I've recently started to teach myself like others here.
I've been trying to enroll on an online course that has videos with recorded audio of words and conversations, spellings, tenses and how to speak in a honorific manner etc.
It's going to be fun!
I'm so happy I discovered your channel it looks very promising!
When reading/learning have some Japanese jdrama or Japanese radio, where they actually talk and not sing, playing on the background. This way you'll get more and more familiar with the intonations and stuff ^^
Np, have you learned hiragana and katakana yet? I might dedicate a few videos just to that, because a lot of people seem to get hung up on those for some reason.
I recommend you make your room all-Japanese. That means everything. Also make your everyday life as Japanese as possible. It's best to do so with stuff that you're interested in (it seems you and I share a taste in anime). That'll keep you motivated.
Only advice I can give you is have an open mind on how the language works! Try to imerse yourself into it as much as you can. When you know hiragana/katakana, try and get hold of some childrens books in japanese or childrens manga in japanese, they will help! Be sure to listen to japanese music and watch anime, it really does help with things like pronounciation!
I think Zeplin and I are pretty much giving the same advice. I should probably add that the reason why this is necessary is because if you just study and then go back to your English environment, nothing will stick with you. You gotta eat sleep and breathe it really.
Here's something positive for you:
YOU ARE BEE-YOO-TEE-FUL!!! Seriously!
Good luck at that school in Birmingham.
