@rwells47 ~ Don't forget, there's another member of the Byrds from their later "Rockabilly" days who was a significant part of that era of the group, circa; 1968 and into 1969 ~ Gram Parsons. Though it has been written that during his short tenure with the Byrds he was little more than a side man on salary, Parsons contributed a great deal to that particular genre of music that the Byrds produced during a short, but important, chapter in their musical history. Parsons died in 1973 at age 27.
@rwells47 - actually Roger McGuinn's real name is Jim. James Joseph McGuinn was born on July 13, 1942. He changed his first name to Roger after a flirtation with the Subud religion.
@rwells47 tar for that quick reply.Much apreciated,I just loved the sound the jingle jangle sound their sound it was so melodic,so so good to listen to taks me back to some really good places wish I could go back to.
Thanks for the info.My fave of theirs is one called,"He Was A Friend of Mine" haunting song. Thanks again.
"The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."(Proust). Middle-Age a time for being younger as opposed to being so much older. Love the words in this song.
Smacks you upside the head if you've lived a life of unfulfilled potential. Heavy, introspective. The song for me is a personal indictment, and compels me to seek the better angels of my nature. Thank you, Byrds. Thank you...

recuerdos de un pase incotrolable de la niñes a la adolesencia sin perder la niñes que tiempos que nos hace recordar esta cancion gracias por el recuerdo.
Great song by Bob Dylan and beautifully performed by the Byrds. Thank you. The Byrds were hard to place with their rock mixed with folk during the Mod sixties verses the Beatles upbeat songs and people screaming for more. But, for me, the Byrds just looked and sounded so cool with hair style, outfits, and most of all.....the songs and that 12 string guitar!
Oh, here is something interesting: The Golding Earrings did a live version of Eight Miles High and it was a very long version at that!
The best Byrds song ever. When I attended Michigan State University, I was a weekend DJ in Lansing, MI and the Byrds got plenty of airplay on my show. This song though was just a wonderful song to listen to and I got plenty of requests for it. Brings back so many great memories. Thanks Ron for another great post.
"Ah, but I was so much older then,I'm younger than that now." Just so love that line. Gives me such hope for us all - our bodies grow old and decay but as long we continue to love, forgive, and continue to learn we will always be Young. Great Song.
Just love everything about this song, one of the greatest Dylan covers ever. Even the bassline arpeggio at the end is sublime. Nobody could do Dylan like the Byrds. Simply magnificent.
es lamas bella melodia que he escuchado desde la secundaria hace mas de 35 años y sigue fresca como si lagrabaran el dia de ayer. Buena por esa a los integrantes de los BYRDS.
somehow , when listening to this song , everything in this mad world makes sense. such a cool song and message. thanks for the upload. peace and love to all
Some night in 1993 I was alone in Sweden in hotel's room. I was not feelling well.Suddenly the radio begins to play this song. Was like magic, I returned to life.
THIS SONG HITS A CORD THAT STAYS WITH YOU. PURE 60'S A BALLAD WITH NO EQUAL! DYLAN'S BEST WORK FOR SURE AND THE BYRDS BRING IT! FOR THOSE OF US WHO EXPERIENCED THE 60'S THIS SONG PULLS YOU BACK THERE! IN A CLASS BY ITSELF!
I listened to this song for the first time in 1970 when I was only 6. Since that year it became my favorite song and every time I listen to it, it becomes greater and greater.
Read the lyrics slowly. It's more than an anthem, possibly the most brilliant song ever written as all that was coming into Dylans head came roaring out.
My favorite song by The Byrds --- I love the Guitar solos , voices that pitch high , low ---they blend perfectly --- By mind drifts rapidly back to those days--- love this
The Byrds are my Favorite band of all time; even though I love the Beatles, the Stones, the Animals, etc, etc there is just something about the 12String, the lyrics that just takes me back to that time amd the memories; nothing does it like the Byrds and this song. Thanks for the post.
in 66 i took the line from sonny & cher song 'so don't let them say your hairs too long, i dont care..... then added the square shades of my fav roger mcquinn and that would be my image. mcguinn here took the great bob dylan message and added great music to it and created an all time classic.
Amazing song great memories and soooo true,,,, I think we' re all much younger now:) Man, Thank God we grew up then:) wish we could recpature /start amovement to unite all of us............. happy 2011
@mouse12345ify i would agree, but am confused by the message Dylan was conveying. It would be cool to get an explanation from the brilliant poet what the thought pattern was; was he questioning protest movement and his involvement? If so, who got to him to cease protesting? I love the songs' melody, and Roger McGuinn's guitar playing is stellar, but am dismayed by the anti-protest message. I'm a retired military guy wishing current artists would stand against all the wars we're engaged in.
I'm the same age and feel much the same. Certainly it's a great cover, and one of Dylan's best songs. Every time I listen to the words of this I'm blown away by Dylan's poetry.
@fredschmidt100 You put it right man ! Best Byrds song, for sure ! They completely eliminated the Dylan influence, apart the lyrics to create a new marvelous melody and insrument mixes. But it always been the case with those incredible talented birds
Growing up in the 60's and Early 70's, listening to this song very much described my childhood. Wonderful song during the time this song was made. It makes me look back into time when I was a Very Little Boy. My Childhood wasn't the greatest, I was "Hard to handle", and listening to this song makes me fell and know how much I have more than matured now since then.

Should of been a #1 song! Tremendos words & music for the day!...Awesome sound of the 12 string Ric...I think, the "Byrds Best Song"...Play ...it...Loud!
I always knew that line was wrong,I'm not a Dylan fan,buy I always loved The Byrds. The line that says "My pathway led by confusion boats" The Byrds sing "My existence led by confusion boats" Man that drove me crazy for years till I played The Byrds live version of the song, cause on the record I could never tell what Roger was saying there.
Yes, in 1967 number 30 was quite an accomplishment. There was such talent! I agree. 1967 was maybe the best Rock'n Roll year. This song is beautiful and unforgettable. Can somebody tell me what happened to Roger McGuinn, please? Thank you!
@MarinaGro - Roger is alive and well, still performing on a regular basis, often doing a story-teller format where he plays a song, then talks to the audience about it. He has also recorded several guitar instructional videos and has his own signature model Martin and Rickenbacker guitars!
I can't believe this didn't go above #30 in '67! It seemed like such an anthem from that era...It still stands out so much in my memory of those times...such a great song. @Debutantealways I had this record album when it came out and I played it a lot-this version of this song really takes me back..like 43 years...man, where does life go? Wish McGuinn would come out to west coast once in awhile-I'd go see him-first saw him in concert in '67 and saw him in '71 or so-both times with the Byrds...
