Carol, of course, was hilarious spoofing Esther Williams here (loved how the unseen chorus suffered with her when she bumped her head and burbled- LOL)- and she seems to have been quite an acrobatic swimmer herself at the time! Wonder whose pool+ house they used to film this? I hope Miss Williams liked this salute(and, no doubt herself DID suffer from head bumps, rotten floating plants, etc while filming her bits).
I grew up watching this show with my grandma and we used to laugh ourselves silly. As I got older I realized how much ground breaking Carol did on tv as a comedienne. AND as a dramatic actress, she got a Golden Globe nomination as best actress for the film "The Life of the Party", a true story. I'm posting for other fans in L.A. who might want a chance to see her in person, she's hosting and will do a Q&A after.

Many of my good friends and I have agreed over the years that the Carol Burnett show was the best show to sit down and watch w/ our families! It's so sad, to me, what's happened to television. I don't watch tv now, save for special internet tv shows, and a few documentary shows from PBS you can watch on the net. I adore Carol forever!
True. When I was 10, the biggest punishment my mom could levy on me was I couldn't stay up on Saturday night to watch Carol--and on those nights I didn't get to watch, it *was* torture--I'd sooner get a spanking than miss it. I used to sneak and watch through the keyhole in the hall door--then I'd get in *more* trouble!
Another priceless spoof! It's always bothered me how Esther Williams never suffered typical swimming woes in her films like getting water in her mouth, having a wedgie, or bumping into those damn lily pads!!
I know, I know, those movies weren't supposed to be realistic, but still!!
My favorite part? The backward dive out of the water! So outrageous and goofy!
The film reversal at the end was priceless, but if the clip had lasted for one more minute, we would've seen Carol-as-Esther back indoors undoing the towel on her hair, and reveal her hair to be perfectly dry and magically springy. That was hysterical!!
That's right! I'd forgotten that part. It was hilarious, all that dry hair cascading down around her shoulders when she removed the towel. Good memory!
Carol Burnett is one of the best female physical comedians to have graced my life. The other two are Lucille Ball and Gilda Radner. "The Carol Burnett Show," for the most part, transcends time in that what was funny 40 years ago is still funny today.
THANK YOU for sharing this! Every week, there would be one segment of the Carol Burnett Show that had me helpless with laughter - and this was that segment, the week it first aired. (Part of a spoof of That's Entertainment, as I recall.) Just brilliant.
she had a spoof of That's Entertainment? Oh i need to find this! Wait so did she just pick like certain people mentioned in it to spoof, or was it like a spoof of the whole thing?
thank you golden girl

Since I've not seen this on "Carol Burnett and Friends," would I be correct in assuming this was within the 1967-1972 period?
wmbrown6 3 years ago
No, I think this was from the mid-to-late 70s.

LOL Brilliant! Amazing that after all these years, Carol's skits are still charming and hysterical.
