hate to break this open for you,, but this song is a metaphor,, old skates had a hole in the bottom,, and the key,, well,, would be inserted and turned to tighten the clamps on your shoes,, get it?
Yea she's really pretty my favorite song when I was a kid at five years old I listen to my transistor radio all night for this song Conan in Jonesboro,Ar.
Man, this reminds me of the glorious days of the 60's. What a great time to be alive; best music era...ever! I should know as I was 4 yrs old back then and knew everything. Think I had a crush on her too. LOL
@poeboy2 Thank HEAVENS they don't make 'em like this any more. It was annoying to hear this OVER and OVER and OVER again in the Top 40 on WLS-AM radio back then and it's just as annoying of a song as it was back then!!!
@SingersLeader Well you either like a song or you don't. Most of the recent big hits have been annoying from my point of view, but there are gems here and there. Just one question though, if the song was annoying back then to you, then why are you on this page? Just curious.
@poeboy2 The 70's era of songs came up in a discussion amongst my other music friends, with me basically stating the overall eclectic nature of what made it into the Top 40 on huge radio stations like WLS here in the Chicago area. I mentioned "Brand New Key" as an example of the irritating vocal quality & the annoying "ear worm" aspect of this song. So I searched YouTube for this song if only to listen in one more time & remind myself of my opinion(s) which haven't changed in 40 years.
@Tom374 ATL WaterPark Tour 2 (Black Market) I took 15 minutes out of my day to go back through my history and find it, but it's no problem man :D /watch?v=hLJLI2jFcCE
Thumbs up if you don't give a damn where you heard this first and you're too busy listening to a great song by a great singer. Still don't get the lyrics, though.
Of course WE heard this from JACKASS we're in our earlier 20's you fucken DINOSAURS!! HAHA chill...it's still a good song and makes me want to shake it like a polaroid pictcha!!
@johnnieknown dude, i know... Its about the ol man rod and squish mitten, the nether bone and meat garage etc etc.. but if you had watched the video that i did you would realise that my comment is a subtle reference to "Rolling In AquaPark" which is a highly viewed video on rollerblading in a water park that uses this song
@SqueesitPlease umm excuse me? whats your problem? did you just come up on one of the first comments and decide to discriminate against whoever you feel like?
-.- *makes a comment about how he heard this on Jackass 3 and gets a bundle of jackasses thumbing me up* yah... that won't happen, because I am not going to watch a bundle of idiots at a movie, or on a movie when I see the same idiots doing their shit here. It's more like this song is so awesome I heard it before Jackass 3 came out. Hell even before Jackass: The Movie came out I heard it. And then I was reminded of it on the radio.
dedicated to my sister she use to have this on a 45? and i remember as a little girl we would play this over and over, now i am reaching 40 and i still love this song cheers
I wish there were still artist out there today that made classic's as good as this. Don't get me wrong I love pop songs by LMFAO and B.O.B. but non of the pop singers have ever made a REAL classic that will live on forever.
Thumbs up if Jackass 3 didn't bring you here... How about you Thumb up if you heard this song before any crappy movie came about and that you just wanted to hear it again.
Just listening to my copy of the single and then to this and the last word sounds more like "Chi" rather than "Key", but I can find no reference to this on the internet. Can anyone else hear that word or know if it is?
@inshreds45 Way back when, rollerskates were metal and they attached to your shoes. The "Key" tightened the skates to fit your shoes. You would not outgrow your skates because they were length adjustable, too. Remember, this was when the Baby Boomers were kids. Folks had tons of kids post WWII. Who could afford to buy fitted skates like today for all those kids? The word "Chi" is a form of energy or life in China.
@ireneobien1954 thanks for that but I knew all about skates as I had some but it had a wingnut to extend them and I know what Chi is which is why I thought it would fit the idea of the song especially from the era it was recorded, It does say Chi I'm certain.
Melanie was such a great singer, and so beautiful inside and out back then; and still is to this day. I still have her album and play it from time to time to relive the "good ole days"! God Bless you Melanie!
Wow! I hadn't heard this great song since the early 70's when it was playing on the radio. No iPods back then...LOL We did have 8-tracks though! "State of the art" tech in those days. Anyway, My parents owned & operated a skating rink at the time (I patrolled the floor, making sure everyone skated safely) and this was one of the songs that we played to skate by. ;o)
Thumbs up if Jackass 3 brought you here! I LOVE JACKASS sex babyThanks for posting this!! When this song came out I was about 17 or 18 with a very popular local band in Southern California. I instantly fell in love with her and also with a very young Linda Ronstadt who was just coming into her own after the Stone Ponys (Different Drum, Long, Long, Time etc) Great times and a definitely nice journey to that part of my life. THANKS!!
