This song is actually called "The Birth of the Blues", not the "start".
Her dress is pretty bizarre...I'm disquieted by the shoulder strap on the right. What's the thing sticking up in the back, on the strap? You see it in the close-up.
@hebneh - I suspect that the BBC's own censor, if not the broadcast regulator itself, had a rule prohibiting the use of the word "birth"...along with other words pertaining to reproduction. Much as, in the USA, you couldn't show a pregnancy, or even use the word "pregnant" on the air.
As for the "thing" sticking up on her dress, it appears to be some sort of odd decorative effect on the back, not visible from the front. Too bad we don't get to see the back of the dress.
I'm wondering if the person with the username grassham that posted on here is in fact Eddie Grassham, the teenage protege of Alma's. I'd love to know for certain. Cos Alma is hero, and as such, I am very interested in knowing these things. ;-)
At 47 I can't remember seeing Alma on T.V. Thank you for posting this (and hopefully many more). Watching this clip of the "girl with the giggle in her voice" certainly passes for better entertainment than today's dross that's transmitted via T.V.

Thank you so much. This lady was lost to us far too early. Thank goodness at least some of her wonderful output has been kept on film!
