happen any more...

  • Where in this video was there an indicator that the police's actions were driven by 'upset restaurant owners'? As far as I can tell it was just an assumption.

    Another possible reason would be that police have quotas to fill.

  • Brick and mortars do in fact get upset about street vendors. It usually stems from a vendor "encroaching" on their "turf". You have to remember that Brick and mortars pay rent, property taxes, etc. on top of the permit needed by street vendors.

    While some of this may be unfounded, because they often cater to separate tastes, feelings do get hurt.

    Reason: You should take a look at vendors in NY and the black market that has arisen around the business of permits. Some of those permits can cost 1m

    In Toronto Canada the hot dog carts are owned by organized crime. They don't get hassled by the government because the gangsters have an effective "lobbing" power. Instead the vendors pay protection money. It just as bad.

  • @coffee - I see your point. I also was alluding to the high taxes the restaurants pay in terms of property taxes. It is an advantage to just park though.

    There's a small city in my state that instigated a tax on light bulbs in restaurants. Yes, that's right. They pay taxes on the light fixtures in the restaurants. They already have a tax on the # of chairs.

    This hurts the small mom & pops and of course, the larger ones support this kind of tax to destroy their competition.

Mercantilism is frequently misidentified as capitalism and mercantilism has nothing to do with free market. Mercantilism employees government regulation to support politically favored businesses and limit competition in the marketplace.
