Actually, since Japan is next door, a nuclear explosion would be much easier. By the time other countries arrived, Japan would be nuked. Second, that definition is too general to even be used in this situation. Under that definition, basically any country with states could be an empire. Third, I asked for the imperialistic pursuits of the US. That is the important portion of determining if a country is an empire. You did not list anything.

@TL3WIS The USA started with 13 states under one(federal) government,& now has 50 of them,plus overseas territories.Empires come in different forms,religious,political & economic.The USA is just an example of a modern day successful form of one.

By your standards, any country that expands is considered an empire and if the country ever carries out an imperialistic action, then it will always be an empire.
"overseas territories"- like what? We bought Alaska and the representatives of the Republic of Hawaii agreed to annexation.

It seems like you think human institutions die with the humans that established them.
I wanted particular examples of which you were thinking.
American Samoa- Samoa was divided between the US and Germany, had we not taken it, the Germans would have.
US Virgin Islands- bought from Denmark, not taken over.
I think it is obvious that if the US had imperialistic pursuits, it would not have gone after these kinds of places.
