Insane what people thought back then. His hair in the '50's doesn't qualify for long at all. But I suppose it's different for us today, seeing how we have guys with emo hair falling all over their faces to those who keep it military short. I personally dislike overly short hair on guys... Elvis had the perfect amount in the '50's. Nowhere near hippie-length (yuck) or short. The sideburns were a nice touch, and his clothes were cool. Pity guys don't dress and style their hair like that today.
Elvis was about to be drafted into the Army whilst this film was being made, and perhaps he was getting his hair shorter and sideburns shorter to get used to the crewcut. I personally think with or without sideburns he was one hell of a good looking man, and sang a song like nobody could or can today. hope that may answer your query, on the other hand the studios had alot of power in those days!!! lol
jacqui...Ok thank you for that guess. But I must say that it sound a bit corny to get rid of them 'burns to get used to crewcut. he looked more wilder and much cooler with the sideburns and the a bit lonher hair he had in late 56-57. Just my 1 SEK of opinion.
Hi thank you for your response. I did read that Elvis was embrassed that is image would totally change once in the army and lets not forget, that to everyone else Elvis's hair was long and this put alot of people against him. by today's standard elvis looks tame, but then, he was the equivalent of controversial artists of today. He paved the way that is for sure best wishes jacqui
jacq...I do know that Elvis hair was considered long at that time. Just look at most US guys from the '50s and they had the crew cut or similar. But that he got rid of the sideburns was the 1 sign of what was gonna come. I mean here, the more polished Elvis that emerged in the '60s and became mainstream. He lost the rebel image and that was bad in my opinion. Not mention the fashion in the '60s that was real ugly. All tight and 'squared'. Legs of the pants like they were waiting for high water.
The shorter sideburns were the result of the haircut scene of "Jailhouse Rock" , in which his character, Vince Everett, gets "the Fresh Fish Special". It was filmed during the final days of filming Jailhouse Rock and edited into the film.

The only bad thing here and his movie "King Creole" was that he got rid of his side burns. Why?
