James has had a very clear and precise sound for as long as I've been listening to him and that's around 25 years now.He has vibrant tones and extreme melodies in his guitar playing and that's because he doesn't play to impress he plays to make beautiful music and that's why when you hear his work you know it's him,the guys going light speed don't let the music breath long enough to create an individuality.
@YannicYR yeah ive seen people use those or tied a sock around.its to deaden the strings so if he accidently hits an open string it wont ring out and ruin the performance for the recording. its not unheard of,i dont always remember this technique and im glad i saw it to remind before i go back to the studio.hope this helps.
I can spot a James Murphy solo a mile away when I hear a song. I don't think ANY heavy/death metal guitar player makes use of that angelic clarity in his tone. It is a sound you mostly hear from a John Petrucci, or Steve Vai. It is refreshing to hear it from a super heavy player. Look up Testament's "Trail of Tears" song and listen to to the solos. Perfection. There are some players like Mike Amott who have similar tone as Murphy...but not back in 1988-1989
@soultenebrae Dude has had that tone since day one on Spiritual Healing.... It aint no sorry Caparison guitar. He did that with Ibanez's and Fenders aswell... It's all Him
@OmniscientVirtuosity Hmmm! I think it pretty much feel different on spiritual or cancer and obituary, my opinion though but he did achieve this sound in disincarnated.
does anyone have any new info on james? he hasnt updated his web site in years. i know he was working on a death tribute album but that was years ago and i havent heard anything from him. is he still alive?
I remember back in the day i bought Gorguts just because James did a guest solo on it..remember Cancer...nobody would of bought that if he wasn't on it.
he was indeed using the single coil bridge pickup for sweep beginning...as the solo progressed he switch to to bridge...at the end of the solo during the alternate picking part,he goes back to bridge again. There ya go
james is in favorite my top three guitarist of all time they forget to mention he was in testament at the beginning script, listen to testament's live at the fillmore cd he performs alex skolnicks solos just as good as alex
james murphy is my guitar idol! andreas kisser, james murphy, and john petrucci are guitar GODS! he is beast! and caparison guitars are better then anything else!
i never knew of james murphy until he was in terstament but when i heard live at the fillmore from testament he became my top 3 of favorite guitarist for me
I never listened to Death or Obituary when I was younger but when I heard James Murphy playing with Testament... that did the trick. I just had to find out more about this amazing guitarist.
I recommend giving Vital Remains a listen for death-stuff, the song Dechristianize has some awesome leads. For James Murphy, the guitarist in the video, the Testament album Low aswell as the Death album Spiritual Healing is a great startingpoint. :)
ya i know eh. but i gotta say. i dont think lars ulrich is a better drummer. i think he might have better planned beats through songs but joey has alot more skill. thats also personal preferance so dont get me wrong either lars is a great drummer and i play alot of metallica on drums. and i agree with you with all these little emo kids saying fuck mainstream but still listen to mainstream music. like all these kids that say that and love my chemical romance. they should listen to real metal
Go to a mall and you will see about 10,000 little 13 year old shits wearing slipknot t-shirts... I fucking hate slipknot too, sssssooooooooooooooo overrated. Nu-Metal sucks, it's just for people that can't play real metal. Point being there are shitloads of good drummers out there him not being one of them.
I know what you mean by Slipknot being mainstream but I don't think you should classify them as nu metal because there isn't much hip-hop influence in them. I mean, if one of their songs was played in Hot Topic, no rational person would say they are nu metal.

ChopatoothCOBHC-I'm not the biggest Jordison fan in the world but I will say that he did an extremely good job on this song. And just for your information, he composed and played a lot on the riffs on it as well.
Jordison is the best what a fuckin joke Dave Lombardo from Slayer ,Trym from emperor or Frost from Satyricon would smoke his ass why do you think Slipknot needs like 3 other percusionists.
I love every bit of the song and its exactly the sound I'm looking for but I don't listen to it because the singer makes me want to just skip through the song, it makes me wish it was just instrumental.
well thats death metal for you. get used to it or go back to britney spears.
I didnt care for death metal vox at first but once you hear some good death metal bands you start to get used to it. Plus, some death metal vocalists are just bad a death metal vocals. Look up some late era death or some Arch Enemy. Pantera's Phil Anselmo is also a great metal vocalist
