zakirji learnt from Ustad Thirakhwa Khan Sahib, and both of them are a generation before Zakirji. It's not such a big deal to say that the teacher is better than the student... the student can never surpass the teacher anyway.

@james20030, yjvnz is not wrong in total. Though Zakir sahab studied the major part of his life under the guidance of his father ustad Allarakha Khan Sahab, his initiation in tabla was done by Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa Khan sahab only. Thirakwa Khan sahab did Zakir Ji's thread ceremony or what we call as naada bandhan. So it won't be wrong if anyone says that zakir is a student of thirakwa khan sahab or is a member of Farrukhabad Gaharana..... thanks.
